**The Breeders' Cup starts on Friday 30 October 2026: fourteen Grade 1 races over two days, the championship meeting of the North American season.** The 2026 running is at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky. The meeting moves to a different American track most years, so the venue is the first thing to check each autumn.

The Friday card is for two-year-olds: five races, three of them on turf. The Saturday carries the other nine, for horses aged three and older, and finishes with the Classic over 1m 2f on dirt. For British and Irish racing fans the turf races are usually where the interest lies, because that is the surface our horses race on at home. The Turf, the Mile and the Filly & Mare Turf on the Saturday, and the Juvenile Turf on the Friday, are the races to watch for European runners.

This page covers the races and how to follow them from Britain. For the countdown and the meeting at a glance, see the [Breeders' Cup festival hub](/festivals/breeders-cup/). The fields are not final yet, so this page sets out the structure and the history rather than naming likely runners.

## The 2026 schedule, day by day

The races below are listed in the order the Breeders' Cup has published for its 2026 cards. Post times are set by the organisers and can still move, so check the official card on the day rather than planning round a time printed weeks out.

### Friday: the two-year-old races

| Race | Surface | For |
|---|---|---|
| Juvenile Turf Sprint | Turf | Two-year-olds |
| Juvenile Fillies | Dirt | Two-year-old fillies |
| Juvenile Fillies Turf | Turf | Two-year-old fillies |
| Juvenile | Dirt | Two-year-old colts and geldings |
| Juvenile Turf | Turf | Two-year-old colts and geldings |

### Saturday: the championship card

| Race | Surface | For |
|---|---|---|
| Dirt Mile | Dirt | Three-year-olds and up |
| Turf Sprint | Turf | Three-year-olds and up |
| Sprint | Dirt | Three-year-olds and up |
| Filly & Mare Turf | Turf | Fillies and mares, three and up |
| Filly & Mare Sprint | Dirt | Fillies and mares, three and up |
| Mile | Turf | Three-year-olds and up |
| Distaff | Dirt | Fillies and mares, three and up |
| Turf | Turf | Three-year-olds and up |
| Classic | Dirt | Three-year-olds and up |

Every race carries the "Breeders' Cup" prefix in its full name (the Breeders' Cup Mile, the Breeders' Cup Turf and so on), and every one is a Grade 1, the American equivalent of a Group 1 here.

### Why a trip can change from year to year

Each host track has its own layout, so a few of the shorter races are run over a slightly different distance from one year to the next. Check the trip on the official card for the year you are betting on, and do not assume last year's form was over the same distance. The three headline races keep their standard trips, covered in the next section.

## The Classic, the Turf and the Mile

### The Classic

The Classic is a Grade 1 over 1m 2f on dirt for three-year-olds and older, and it is the last race of the meeting. Dirt is the main surface of American racing and one that British and Irish horses rarely race on, so most European interest lies elsewhere on the card. In 2025 it went to Forever Young, a Japanese-bred horse, which is a reminder that the field is international on both surfaces.

### The Turf

The Turf is a Grade 1 over 1m 4f on grass, for three-year-olds and older. In trip and surface it is the race on the card closest to a European middle-distance Group 1. In 2025 Ethical Diamond won it for Willie Mullins, ridden by Dylan McMonagle.

### The Mile

The Mile is a Grade 1 over 1m on turf, run at every Breeders' Cup since the first in 1984. Notable Speech won it in 2025 for Charlie Appleby, with William Buick riding.

### What travelling means for form

A horse shipped from Europe to Kentucky has had a long journey and a change of time zone, and it races on an oval laid out quite unlike most courses at home. None of that tells you who will win. It is a reason to treat European form lines with a little caution until you have seen how the travellers cope, and a reason the market can be harder to read than at a British meeting. Our [guide to value betting](/betting/strategies/value-betting/) covers how to think about a price when the form is uncertain.

## History, the host tracks and last year's winners

The Breeders' Cup was first run in 1984. The Classic, the Turf and the Mile have all been on the card since that first meeting, and the programme has grown since to the fourteen championship races it holds now.

### The host tracks

There is no permanent home. The organisers award the meeting to a different American track, sometimes for two years in a row: Del Mar in California staged it in 2024 and 2025, Keeneland has it in 2026, and Belmont Park in New York is the announced host for 2027. Keeneland staged the meeting in 2015, 2020 and 2022, so 2026 is its fourth Breeders' Cup. Because the course changes, a horse's record at one Breeders' Cup is form over a different track from the next one.

### The 2025 winners at Del Mar

| Race | Winner |
|---|---|
| Juvenile Turf Sprint | Cy Fair |
| Juvenile Fillies | Super Corredora |
| Juvenile Fillies Turf | Balantina |
| Juvenile | Ted Noffey |
| Juvenile Turf | Gstaad |
| Filly & Mare Sprint | Splendora |
| Turf Sprint | Shisospicy |
| Sprint | Bentornato |
| Distaff | Scylla |
| Turf | Ethical Diamond |
| Classic | Forever Young |
| Mile | Notable Speech |
| Dirt Mile | Nysos |
| Filly & Mare Turf | Gezora |

Among them were four winners for stables in Britain and Ireland, all of them on turf: Gstaad (Aidan O'Brien) in the Juvenile Turf, Balantina (Donnacha O'Brien) in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, Ethical Diamond (Willie Mullins) in the Turf and Notable Speech (Charlie Appleby) in the Mile. One meeting is a small sample, so read that as a description of 2025 rather than a pattern to bet on.

The 2026 winners will be added to a results page for the meeting as the races are run.

## Watching and betting from the UK

### The time difference

Kentucky is four hours behind the UK on the Breeders' Cup weekend in 2026. British clocks go back on the Sunday before the meeting and American clocks on the Sunday after, so for that one week the gap is four hours rather than the usual five. An afternoon card in Lexington is an evening card in Britain, and the Classic closes the Saturday.

### Watching on TV

UK broadcast details for 2026 had not been confirmed when this page was last updated. Check the listings for ITV, Racing TV and Sky Sports Racing in the week of the meeting, and the Breeders' Cup's own site, which lists its international broadcast partners by country.

### Betting on American racing from Britain

UK bookmakers price up the Breeders' Cup races, but a few things work differently from a British meeting.

- **Pool betting at the track.** On course in the US, betting runs through pools rather than bookmakers, so the odds on the track's board are a pool dividend that keeps moving until the off. Your bookmaker's price is its own.
- **Each-way terms.** Places and fractions are set by each bookmaker and can differ from race to race, so check them before you bet. Our [each-way betting guide](/betting/bet-types/each-way/) explains how the terms work.
- **Price concessions.** Check whether Best Odds Guaranteed or any other concession on British racing also applies to American races: the bookmaker's terms will say which races are covered.
- **Ante-post.** Prices before the final fields are known carry the risk that your horse does not run. [Ante-post betting explained](/betting/bet-types/ante-post-betting/) covers how that works.

Our AI Lab model covers British and Irish racing only, so it publishes no prices for the Breeders' Cup. For what a price really means once the bookmaker's margin is taken out, see [understanding odds](/ai-race-predictor/lab/understand-odds/). To compare firms, see [the best bookmakers for horse racing](/bookmakers/best-bookmakers-horse-racing/) and [the best free bet offers](/bookmakers/best-free-bet-offers/).

### Bet responsibly

A two-day meeting that runs late into the evening is an easy one to overdo. Set a budget before the Friday card and stick to it, and treat any free bet as part of that budget rather than extra. The odds favour the bookmaker over time, whoever the horses are.
