## Friday's racing: the eve of British Champions Day

Kieran Shoemark and Ed Walker spent the eve of British Champions Day winning twice at Haydock Park on heavy ground. Crazy Cubana (6/1) won the 3:27pm nursery over six furlongs by two and a quarter lengths, with the 6/4 favourite Resemblance back in third. Thirty-five minutes later Faith In Florence, an even-money favourite, won the 4:02pm fillies' maiden by seven lengths from the two other runners. On Saturday the same partnership runs Ten Bob Tony in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and Almaqam in the Champion Stakes.

Friday's 40 races were spread over five meetings. Haydock and Redcar raced on turf through the afternoon, Uttoxeter staged six jumps races and a bumper on good ground, and the all-weather cards at Newcastle and Dundalk ran on into the evening, the last race going off at Dundalk at 8:31pm. Of the 32 races in Britain, the only Class 2 contest was a handicap hurdle at Uttoxeter. Nothing on the day was Group or Listed class.

Two more riders with multiple winners on Friday have mounts at Ascot. Cieren Fallon won three races at Redcar, including one for William Haggas, who supplies all three of his Saturday rides. Colin Keane won twice at Dundalk before heading to a card on which he rides Kalpana, the runner with the highest official rating (124) in the Fillies & Mares Stakes. Billy Lee also rode a Dundalk treble, and Brian Ellison trained three winners at three different courses.

Friday says less about Saturday than it might seem. Heavy ground at Haydock and an evening on the all-weather ask different questions from Group 1 racing at Ascot. What Friday does show is who is riding winners and which stables have horses in form, and every Friday result, with full finishing orders, is on the [racing results hub](/racing-results/).

## Champions Day jockeys and trainers in form

Matching Friday's winners against the declared runners on Saturday's [Ascot racecard](/racecards/ascot/) gives the short list below. Everything here is who won on Friday and what they ride or run on Saturday; none of it is a selection.

### Kieran Shoemark and Ed Walker

Shoemark has three rides at Ascot. He partners Quickthorn for Hughie Morrison in the Long Distance Cup at 1:30pm, then Walker's pair: Ten Bob Tony in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at 3:20pm and Almaqam in the six-runner Champion Stakes at 4:00pm. Ten Bob Tony is a course-and-distance winner with an official rating of 121; Almaqam is rated 124. Walker also runs Torito in the Balmoral Handicap at 4:35pm under James Doyle, and has Arctic Thunder listed as a reserve for that race. Friday's two winners came in a nursery and a three-runner maiden, a long way below Group 1 level, but they were the stable's only two runners on Friday and both won.

### Cieren Fallon

Fallon's treble all came at Redcar on good ground, and the three wins came at very different prices. Extragalactic (2/9) won the 1:22pm novice stakes for Haggas by half a length from a 40/1 outsider. Cavan Lady (13/2), trained by S Hanlon, won the 3:04pm nursery by a narrow margin and had been top-rated on the morning's StableBet Ratings. Wodao (22/1), trained by Steph Hollinshead, won the 4:14pm sprint handicap by two and a quarter lengths. At Ascot, Fallon rides three for Haggas: Binhareer in the Sprint (first-time cheekpieces, and back out seven days after the previous run), Needle Match in the QEII and Bullet Point in the Balmoral.

### Colin Keane

Keane won the 7:30pm handicap at Dundalk on Ocean's Breath (2/1 favourite) for G M Lyons, then the 8:31pm on Hygge (13/2) for G Elliott by two and three-quarter lengths. His Saturday book is the busiest of the three: Amelia Earhart for Aidan O'Brien in the Long Distance Cup, Kalpana for Andrew Balding in the Fillies & Mares, Hawk Mountain for O'Brien in the QEII and Excellent Believe for Stephen Thorne in the Balmoral.

