**Wednesday 19 August 2026, York Racecourse. Juddmonte International Stakes, Group 1, Class 1, 1m 2f 56y, 3yo+. Going: Good (Good to Soft in places). Eight runners, off 15:36 BST. Winning time: 2m 8.44s.**

Item won York's richest race at 10/1. Both market leaders got beaten. **Ombudsman**, sent off 5/6 favourite to defend last year's title, could only finish fourth. **Constitution River**, second favourite at 7/4 and the horse Stablebet's own racecard model had rated best in the race, came home third.

Colin Keane rode Item for Andrew Balding. The winning margin was a head from **Almaqam** (14/1) in second, with Constitution River three and a half lengths back in third. Pride Of Arras was a late withdrawal, so eight went to post rather than the nine originally declared.

**Result:**
- **1st Item (10/1)**, A M Balding / Colin Keane
- **2nd Almaqam (14/1)**, E Walker / K Shoemark, hd
- **3rd Constitution River (7/4)**, A P O'Brien / R L Moore, 3½L
- 4th Ombudsman (5/6F), J & T Gosden / W Buick, 1L
- 5th Zaydann (28/1), F Graffard / M Barzalona, 2¼L
- 6th Hawk Mountain (20/1), A P O'Brien / Wayne Lordan, 18L
- 7th Devil's Advocate (200/1), J & T Gosden / R Havlin, sh
- 8th Action (200/1), A P O'Brien / Ronan Whelan, 9L

This was not a fluke price. Twenty-five days earlier, on 25 July, Item won the Sky Bet York Stakes, a Group 2, over this same course and this same 1m 2f 56y trip. That is course-and-distance form from three and a half weeks ago, not a horse plucked out of the field at random.

**Tote:** Win £13.60, Places £2.00 / £2.45 / £1.10. Exacta £129.60, Trifecta £351.30, Tricast £360.50, CSF £121.82.

**Prize money:** 1st £850,650, 2nd £322,500, 3rd £161,400, 4th £80,400, 5th £40,350, 6th £20,250.

No stewards' inquiry.

## How the race was run

Hawk Mountain set a strong pace and led the field before weakening quickly two furlongs out. Constitution River, ridden by Ryan Moore for Aidan O'Brien, hit the front as Hawk Mountain dropped away.

Ombudsman was held up towards the rear for William Buick and was already short of room when asked to challenge two furlongs out. He never landed a blow, ridden along with no response, and weakened inside the final furlong to finish fourth.

Almaqam travelled strongly through the race in midfield for Kieran Shoemark. He led with a furlong to run, taking over from Constitution River, and was all out by the time Item headed him close home.

Item did the finishing. Held up in touch towards the rear early, he was short of room two furlongs out, switched right for room, and made good headway with a furlong to travel. He had every chance inside the final furlong and got up to lead close home. Sporting Life's verdict on the winner: he "did well in the circumstances."

Constitution River, who had hit the front two furlongs out, was headed by Almaqam with a furlong left, lost second place inside the final furlong, and had soon nothing more to give.

No stewards' inquiry was called.

## Item's course-and-distance form

This was not a random result at a big price. Twenty-five days before the Juddmonte, on 25 July 2026, Item won the Sky Bet York Stakes, a Group 2 run over this exact course and this exact trip, at 3/1. He arrived at the Juddmonte with recent, direct evidence he handles the track and the distance.

Sporting Life's own pre-race preview picked up on the same form line: two Group 2 wins over course and distance already this year. That is a horse the market had cause to respect at 10/1, even with Ombudsman and Constitution River taking the two shortest prices.

Item's win also fits a longer pattern at this race. Stablebet's research into the Juddmonte International's history found that four of the last twelve renewals before this one went to a three-year-old carrying the weight-for-age allowance, most recently City Of Troy in 2024. Item, a three-year-old running off 9st 1lb against the older horses' 9st 8lb, extends that record rather than breaking new ground.

## Market moves

Item opened at 11/1 and was backed in slightly to 10/1 by the off. Ombudsman shortened from an opening Evens into 5/6 favourite, the strongest support of the day. Constitution River drifted a touch, from an opening 6/4 out to 7/4. Hawk Mountain was matched at 18/1 at one point before drifting back out to a 20/1 starting price, and Devil's Advocate touched 250/1 before settling at 200/1.

## The honest read: the model's pick finished third

Stablebet's own racecard model rated Constitution River the best horse in the race, at any price, in our pre-race preview. He finished third. That is the plain version: a model tag of "top-rated" is not a guarantee, and this is exactly the kind of result our AI Lab and model coverage is built to report in public, wins and misses both.

The market leaders did not fare any better. Ombudsman went off the shortest price in the field, backed into 5/6 favourite as the defending champion with the highest official rating in the race (132). He weakened inside the final furlong and beat only the two rank outsiders home. Constitution River, second favourite, led for a spell and was still travelling well with two furlongs to run before he was picked off twice in the closing stages. Both market leaders were beaten by a horse rated only third of the nine on official figures behind them (OR122, level with Almaqam), but one with recent course-and-distance form neither older rival could match on the day.

## The four in the frame

**Almaqam (2nd, 14/1)** ran the race of his season. He travelled strongly for Ed Walker and Kieran Shoemark, hit the front with a furlong to run, and was only picked off close home. A head is as close as it gets, and it is a big-race career-best from a horse who went off a double-figure price in a Group 1.

**Ombudsman (4th, 5/6F)** did not run to his best. Held up towards the rear and short of room when William Buick asked him to get involved two furlongs out, he never got competitive and weakened into fourth. It happens to the highest-rated horse in the field as much as any other. A below-form run from the favourite is a normal part of racing.

**Constitution River (3rd, 7/4)** ran with credit without lasting home. He pressed the pace, led outright with two furlongs to run, and was still there to be beaten a furlong out before Almaqam and then Item went past him. Third, beaten three and a half lengths as a three-year-old taking on the older generation, is a form line Aidan O'Brien's yard can work with. It is just not the one the model's rating pointed to.

**Hawk Mountain (6th, 20/1)** did the donkey work and paid for it. He set a strong pace from the front, led early, and weakened quickly two furlongs out to finish beaten 18 lengths. Setting the pace in a Group 1 field this deep rarely ends any other way.
