# St Simon and Horris Hill Stakes 2026: The Newbury Races Rerun at Newmarket

_Newbury's two lost Group 3s run at Newmarket on 30 and 31 October 2026: the entries, who came back from Newbury, the ground, the form and betting notes._

Storm Austen washed out both days of Newbury's last Flat meeting of the year, and with them two Group 3 races. Both now run on Newmarket's Rowley Mile instead: the St Simon Stakes on Friday 30 October and the Horris Hill Stakes on Saturday 31 October. The Horris Hill is open to fillies this time, to make up for a fillies' race Newbury could not save.

This preview covers why the races moved, what changes at Newmarket, who has been entered, which of the horses declared at Newbury have come back, and how the main contenders' form reads. It uses our own racecard feed and results files for Newbury's declared fields, the going and the trainers' records at Newmarket this autumn.

**Where things stand on Tuesday 27 October: entries only.** Nothing is declared yet. Flat races are declared two days ahead, so Friday's field should be known on Wednesday and Saturday's on Thursday, and we will update this page then. The final fields go up on our [Newmarket racecards](/racecards/newmarket/). Tap the star beside any horse or trainer named here to follow them in your [Horse Tracker](/horse-tracker/).

## Why the races moved

Newbury had taken more than 50mm of rain in about four days, clerk of the course George Hill said, and parts of the track were waterlogged. Friday 23 October's card was called off first. Another 13mm fell overnight, the forecast for Saturday got worse, and Saturday's eight-race card went as well.

Saturday held three of the meeting's best races: the St Simon Stakes over a mile and a half, the Horris Hill Stakes over seven furlongs, and the Listed Radley Stakes for two-year-old fillies over the same seven furlongs.

On Friday 23 October the BHA announced the rescue:

- **St Simon Stakes:** Newmarket, Friday 30 October, a £75,000 race.
- **Horris Hill Stakes:** Newmarket, Saturday 31 October, a £50,000 race, and no longer restricted to colts and geldings.

The Radley Stakes could not be found a new home, so the BHA opened the Horris Hill to fillies instead. The Jockey Club agreed to add both races to its Rowley Mile cards, and the Horserace Betting Levy Board put money into both.

It has happened before. In 2023 the St Simon was also moved from Newbury to Newmarket, and Hamish, trained by William Haggas, won it, with Al Qareem second. Al Qareem is entered again this week. Our [storm weekend review](/racing-news/storms-austen-and-boelo-racing-2026-review/) covers everything else the weather took that weekend.

## What changes at Newmarket

**The trips stay the same.** The St Simon is still a mile and a half and the Horris Hill still seven furlongs, now on the Rowley Mile. The Rowley Mile's straight runs for ten furlongs, so the Horris Hill is a straight seven, with the Dip about a furlong out and a climb to the line. Both races finish up that same straight.

**The times.** The St Simon is the fifth race on Friday, at 2.20pm. The Horris Hill is the fourth on Saturday, at 1.40pm.

**The ground should be better than Newbury's.** Saturday's Newbury card had the going as Soft, Heavy in places, with a GoingStick reading of 3.9, before the meeting was lost. Newmarket last raced on Thursday 22 October, the day before the storm, and our racecard feed had it as Soft (GoingStick 6.4), after Good to Soft (6.5) the day before.

On Tuesday 27 October the Racing Post card gives the going for both days as Good to Soft, and the At The Races card as Good to Soft, Soft in places. That is the going at the entry stage. It can change before declarations and again before racing, so check the [Newmarket racecard](/racecards/newmarket/) on the day.

**Who has come back.** All 18 horses declared for the two races at Newbury have been entered again. They are joined by 11 new names, one in the St Simon and ten in the Horris Hill, so the fields at the entry stage are 10 and 19.

## Friday: the St Simon Stakes

The St Simon is a Group 3 for three-year-olds and up over a mile and a half, at 2.20pm on Friday. Ten horses were entered, for a maximum field of 25. Nine of them are the nine declared at Newbury. The new name is Old Harrovian for Andrew Balding, whose only run in our results files since June was sixth of 11 in a handicap at Newbury in September.

### The entries

| Royal Playwright | Andrew Balding | 4 | 106 | Yes |
| Evanesco | Charlie Johnston | 3 | 106 | Yes |
| Rebel Rocker | Faye Bramley | 3 | 103 | Yes |
| Old Harrovian | Andrew Balding | 7 | 97 | No |

Entries as at Tuesday 27 October, from the Racing Post card, checked against the At The Races card. Ratings are the official ratings on the card. Newbury's declared field is from our racecard feed.

### The form

**The Ascot form.** Al Aasy won the Group 3 Cumberland Lodge Stakes at Ascot on 3 October, at 7/1. Two of this week's rivals were behind him: Royal Playwright was second and By The Book fourth. Al Aasy is nine now, but he has won a Listed race at Beverley and the Cumberland Lodge since the start of July, and he was third in the Group 3 Glorious Stakes at Goodwood in between. William Haggas trains him.

