## The going in one screen

The going at Ascot for [British Champions Day](/festivals/british-champions-day/) on Saturday 17 October 2026 is Good. Racing Post reported the change by 11:10am on Friday, after about 3.5mm of rain fell on the course that morning. Before then the ground had been good, good to firm in places, and the declared card we read at 11:50am on Friday still carried the older wording, a reminder that the going printed on a card can lag behind the official one.

For this meeting, good ground is the exception. Of the 13 Champions Days since 2011 whose going we could source, eight were run on soft or heavy ground, three on good to soft and only two on good: the first running in 2011 and last year's in 2025. Two more years, 2014 and 2016, we could not confirm and have left out of the count. If the description holds, this will be the first time Champions Day has been run on good ground two years running.

The going can change again before the first race at 12:55pm. Check the official going on Saturday morning, and again before any bet you place later in the afternoon. The full schedule is in our [Champions Day race times](/racing-news/british-champions-day-race-times/) guide.

## How often Champions Day gets good ground

Mid-October at Ascot has mostly meant soft ground on Champions Day. This is the meeting going as published on the day (it can change during the afternoon):

| Year | Going | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2011 | Good | Asian Racing Report (official wording not found) |
| 2012 | Soft | Wikipedia, Champion Stakes |
| 2013 | Soft | Wikipedia, Champion Stakes |
| 2015 | Good to Soft | Racing Post, Champion Stakes |
| 2017 | Soft | Sporting Life |
| 2018 | Soft | Sporting Life |
| 2019 | Heavy (inner track used) | Sporting Life |
| 2020 | Soft | Sporting Life |
| 2021 | Good to Soft (Soft in places) | Sporting Life |
| 2022 | Good to Soft (Soft in places) | Sporting Life |
| 2023 | Soft | Sporting Life |
| 2024 | Soft (Heavy in places) | Sporting Life |
| 2025 | Good | Sporting Life and Racing Post |

That gives eight soft or heavy, three good to soft and two good across 13 sourced years. The count includes 2011 as Good on the word of Asian Racing Report, because we could not find the official description for that year. Reports from 2014 describe deep ground but give no official going, and 2016 is left out because the sources disagree.

Much of the Champions Day form people remember was made in the mud. Kind of Blue won the 2024 Sprint on soft, heavy in places, and Kalpana won the 2024 Fillies & Mares on that same ground before winning it again on good in 2025. Last year is the best guide to how these races play on quicker ground, and two of its results were big shocks: Powerful Glory won the Sprint at 200/1 and Cicero's Gift took the QEII at 100/1. Calandagan beat Ombudsman by two and a quarter lengths in the Champion Stakes, and Trawlerman won the Long Distance Cup at 5/6, both on Good.

## This week's going, step by step

The ground has moved once this week already. Here is the sequence as Racing Post reported it:

| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| Thursday 15 October | Going good, good to firm in places. GoingStick 8.4 on the straight course, 7.5 on the round. Between 2mm and 4mm of rain expected before racing. |
| Friday 16 October, morning | About 3.5mm of rain fell on the course. |
| Friday 16 October, by 11:10am | Official going changed to Good, with the good to firm in places removed. Ascot reported 3.6mm of rain in the previous seven days. |
| Forecast | Dry weather expected through to the end of racing, with Saturday bright and slightly cooler. |

The GoingStick is a probe pushed into the turf, and a higher reading means firmer ground. On Thursday the round course read lower than the straight, so it was the slightly softer of the two before Friday's rain. We found no report of watering this week, so we make no claim either way.

A dry forecast after light rain points to ground that is more likely to quicken a little than soften. A forecast is not a going report, though. The official description can be revised on the morning and between races, and a shower nobody forecast can change things quickly on an autumn afternoon. Ascot publishes updates through the day, and our [Ascot racecard](/racecards/ascot/) shows the card as it stands.

