See the Royal Ascot Week live hubRoyal Ascot Ladies' Day 2026 is Thursday 18 June โ the third day of the five-day Royal Ascot festival and the most photographed day in British flat racing.
It is two events at once. On the track, the Gold Cup (G1, 4:20pm) is the staying championship of the British flat season โ 2 miles 4 furlongs of pure stamina at the highest level. Off the track, the parade ring becomes the most-attended fashion event of the British social calendar, with millinery + occasion-wear photographed across every UK national newspaper the following morning.
The 2026 edition runs against the post-Kyprios staying landscape: Trawlerman (J & T Gosden) defends the Gold Cup, with Sweet William (also Gosden, 2026 Sagaro winner) and Scandinavia (A O'Brien, 2025 St Leger winner) the chief threats.
This piece covers:
- The full Gold Cup card โ race times, the Gold Cup's contenders, the supporting Group 2s
- The Ladies' Day tradition โ what it is, where it came from, why Thursday is "Ladies' Day"
- What to wear โ the dress code in each enclosure, hat tradition, fashion expectations
- Practical information โ getting there, what to bring, photo etiquette, traditional Ladies' Day moments

Gold Cup (G1, 4:20pm) โ the staying championship
The 2 miles 4 furlongs of the Gold Cup is the British flat season's stamina championship โ the only race over 2m+ at Group 1 level in the British calendar all year. Recent winners read as a roll-call of staying greats: Stradivarius (a four-time winner 2018-20-21-23 โ record), Kyprios (2022, 24, 25 retired), and Trawlerman (J & T Gosden, 2025 winner).
The 2026 storyline:
- Trawlerman (Gosden / Robert Havlin) defends. The 7yo gelding won by 1L from Illinois in 2025 and is targeted at this race directly via a Royal Ascot prep route per Gosden's stable communications.
- Sweet William (Gosden / Havlin), the 2026 Sagaro winner at Ascot on 1 May, is the second Gosden runner โ the Sagaro form line was strong.
- Scandinavia (A O'Brien / R Moore), the 2025 St Leger winner and 2025 Goodwood Cup winner, is on the Vintage Crop โ Yorkshire Cup โ Gold Cup route per the Coolmore stable tour.
- Illinois (A O'Brien) is the 2025 Ormonde winner, redirected to the staying division per Aidan O'Brien's 2026 stable tour.
Trends: the Gold Cup is 8/8 the last 8 winners aged 5 or older โ staying form takes time to mature. The dual-Group-1 staying form (Sagaro + Goodwood Cup, or Sagaro + Yorkshire Cup) is the cleanest qualifying route.
For the dedicated Gold Cup race preview see our Gold Cup 2026 Preview.
Norfolk Stakes (G2, 2:30pm) โ juvenile sprint championship
The marquee 2yo race at Royal Ascot 2026 outside the Coventry. 5 furlongs, fastest-developing 2yos, the form line points to Doncaster's Champagne Stakes and the Vincent O'Brien National Stakes at the Curragh later in the season.
Ribblesdale Stakes (G2, 3:40pm) โ Oaks-form-tester
1m4f Group 2 for 3yo fillies โ the natural Royal Ascot test of fillies who didn't fire at Epsom. After the 2026 Cheshire Oaks (Wed 6 May, see our Cheshire Oaks preview) and the Musidora at York, the Ribblesdale is the third-line filly's championship at the trip.
King George V Stakes (Handicap, 3:05pm) โ 3yo Derby-also-rans
The traditional value-pick race of the Thursday card โ 3yo handicap over 1m4f, a Royal Ascot landing-spot for Derby-trial graduates and Lingfield Derby Trial second-strings.
Britannia Stakes (Heritage Handicap, 5:00pm) โ biggest 3yo handicap of the meeting
The 3yo colts' Royal Hunt Cup equivalent โ full straight mile, large field, Heritage Handicap status, and the biggest single-race winner's purse at the meeting outside the Group 1s. Always one of the most-bet races of the entire week.
Hampton Court Stakes (G3, 5:35pm)
Group 3 for 3yo middle-distance horses โ usually a Coolmore second-string vehicle and a fair Eclipse-pointer.