**The highest-rated.** White Birch, for Jamie Osborne, is rated 118, five pounds clear of the next best on the card. His one run in our results files since June was third in the Listed August Stakes at Windsor, on soft ground.

**Charlie Appleby's pair.** Charlie Appleby has two entries. Aegean Prince won the Old Borough Cup, a big handicap at Haydock on 5 September, on Soft, Heavy in places, as the 7/4 favourite. By The Book has finished second in two Listed races this year and was fourth at Ascot.

**The 2023 runner-up.** Al Qareem, for Karl Burke, was second when this race was last run at Newmarket, in 2023. His only run in our results files since June was fourth in a Listed race at York in June.

**The rest.** Grey Cuban, trained by Hugo Palmer, won an 18-runner handicap at York on 10 October at 28/1. The three-year-old Evanesco, trained by Charlie Johnston, was second in a mile-and-a-half handicap on this course on 3 October. Rebel Rocker, for Faye Bramley, ran in the Derby and the St Leger this year, finishing sixth and eighth.

That form is a guide to the entries, not a forecast. Some of these may not be declared on Wednesday.

## Saturday: the Horris Hill Stakes

The Horris Hill is a Group 3 for two-year-olds over seven furlongs, at 1.40pm on Saturday. Nineteen were entered, for a maximum of 25. Colts and geldings carry 9st 3lb and fillies 9st, with penalties for horses who have already won a Group race.

All nine declared at Newbury are back, and ten more have joined them. They include two fillies, entered under this year's new conditions, and three colts from Ireland.

### The newcomers

**Aidan O'Brien's three.** Aidan O'Brien has entered three colts. Bengal Tiger was meant to run in the Horris Hill at Newbury. When it was lost, O'Brien sent him to the Listed Prospect Stakes at Doncaster on the same Saturday instead, where he won by three and a half lengths at 10/11 on heavy ground. O'Brien said afterwards they had chosen the Horris Hill because they thought he would love seven furlongs. City Of Gold won a nursery at Leopardstown on 17 October and Accumulation won a maiden on the same card on his first start.

**The fillies.** Lex Victoria, for Simon and Ed Crisford, is rated 102, the second highest in the race. She was fourth in the Group 1 Fillies' Mile on this course on 9 October at 25/1, after winning at Newmarket in August and at Kempton in September. Trapped Goddess, for Hugo Palmer, won a novice race at Redcar on 16 October.

None of the three Radley fillies we named in our storm review, Diplomata, Spirited Gesture and Sizzling Affair, has been entered.

**The others.** A Bear Affair (Richard Hannon) won a conditions race at Salisbury on 1 October. Kicking Bear (Ed Walker) won a maiden on this course on 3 October. San Jose (Brian Meehan) and Marhaba Athmani (James Tate) are maiden winners, and Theheatison (Nick Scholfield) was third in the British EBF 100,000 Final for two-year-old colts and geldings at York on 9 October.

### The Newbury horses

Jassas is the top-rated horse in the race on 106. He won novice races at Doncaster and Haydock for Charlie Appleby before finishing fifth of five in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes here on 10 October, at 25/1.

Nakila Sun, for Andrew Balding, won that York race on 9 October at 5/1, with Theheatison third. Mezzo Forte, for William Haggas, was third in the Tattersalls Stakes on this course in September. Midgham Man, for Rod Millman, won a nursery here on 10 October. Green Sovereign (Harry Eustace) was fourth in the Group 3 Solario Stakes at Sandown. Flying Pirate (Eve Johnson Houghton), Ghost Raider (Ralph Beckett), Golden Souk (Karl Burke) and Twelve Bars (Hugo Palmer) complete the entries.

## The trainers at Newmarket this autumn

Our results files hold nine Newmarket race days this autumn, from 19 September to 22 October: 66 races and 624 runners, about nine and a half a race. Here is how the trainers in these two races have done on those days. These are records, not a guide to who will win, and most of the samples are small.

| Trainer | Runners | Winners | 2nd or 3rd |
|---|---|---|---|
| Andrew Balding | 41 | 7 | 14 |
| Charlie Appleby | 24 | 6 | 10 |
| William Haggas | 24 | 4 | 5 |
| Ralph Beckett | 19 | 2 | 6 |
| Ed Walker | 16 | 3 | 2 |
| Karl Burke | 14 | 2 | 4 |
| Aidan O'Brien | 14 | 4 | 3 |
| Charlie Johnston | 13 | 0 | 4 |
| Richard Hannon | 11 | 0 | 1 |
| Hugo Palmer | 11 | 1 | 3 |

Newmarket staged 14 Group races on those nine days. Aidan O'Brien won four of them, the Royal Lodge, Cheveley Park, Zetland and Dewhurst, from his 14 runners at the course. Andrew Balding won three, including the Sun Chariot, and Charlie Appleby two, including the Fillies' Mile.

The favourite won 22 of the 66 races, a third of them.