### Others with a Friday winner and a Saturday runner

Oisin Murphy won the opening race at Haydock, the 1:42pm maiden, on Arthurian (2/7) for Andrew Balding by half a length. He has five Ascot rides: Caballo de Mar, Marvelman, Believed, Bay City Roller and Mister Winston, the second and last of those for Balding. Rowan Scott won the 2:17pm handicap at Haydock on Viper for Brian Ellison and rides Poatan for George Scott in the Sprint. K R Burke saddled Urchin to win the 5:37pm staying handicap at Haydock by ten lengths and runs Zeus Olympios in the QEII and Soul Love in the Sprint.

## Meeting by meeting

Times below are UK time. Prices are starting prices (SP).

### Haydock Park (heavy, eight races)

Several races were won by wide margins on the heavy ground. Urchin (10/3) won the 5:37pm staying handicap over a mile and six furlongs by ten lengths, with the 6/5 favourite Yaa Min last of the five runners. Faith In Florence's seven-length win came in a three-runner race, and Irish Nectar (7/4 favourite) won the 5:09pm sprint handicap for M Herrington and Dylan Hogan by three lengths. The two divisions of the seven-furlong handicap both went to the horse top-rated on the morning's StableBet Ratings: Viper (11/2) for Brian Ellison at 2:17pm and Maximising (11/2) for K P De Foy at 2:52pm. Proof (12/1) won the 14-runner five-furlong handicap at 4:38pm for C Hills and Mark Winn, with the 10/3 favourite Eye Of Dubai tenth. Three of the eight favourites won.

### Redcar (good, eight races)

Fallon's treble was the main story, with the 4:51pm handicap close behind. Uncertainty (40/1) won that 18-runner race for S Whitaker and Barry McHugh from stall one, beating the 7/2 favourite Kiss Me My Love by the smallest margin of the day at the course. The horse top-rated that morning, Highfield Viking, finished 16th. Earlier, Unicorn Milkshake (11/2) won the second division of the novice stakes by seven lengths for Ellison and K Stott, with the 4/6 favourite My Girl Dee Mo third. Trapped Goddess (6/4 favourite) won the fillies' novice for H Palmer and David Probert, Sergeant Mayer (9/2) took the 3:39pm sprint for N Tinkler and Faye McManoman, and Sweet Kiss (10/3 favourite) won the closing amateur riders' handicap for T D Easterby and Miss Amy Collier.

### Newcastle (standard, nine races)

Favourites had a poor day on the all-weather: only Qila (13/8) won, at 5:22pm for Ellison and Harry Russell, which completed the trainer's treble across three courses. Jack Callan rode a double, on Patrol (11/2) for Dylan Cunha at 4:44pm and Nepal (18/1) for I Furtado at 6:17pm, the second from stall one. The other winners came at a range of prices: Farabove The Limit (3/1), Kaleido (15/8) in the seller for D O'Meara, Emerald Harmony (12/1), Cavallo Pazzo (13/2), Clasina (12/1), who beat the 6/5 favourite Lanarra, and Tommie's Angel (14/1) for R Menzies in the 8:16pm finale.

### Dundalk (standard, eight races)

Billy Lee rode three winners from six rides: Heart Of You (16/1) for K J Condon in the 6:00pm nursery, where the 3/1 favourite This That finished tenth, Sedro Woolley (11/2) for W McCreery at 6:30pm, and Enchanted Lady (11/2) for A Oliver at 8:00pm. Keane's double came from seven rides. The first two races went to the favourite and top-rated runner: Tyson Fury (9/4) in the apprentice race and Firewalker (15/8) in the maiden. Jazzit (11/2) won the 7:00pm handicap by the smallest margin on the card from Boston Max, the morning's top-rated runner.

### Uttoxeter (good, seven races)

Lunar Trix (11/8 favourite) won the opening novices' hurdle by 12 lengths for S Edmunds and Charlie Hammond. Slaney Opera (12/1) won the three-mile handicap chase for J S Wainwright and Jamie Hamilton, with both joint-favourites out of the places. Folie Golith (7/4) beat the 5/4 favourite Getawhisky by seven lengths in a three-runner mares' chase, Seamoon Story (4/1) won the Class 2 handicap hurdle for C E Longsdon, and Bleu D'enfer (11/4) won for D McCain Jnr. In the 4:22pm handicap hurdle, won by Bryson (11/2), the favourite Uhtred Ragnarson refused to race and the top-rated Zenato was pulled up. Passing Chance (14/1) beat the 4/9 favourite Madam Speaker, who was third, in the closing mares' bumper.