Buckingham Palace Stakes (Handicap, 6:10pm)
The closing race of the Thursday card โ 7f handicap, often a value-pick to close the day.
What is Ladies' Day?
"Ladies' Day" is the third day of Royal Ascot โ Thursday โ and has been informally known by that title since the late 19th century. It became the unofficial fashion centrepiece of the British social calendar through the 20th century, with the daily newspapers running picture-spreads of the most-photographed millinery on Friday morning.
The name does not mean men aren't welcome. Royal Ascot's other four days are equally open to women; Thursday simply earned the "Ladies'" tag because the social tradition crystallised around the Gold Cup card โ the most photographed of the five.
Where the tradition came from
The earliest reference to "Ladies' Day" at Ascot is from 1823, when an article in the Times described the Gold Cup card as the day "when the ladies attended in their finest". By the late Victorian era the day had become formalised as the dress-event peak of the festival.
In the 20th century, the Royal Procession (a daily Royal Ascot fixture) became more elaborate on Thursday, and the Royal Family historically had the strongest attendance on the Gold Cup day. In modern times all five days see the Royal Procession, but Thursday retains the "Ladies' Day" mantle by social convention.
What makes Thursday different from the other four days?
Editorially, three things:
- The Gold Cup itself. The 2m4f Group 1 staying championship has no equivalent at any other UK festival, and the long, drawn-out finish gives the Thursday card its unique atmospheric peak.
- The hat tradition. Ladies' Day attracts the most adventurous millinery of the meeting โ wider brims, more dramatic fascinators, more colourful palettes. The on-course photographers concentrate on Thursday's parade-ring crowd in numbers no other day matches.
- The Friday newspaper coverage. Britain's national papers run photo-spreads of Royal Ascot fashion on Friday mornings โ and Thursday is the day that most fills them. The atmosphere on Thursday morning before racing is consciously aware of this.
Famous Ladies' Day moments
- 2009: Camilla Shand's hat โ the then-Duchess of Cornwall wore a coral-pink statement hat that became the fashion image of the meeting.
- 2018: Frankie Dettori's flying-dismount Gold Cup โ Stradivarius' first Gold Cup win was the Gold Cup celebration that brought back the Dettori dismount fashion-image.
- 2022: Kyprios' first Gold Cup โ Aidan O'Brien's 5yo demolished a strong field; the Coolmore staying era at Royal Ascot's centrepiece had begun.
- 2024: Royal Ascot under King Charles III โ the Royal Procession and the Royal Box continued the unbroken Royal-Family tradition of attendance on Ladies' Day.
Atmosphere โ what it actually feels like
The Thursday morning arrival window (10:30am-12:30pm) is when the best photo opportunities occur on the lawns outside the enclosures and around the parade ring. Thousands of guests in occasion-wear, heat permitting, with the Bands of the Household Division playing in the bandstand from approximately 1:00pm.
By the second race (3:05pm) the racing focus takes over, the crowds thicken around the parade ring before the Gold Cup, and the social-event-vs-sporting-event balance tips back toward racing.
After the Gold Cup (4:20pm-finish) the atmosphere settles into the second half of the card with families, schools-out crowds and the familiar racing-festival rhythm.
By the closing race (6:10pm), Thursday has produced more Royal Ascot photographs than any other day of the year โ and the Friday morning newspaper editors are already building their picture spreads.
What to wear at Royal Ascot Ladies' Day 2026
Ladies' Day does not relax the dress code โ it follows the standard Royal Ascot enclosure-by-enclosure rules โ but the fashion expectations are higher than the other four days. The crowd dresses up more, the photographers are more attentive, and the social pressure to make an effort is real.
For the complete, definitive dress code across all four enclosures see our Royal Ascot 2026 Dress Code. Below is a Ladies'-Day-specific take.
Royal Enclosure โ Ladies' Day
The same Royal Enclosure rules apply on Thursday as on the other four days:
- Hat with 4-inch (10cm) base diameter โ strict gate enforcement
- Knees covered, straps 1 inch wide minimum
- No strapless / off-shoulder / cold-shoulder cuts
- Jumpsuits and trouser-suits permitted (full-length) โ formally codified for 2026
The Ladies'-Day fashion conversation in the Royal Enclosure is conventionally about statement millinery. The wider brims, the most dramatic feathers, and the most architectural fascinators all appear on Thursday more than any other day. Pastels, dusty-rose, sage, butterscotch and the soft-spectrum colours dominate the photographs each year; bold reds and emerald-greens make for the most-photographed individual outfits.