From the card for Newbury's abandoned Saturday, the trainers' last 14 days: Charlie Appleby had 5 winners from 21 runners, William Haggas 8 from 53, Andrew Balding 8 from 58 and Karl Burke 6 from 39. Jamie Osborne had no winner from 12 and Harry Eustace none from 18. Those figures were as at 24 October and will have moved by Friday.

Results come from our own files, which start on 1 June; non-runners are left out and joint favourites share a win. The 14-day figures are from our copy of the racecard feed.

## The rest of the two cards

Both days have eight races. On Friday, the Listed Bosra Sham Fillies' Stakes for two-year-olds over six furlongs comes just before the St Simon, at 1.45pm, with 21 entries.

Saturday has two more Listed races after the Horris Hill: the Montrose Fillies' Stakes for two-year-olds over a mile at 2.10pm, with 20 entries, and the James Seymour Stakes for three-year-olds and up over a mile and a quarter at 2.44pm, with 17. The rest of each card is handicaps and novice races. Every race is on our [Newmarket racecards](/racecards/newmarket/) once declared.

## Other races from the storm weekend

The two Newbury Group 3s are the only races from the storm weekend we can confirm are being restaged in Britain. This is what we found on Tuesday 27 October.

- **The Old Roan Chase (Aintree):** no new date. Aintree's Sunday card was abandoned because of high winds from Storm Boelo, and clerk of the course Sulekha Varma told the Racing Post they would look to have conversations about rescheduling. Neither Aintree nor the BHA has announced a date or venue, and the BHA's latest press release is the one moving the two Newbury races.
- **Newbury's other races:** nothing else has been moved. The Radley Stakes is lost for this year, and Friday's six-race card has not been restaged.
- **Galway (Ireland):** Galway called off Saturday's racing in advance and moved the card instead. The jumps races were run on Monday 26 October and the Flat card was moved back a day to Tuesday 27 October. Our results files show Galway racing on both Sunday and Monday.

If the Old Roan gets a new date, we will add it here and to our [storm weekend review](/racing-news/storms-austen-and-boelo-racing-2026-review/).

## Betting notes

**These are entries, not runners.** A bet struck before declarations is an ante-post bet, and if your horse is not declared you will usually lose the stake. Several of these horses ran recently, and connections may decide against another run so soon. Our guide to [ante-post betting](/betting/bet-types/ante-post-betting/) explains how those bets are settled.

**Bets from the Newbury race.** If you backed a horse for either race at Newbury, the bet was on a race that was abandoned. Whether your bookmaker voided it or carried it over to Newmarket is set by its own rules, so check with them rather than assume.

**The ground.** The going has gone from Soft at Newmarket's last meeting to Good to Soft on Tuesday's cards. Aegean Prince won on Soft, Heavy in places at Haydock and Bengal Tiger on heavy ground at Doncaster, while Al Aasy's Ascot win came on Good to Firm. Wait for the going on the day before reading too much into any of that.

**Each way.** The St Simon has ten entries. If it cuts up to seven or fewer runners at declarations, bookmakers usually pay only two places each way, so check the terms once the field is known. Our [each-way guide](/betting/bet-types/each-way/) explains the place terms.

The AI Lab publishes its ratings for British cards on the [today page](/ai-race-predictor/today/) on the day of racing, as a test of the model, not a tip.

## Frequently asked questions

### When are the St Simon and Horris Hill Stakes being run now?

The St Simon Stakes is at Newmarket on Friday 30 October at 2.20pm, and the Horris Hill Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday 31 October at 1.40pm. Both were due at Newbury on Saturday 24 October, a card lost to waterlogging after Storm Austen.

### Why Newmarket and not back at Newbury?

Newbury's Flat season was over, and its next meeting is a jumps fixture on Thursday 5 November. The BHA moved both races to the Rowley Mile the following week, and The Jockey Club added them to cards it was already running there.

### Can fillies run in the Horris Hill now?

Yes, for this running. The race was for colts and geldings, but the BHA opened it to fillies because the Radley Stakes, a fillies' race over the same trip, could not be rescheduled. Two fillies have been entered, Lex Victoria and Trapped Goddess. Fillies carry three pounds less than the colts.

### Are the same horses running as at Newbury?

All 18 declared for the two races at Newbury have been entered again, but these are entries, not declarations. The St Simon has one new name, Old Harrovian, and the Horris Hill has ten, including three from Aidan O'Brien. We will update this page when the fields are declared, on Wednesday for Friday's race and Thursday for Saturday's.

### What will the ground be like?

At the entry stage the cards had it as Good to Soft, or Good to Soft, Soft in places. That is firmer than the Soft, Heavy in places that Newbury had before its meeting was lost. Check the going on our Newmarket racecards on the day, as it can change.

### What happens to a bet I placed on the Newbury race?

That depends on your bookmaker. A bet on an abandoned race is normally void with the stake returned, but some bookmakers may carry an ante-post bet over to the rearranged race. Check your bookmaker's racing rules or ask its customer service.

### Is the Old Roan Chase being rerun as well?

Not so far. When we checked on Tuesday 27 October, neither Aintree nor the BHA had announced a new date or venue for it.
