# Glorious Goodwood 2026 Results: Goodwood Cup, Sussex Stakes, Stewards' Cup & Every Day's Winners

## Glorious Goodwood 2026: the results, day by day

The Qatar Goodwood Festival runs from **Tuesday 28 July to Saturday 1 August 2026** on the Sussex Downs. This is the results hub: each day's key winners, with starting prices, added and verified from source as the cards finish. Nothing here is filled in ahead of time. A race appears only once it has been run and the result confirmed.

Five days, built around a run of championship features. **Tuesday** opens with the **Goodwood Cup** (Group 1, 2 miles), the summer's staying showpiece. **Wednesday** brings the **Sussex Stakes** (Group 1, 1 mile), widely held to be the definitive miler's championship of the European season. **Thursday** is Ladies' Day and the **Nassau Stakes** (Group 1, 1m 2f). **Friday** carries a deep card of Group 2 and Group 3 racing, and **Saturday** closes with the **Stewards' Cup** (Premier Handicap, 6f), the richest sprint handicap of the British calendar.

## Tuesday 28 July: Scandinavia turns the Goodwood Cup into a procession

The **Goodwood Cup** looked like a duel. Two horses dominated the market, Aidan O'Brien's **Scandinavia** at 6/5 and the Gosden stayer Trawlerman at 13/8, and only eight went to post. It stayed a duel until the field turned for home. Ryan Moore sent Scandinavia on and the race was settled inside a furlong, the winner passing the post **eight and a half lengths** clear of Trawlerman, with Rahiebb (14/1) a further length back in third.

The ground was given as good, good to firm in places, over the round two miles. Goodwood's climbs and its downhill drop into the straight ask different questions of a stayer than Ascot's long home straight, and a winning margin like that reframes the staying division for the rest of the summer. The Doncaster Cup in September is the obvious next question.

The two Group 2s either side of it were far tighter. **Lake Forest** went off at 10/11 for William Haggas and Cieren Fallon in the Lennox Stakes and had to work for it, holding the 16/1 outsider Rogue Diplomat narrowly with Witness Stand (8/1) third. In the Vintage Stakes, a six-runner heat for the juveniles, **Dr Rascal** (13/2) beat Haffner by half a length for Oliver Cole and Kaiya Fraser, and the 5/4 favourite Al Hudaiba could only finish third.

Fallon ended the afternoon with a double, adding the closing fillies' handicap on **Sing The Blues** at 7/1 for Martin Dunne in a field of twenty.

The day had opened with the **Chesterfield Cup**, a seventeen-runner handicap over a mile and a furlong, where William Buick and George Scott took it with **Al Aali** at 11/2. The biggest field of the day came in the five-furlong Shaker Handicap, twenty-three runners, won by **Twilight Calls** (6/1) under Saffie Osborne.

## Wednesday 29 July: Bow Echo justifies favouritism in the Sussex Stakes

The **Sussex Stakes** went to the market leader. **Bow Echo**, sent off at 10/11 for George Boughey and Billy Loughnane, beat Gstaad (4/1) by **half a length**, with Opera Ballo (9/2) third in a field of twelve. First run in 1841, the race is widely regarded as the definitive mile championship of the European season. Goodwood's mile is run on the loop rather than a straight course, and the sweeping bends and undulating ground ask a miler for balance as well as speed.

Where Galway spent Wednesday evening rewarding outsiders, Goodwood did the opposite all afternoon. **Six of the seven races went to the favourite**, the best day for market leaders of the festival so far and a sharp turn from Tuesday's three from eight.

The Molecomb Stakes, the week's Group 3 juvenile sprint over five furlongs, followed the same pattern: **Pershaada** (11/4 favourite) won it by two lengths for Richard Hannon and Sean Levey, with the 66/1 outsider Hell Of A Spin picking up third. James Doyle rode a double on the fillies' card, taking the Alice Keppel with Wild Blossom (5/4 favourite) and the Group 3 Oak Tree with Flora Of Bermuda (5/2 favourite).