## Favourites and the StableBet Ratings: one day's numbers

The SP favourite, or one of the joint-favourites, won 11 of the 40 races. Only one race had joint-favourites (the 2:02pm chase at Uttoxeter) and neither of them won, so the count is the same however joint-favourites are treated. By meeting, favourites won three at Haydock, three at Redcar, three at Dundalk, one at Newcastle and one at Uttoxeter.

The horse top-rated on the morning's StableBet Ratings also won 11 races, out of the 39 that had ratings; the Uttoxeter bumper had none. In five races two horses shared the top rating, and one of those, Firewalker at Dundalk, won; it is counted as a win here, so the stricter figure is 10. In six races the top-rated horse and the favourite were the same and won. The rating's top pick won five races where it was not the favourite (Viper, Maximising, Kaleido, Cavan Lady and Sergeant Mayer), and the favourite won five where the rating preferred something else. Uttoxeter was the weak spot: none of the six rated jumps races went to the top-rated horse.

Treat all of this as one day's numbers. Thirty-nine races is far too few to say whether a rating is any good, and Friday's split could easily reverse on Saturday. The StableBet Rating's live test is pre-registered and read over a much larger sample, and the running record, wins and losses together, is on the [AI race predictor track record](/ai-race-predictor/track-record/). Nothing on this page suggests a way to make money from the ratings or from favourites.

## Looking ahead to Ascot

## Frequently asked questions

### Who rode the most winners on Friday 16 October 2026?

Billy Lee and Cieren Fallon rode three winners each. Lee's treble came at Dundalk from six rides: Heart Of You (16/1), Sedro Woolley (11/2) and Enchanted Lady (11/2). Fallon's came at Redcar from six rides: Extragalactic (2/9), Cavan Lady (13/2) and Wodao (22/1). Colin Keane, Kieran Shoemark and Jack Callan each rode two winners.

### What was the biggest-priced winner on Friday 16 October 2026?

Uncertainty, at 40/1, in the 4:51pm handicap at Redcar. Trained by S Whitaker and ridden by Barry McHugh, Uncertainty broke from stall one in an 18-runner field and beat the 7/2 favourite Kiss Me My Love by the narrowest margin of the afternoon at Redcar. The next-longest winners were Wodao (22/1), also at Redcar, and Nepal (18/1) at Newcastle.

### Which trainer had the most winners on Friday?

Brian Ellison trained three winners at three different courses: Viper (11/2) at Haydock, Unicorn Milkshake (11/2) at Redcar and Qila (13/8) at Newcastle. Each had a different jockey. Ed Walker had two runners, both at Haydock, and both won: Crazy Cubana and Faith In Florence, ridden by Kieran Shoemark.

### What was the going at Friday's meetings?

Haydock Park raced on heavy ground. Redcar and Uttoxeter were good. Newcastle and Dundalk race on all-weather surfaces and both were given as standard. Heavy ground at Haydock and a Group 1 at Ascot are very different tests, so a heavy-ground win on Friday is no guide to how a horse would handle quicker ground. Of Friday's 40 races, 15 were run on good ground, eight on heavy and 17 on the all-weather.

### Which Friday winners connect to British Champions Day?

Kieran Shoemark and Ed Walker, who won twice at Haydock, run Ten Bob Tony in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and Almaqam in the Champion Stakes. Cieren Fallon rides three for William Haggas, and Colin Keane rides Kalpana in the Fillies & Mares Stakes. Oisin Murphy, who won on Arthurian for Andrew Balding, has five rides on the [Ascot racecard](/racecards/ascot/).
