Placing your first bet on a horse race is straightforward once you know the steps. This guide walks you through the process, whether you’re betting online or at the course.

Choose a licensed bookmaker

Only bet with bookmakers licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. Check the licence status on the bookmaker’s website or the Commission’s register. You must be 18 or over to bet.

Create an account and deposit

Online bookmakers will ask you to register and verify your identity. Deposit funds using a debit card or another accepted method. Set a budget before you deposit and stick to it.

Find a race and a selection

Navigate to horse racing and choose a meeting (e.g. Cheltenham, Newmarket). Pick a race and review the runners — form, odds, and comments. When you’re ready, click the odds next to your selection to add it to the bet slip.

Enter your stake and confirm

Enter the amount you want to stake. The bet slip will show your potential return. Double-check the selection, odds, and stake, then confirm the bet. If your horse wins, winnings are usually credited automatically. For more on how betting works and understanding odds, see our beginners guides.