## Race by race: what good ground changes

The form below comes from the 2026 results we hold for Britain and Ireland, plus a handful of French results we have checked. Where we have no going for a run, we say so rather than guess. One run on a surface is a clue, not proof of a preference.

### 12:55pm Two-year-old conditions race

The opener is a Class 2 conditions race over six furlongs for two-year-olds, with 11 declared. We hold no sourced form for these juveniles, so we make no ground case here; the [Ascot racecard](/racecards/ascot/) carries the field.

### 1:30pm Long Distance Cup

A Group 1 over 1m 7f 209y for ten runners. On soft ground a staying race becomes a test of who can keep going at all; on good ground the pace can stay stronger for longer and a stayer with some finishing speed has more chance to use it.

Gregory has the cleanest good-ground record in the field. Both of his 2026 wins, in the Grand Cup at York in June and the Jockey Club Rose Bowl over two miles at Newmarket in September, came on good, good to firm in places. Highwayman won the St Leger on good, good to soft in places, and his Listed win at Leopardstown came on good to yielding, so all his winning form is on good or slightly easier. Caballo de Mar won the Doncaster Cup on good, good to soft in places, but his one run on quicker ground in our results was the Gold Cup on good to firm, where he finished last of 11. We have no going for his Prix du Cadran win on 3 October. Queenstown won his Irish St Leger trial on good, good to firm in places.

### 2:05pm Champions Sprint

Sixteen runners over 6f. Good ground makes a sprint quicker and puts more weight on early speed, which suits horses that showed their best on summer ground.

Almeraq, the 11/8 market leader at Friday lunchtime, has won on both. He took the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot on good to firm at 25/1, then won the Haydock Sprint Cup on soft, heavy in places, by four and a quarter lengths. In between he finished ninth in the July Cup on good to firm, beaten nearly nine lengths. Coppull has the sharpest contrast in the race: he won the Hungerford on good to firm and was fourth in the July Cup, beaten under a length and a half, on the same ground, then finished seventh in the soft-ground Sprint Cup, beaten almost 14 lengths. Division was third in the Commonwealth Cup on good to firm, beaten under a length. Prince of India was second in the Bengough over this course on 3 October on good to firm, beaten three-quarters of a length. Paborus was second in the Sprint Cup on soft.

### 2:40pm Fillies & Mares

Thirteen runners over 1m 3f 211y. Kalpana carries no ground question. She won the King George on good to firm, the Yorkshire Oaks on good to soft, and this race on soft, heavy in places, in 2024 and on good in 2025. Her latest run was fifth in the Arc, which Racing Post returned as Good.

Johanna Walsh won the Irish Oaks on good to firm, good in places, and her one disappointing run, sixth in the Yorkshire Oaks beaten nearly nine lengths, came on good to soft. Minnie Hauk was tenth in the Arc on Good. Sparan Nua was beaten a short head in the Yorkshire Oaks on good to soft and won the Munster Oaks on good. Coedana's two wins in our results this year, including the Princess Royal at Newmarket, both came on good, good to firm in places.

### 3:20pm Queen Elizabeth II Stakes

Eleven runners over 1m. Gstaad has done all his recent running on fast ground: second in the St James's Palace and the Sussex, both on good to firm, then third at 4/5 in the Prix du Moulin on good to firm, beaten four and a quarter lengths. He has not won since the Irish 2,000 Guineas in May. Ten Bob Tony won the Queen Anne on good to firm at 50/1 and was second in the Moulin, ahead of Gstaad. Talk of New York won the Joel Stakes on good, good to firm in places, and More Thunder won the Park Stakes on good. Zavateri is the leading runner whose best recent run came with cut: he won the Celebration Mile on soft. We have no going for Rayif's Prix Jacques le Marois win, so we make no ground case for or against him.

### 4:00pm Champion Stakes

Six runners over 1m 1f 212y. Calandagan won this race last year on Good, and his one bad run of 2026 came on good to soft at Epsom. Ombudsman won the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot on good to firm, while John Gosden blamed the ground for his fourth in the Juddmonte International. The runs behind both are set out in [Ombudsman vs Calandagan](/racing-news/ombudsman-vs-calandagan-champion-stakes-2026/).

