# From Breeders' Cup Winner to Stallion: The Horses That Built Dynasties

_Why the Breeders' Cup is paid for by breeders, and how winners such as Curlin, Gun Runner and Flightline turned a win into a stud career._

## A race meeting paid for by stallions

**The Breeders' Cup is the only major race meeting built around the stud book.** Fourteen Grade 1 races at Keeneland on 30 and 31 October decide the champions of North American racing, and for the colts and fillies who win them the result is the start of a second career, as a stallion or a broodmare.

That is why the meeting matters beyond the racecourse. A Classic winner's stud fee is set partly by what he did on the day, and the farms around Lexington, Kentucky, wait for the result before they fix their prices. When Coolmore published its 2026 stallion list, the fees for the recent Classic principals Sierra Leone, Fierceness and Journalism were still "to be determined", according to Thoroughbred Daily News.

## Why it is called the Breeders' Cup

John Gaines, a Lexington breeder, took the idea public in April 1982: a season-ending championship day to decide a true champion in every division, "like the Super Bowl". Breeders' Cup Limited was formed that year. The first meeting followed at Hollywood Park on 10 November 1984, with seven Grade 1 races worth $10m in total and a $3m Classic.

The name describes who pays. The purses are funded mainly by breeders, through nomination fees paid first for stallions and then for their foals. Only nominated horses are eligible, and a stallion's nomination fee equals his advertised stud fee. A foal then has to be nominated too, at $400 for the standard fee, with late nominations costing far more. From the 2027 foal crop the fee will be tiered at $200, $400 or $600 according to the sire's fee, the Breeders' Cup has said.

The first Classic showed the system working. Wild Again was not nominated, so his owners paid a $360,000 supplementary fee to run. He won at about 31-1, with the favourite Gate Dancer demoted to third after a stewards' inquiry.

The prize money has grown with it. The 2026 meeting offers more than $34m across the 14 Grade 1 races, with $7m for the Classic, against $10m across seven races in 1984.

## The winners who became sires

### The Classic line

**Gun Runner** won the 2017 Classic and now stands at Three Chimneys for $250,000 in 2026. His son Sierra Leone won the 2024 Classic, so a Classic winner has already sired another. Gun Runner was also the leading sire at this year's Keeneland September Sale, with 57 yearlings selling for $43.7m.

**Curlin** won the 2007 Classic and stands at Hill 'n' Dale for $225,000 in 2026. His son Good Magic is now a stallion himself, at $125,000.

**Flightline** won the 2022 Classic at Keeneland by 8¼ lengths, a record for the race. He stands at Lane's End, where his fee was $200,000 in his first season, $150,000 in 2025 and is $125,000 in 2026 as his runners reach the track. His first crop are two-year-olds this year, and a colt by him sold for a record $10.5m at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company in April.

**Tiznow** won the Classic in 2000 and 2001, the only horse to win it twice. He stood at WinStar from 2002 until he was pensioned in 2020, at a peak fee of $75,000.

**American Pharoah** completed the first Grand Slam (the Triple Crown plus the Classic) at Keeneland in 2015, by 6½ lengths. His fee fell from $200,000 in 2016 to $45,000 in 2025, and TrueNicks reported he would stand in Japan for 2026. Coolmore lists nine Grade 1 winners for him, most of his best runners on turf. Winning at the top does not guarantee a dynasty.

### The runner-up who out-bred the winner

Giant's Causeway was beaten a neck by Tiznow in the 2000 Classic. He then became leading sire in North America three times, in 2009, 2010 and 2012, and sired the successful stallion Shamardal.

### The juveniles

The Friday races are where stallion careers are often made. Uncle Mo won the 2010 Juvenile and sired Nyquist, the 2015 Juvenile winner and 2016 Kentucky Derby winner. Street Sense won the 2006 Juvenile by a record 10 lengths and became the first Juvenile winner to win the Derby. Unbridled's Song, the 1995 Juvenile winner, sired Arrogate, who won the 2016 Classic.

### Europe's version

Galileo ran once on dirt, finishing sixth behind Tiznow in the 2001 Classic, then became the dominant sire of his era in Europe. Coolmore has made the Juvenile Turf a target for its colts, with Mendelssohn, the 2017 winner, retiring to Ashford Stud.

## The mares who bred on

**Miesque** won the Mile in 1987 and 1988 and was the dam of Kingmambo. **Ouija Board** won the Filly & Mare Turf in 2004 and 2006 and, mated with Galileo, produced Australia, the 2014 Derby winner. **Goldikova** won the Mile in 2008, 2009 and 2010, the only horse to win the same Breeders' Cup race three times, and her foals include the Group 3 winner Terrakova.

**Enable**, who won the 2018 Turf, has had her first foal: Encompass, a colt by Kingman, trained by John and Thady Gosden. She has since been mated with Dubawi and Siyouni. A broodmare's record takes years to read, so the best of this group is still to come.

## What a win is worth at stud

Stallion deals now price the Breeders' Cup in advance. Seize the Grey's breeding rights were bought on a $3.5m base that would rise by $4m if he won the Classic, TrueNicks reported. Bonuses of this kind, known as kickers, are in "virtually every stallion deal", according to John Sikura of Hill 'n' Dale.

The clearest number is Flightline's. After his Classic win a 2.5% share sold for $4.6m, which implies a value near $185m for the whole horse. That is an extrapolation from one share, not a sale of the horse.

Keeneland, the host track, is also where the market meets the racing. Its record September Yearling Sale this month grossed $536.7m through the ring, and the November Breeding Stock Sale runs from 3 to 10 November, three days after the Classic.

For a punter, the point is narrow. Stud value explains why owners send horses to Kentucky, and why connections run when a bad draw or a long journey argues against it. It tells you nothing about who wins on the day. Favourites lose often enough that no price here is a reason to bet.