Loughnane also ended with two, adding the 26-runner Charlton Handicap on **French Affair** at 14/1, the day's one genuine upset and its biggest field. The ground was given as good to firm, good in places, throughout.

## Thursday 30 July: Diamond Necklace makes it six from six in the Nassau

Ladies' Day belonged to **Diamond Necklace**. Sent off at 4/6 for Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore, she swept past the Group 1 winner Friendly Soul (5/2) a furlong out and drew away to win the **Qatar Nassau Stakes** by nearly three lengths, with See The Fire (7/1) a long way back in third and Botagoz (14/1) fourth. Only five went to post.

It was the first time she had faced older horses, and she remains **unbeaten in six starts**, four of them at the highest level. She had already taken the French 1000 Guineas and the French Oaks this season. On a ground description of good to firm, good in places, the Nassau turned into a comfortable afternoon for the favourite.

O'Brien and Moore had opened the day with a Group 2 as well, **Man's Best Friend** taking the Richmond Stakes at 11/2 from a field of ten. Not everything went their way: the 4/7 favourite So Lovely, also O'Brien and Moore, was beaten in the maiden fillies' race by **Avalon Queen** (4/1) under Billy Loughnane.

Joseph O'Brien took the Group 3 Gordon Stakes with **Enceladus** (6/4) under Dylan Browne McMonagle. The biggest price of the day belonged to **Sword Salute**, a 33/1 winner of the nursery for Charlie Johnston and Rowan Scott in an eighteen-runner field, and Oisin Murphy took the Buccellati Handicap on Naana's Shadow (5/1).

## Friday 31 July: American Affair lands the King George Qatar Stakes

Jim Goldie's **American Affair** was the story of Friday's card. Sent off at 12/1 for the **King George Qatar Stakes** (Group 2, 5f), the Scottish-trained sprinter was always up with the pace under Paul Mulrennan and asserted a furlong out, holding on from Rumstar (6/1) and Time For Sandals (14/1) to give his trainer a Group win at the meeting and open up a possible tilt at the Nunthorpe Stakes at York next month.

The card's other black-type feature, the Group 3 HKJC World Pool Thoroughbred Stakes, went the way of **Shayem** (8/1) for jockey C Lee and trainer K R Burke, who beat the odds-on favourite Talk Of New York (2/5, Charlie Appleby) into second. Aidan O'Brien and Dylan Browne McMonagle combined twice, taking the opening Coral Goodwood Handicap with Defiantly (11/4) and the Bentinck Conditions Stakes with Galen (3/1).

The most competitive race of the day on paper, the 18-runner **Coral Golden Mile** heritage handicap, was won by **Archivist** (16/1) for Callum Rodriguez and H Al Jehani, while William Buick and Charlie Appleby struck again in the closing World Pool Bet With The Tote Handicap on Into The Light (2/1). Good to Firm going held throughout the card.

## Saturday 1 August: Evening Saigon lands the Stewards' Cup at 16/1

The shell held. **Evening Saigon** won the **Coral Stewards' Cup** at 16/1 under James Doyle for Hamad Al Jehani, beating Stratusnine (25/1) narrowly, with Mitbaahy (14/1) third and Completely Random (7/1) fourth. Twenty-seven runners went down Goodwood's straight six on good to firm ground.

The first three home were all double-figure prices. That is what this race does, and it is why it is the hardest puzzle of the week rather than the most rewarding one.

It completed a remarkable festival for Wathnan Racing, whose seventh winner of the meeting it was, and a fourth of the week for Doyle.

### What the race actually cost

Add up the starting prices of all twenty-seven runners and the book came to about **145 per cent**. A fair book adds to 100, so roughly **31 pence in every pound staked** was margin before a single horse jumped.

That is almost exactly the figure from the Galway Hurdle two days earlier (146 per cent), and it is the honest way to read a race like this. A twenty-seven-runner sprint handicap is not a puzzle waiting to be solved. It is the race where the biggest field meets the biggest margin, which is why the winner is so often at a price nobody fancied.

Only one of Saturday's seven races went to the favourite, Crest of Fire at 10/3 in the closing handicap.