### 4:35pm Balmoral Handicap

Twenty runners, plus three reserves, over a mile. Crown of Oaks won it last year on Good and was second in the Fortune Stakes at Sandown on good, good to soft in places, last time. Scoville won the Pertemps Network Handicap at Doncaster on good, good to soft in places. Gavriel was fourth of 27 in the Cambridgeshire on good to firm, beaten just over half a length. Hickory has won twice at Ascot this summer, on good to firm and on good, good to firm in places.

## The prices at Friday lunchtime

These are the best prices on the declared card at 11:50am on Friday 16 October, after the going change to Good. Prices move all the way to the off, so treat this as a snapshot.

| Time | Race | Runners | Each-way terms | Best-price book | Shortest best price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1:30pm | Long Distance Cup | 10 | 1/5 odds, 3 places | 105.9% | Highwayman 10/3 |
| 2:05pm | Champions Sprint | 16 | 1/5 odds, 3 places | 110.4% | Almeraq 11/8 |
| 2:40pm | Fillies & Mares | 13 | 1/5 odds, 3 places | 112.9% | Kalpana 11/8 |
| 3:20pm | QEII | 11 | 1/5 odds, 3 places | 107.7% | Gstaad 3/1 |
| 4:00pm | Champion Stakes | 6 | 1/4 odds, 2 places | 105.2% | Calandagan 2/1, Ombudsman 2/1 |
| 4:35pm | Balmoral Handicap | 20 (plus 3 reserves) | 1/4 odds, 4 places | 116.4% | Scoville 5/1, Gavriel 5/1 |

The book is the sum of the chances implied by each runner's best price across bookmakers. A fair market would come to 100%, and anything above that is how much the bookmaker keeps. Because it takes the best price on each horse from whichever firm offered it, the figure is a best-price snapshot, not any one firm's margin; each bookmaker's own book on a race will be higher. A figure close to 100%, like the Champion Stakes at 105.2%, means the best prices leave little room. The Balmoral figure covers the 20 runners only, because the three reserves run only if something in the main field comes out. It describes the market, not the likely winner. ## Before you bet

StableBet Ratings for the card publish on the morning of the meeting, so there are no model figures for these races yet. They will appear on the [Ascot racecard](/racecards/ascot/) and the [AI race predictor's today page](/ai-race-predictor/today/) on Saturday, and the [track record](/ai-race-predictor/track-record/) shows how the model has done so far. ## Frequently asked questions

### What is the going for Champions Day 2026?

The official going at Ascot is Good. Racing Post reported the change from good, good to firm in places by 11:10am on Friday 16 October, after about 3.5mm of rain fell that morning. It is the description in force as the meeting approaches, but it can still be revised before the first race at 12:55pm and between races, so check the official going on Saturday morning. Our [Ascot racecard](/racecards/ascot/) shows the card as it stands.

### Is Champions Day usually run on soft ground?

Mostly, yes. Of the 13 Champions Days from 2011 to 2025 whose going we could source, eight were run on soft or heavy ground, three on good to soft and two on good, in 2011 and 2025. We could not confirm the going for 2014, and the sources disagree on 2016, so neither year is in that count. If Saturday's going stays Good, it will be the first time the meeting has had good ground two years running.

### Will the going change before racing?

It might. Racing Post reported a dry forecast through to the end of racing, with Saturday bright and slightly cooler, which makes the ground more likely to quicken a little than soften. A forecast is not a going report, though, and the official description can change on the morning or between races. Ascot publishes any change, and the latest going is the one to use for any bet.

### Does the going change the each-way terms?

No. Each-way terms are set by the number of runners and the type of race, never by the ground. A going change can lead trainers to take horses out, though, and if non-runners take a field below one of the standard thresholds, the place terms change with it. Our [each-way guide](/betting/bet-types/each-way/) explains how the thresholds work.