Queen Anne Enclosure โ Ladies' Day
Queen Anne (the second-tier enclosure with the same view of the racing) welcomes hats and fascinators of all sizes โ the 4-inch rule does not apply. Strapless and off-shoulder cuts are permitted here, unlike Royal Enclosure.
For Ladies' Day, the Queen Anne crowd typically dresses up to Royal-Enclosure standard voluntarily โ the social occasion drives the effort even though the formal rules don't require it. Expect statement millinery, occasion-wear of formal day-wear quality, and very high engagement with the photographers.
Village Enclosure โ Ladies' Day
The Village is the most fashion-forward of the four enclosures with bolder colour palettes, statement jewellery, larger sun hats, and more contemporary occasion-wear. The Village photographers are typically looking for the most adventurous looks of the day.
Windsor Enclosure โ Ladies' Day
Smart day attire is the floor; hats are optional but encouraged. The Windsor crowd is family-friendly and the dress effort is more relaxed โ but even here, Ladies' Day sees more hats than the other four days combined.
Practical tips for Ladies' Day specifically
- Walk the lawns in your shoes the day before. New shoes + the long Thursday day + the parade-ring walk = blisters by 4pm.
- Hat security in wind. Ladies' Day is famously windy in Berkshire if a thundery day is forecast. Hat-securing combs, hidden hairpins, or a chin-cord are worth carrying.
- Photo zones. Most enclosures have specific lawn areas designated for photographs โ the parade ring is the most-photographed location but stewards manage the flow. Ask before snapping in restricted areas.
- Wear a backup pair of flats in your bag. Ballet flats, espadrilles or dress sandals โ the Royal Ascot day from 11am to 6pm in heels is brutal.
- The 4-inch hat-base measurement for the Royal Enclosure is enforced with a physical template. Carry a backup hat in your car if there's any doubt.
- Most-asked colour question: black is permitted in all enclosures โ it photographs well and remains a conservative classic on the Ladies' Day lawns.
What's banned (Ladies' Day, all enclosures)
- Jeans of any kind
- Shorts
- Sportswear / branded football tops
- Beachwear / playsuits / vest tops
- Trainers / running shoes (Windsor at steward discretion)
- Bare midriff
- Hen / stag party themed outfits (which are not appropriate on Ladies' Day)
For the full complete enforcement guide see our Royal Ascot 2026 Dress Code.
Ladies' Day 2026 โ practical information
Getting there
By train. The most-used route is South Western Railway from London Waterloo to Ascot station โ direct service, approximately 50 minutes. Special "Royal Ascot" trains run with extra services through the meeting. Ascot station is a 7-minute walk to the racecourse via a clearly-signed route through Ascot High Street.
By car. Ascot Racecourse is at postcode SL5 7JX. The course has on-site car parks (advance-purchase required for some), with overflow parking at nearby Ascot Heath. Allow 90 minutes for the M3 / M25 approach in afternoon traffic โ the Royal Ascot week traffic is intense.
Special Ladies' Day services. Some London hotels run dedicated Royal Ascot coaches on Thursday โ book through the hotel concierge or the Ascot Authority's preferred-travel partner.

What to bring
- Hat-securing accessories โ combs, hidden hairpins, or a chin-cord if windy weather is forecast
- Backup flats in your bag โ your feet will thank you by 4pm
- A small umbrella โ June can be unpredictable; the indoor enclosures keep you dry but the parade-ring walk is exposed
- A pashmina / wrap โ June afternoons in Berkshire can drop suddenly cold by 6pm
- Sun cream โ even on a cool British June day, the sun on the lawns from 11:00am-3:00pm can burn
Photography etiquette
- The parade-ring lawn is the most-photographed location and stewards manage the flow
- The Royal Box and Royal Procession route are restricted to authorised photographers only
- Most national newspaper photographers work from designated positions and are not interested in non-staged photographs of guests
- For your own photographs, the lawns outside enclosures between 10:30am and 12:30pm are the best self-photo opportunities before the formal racing crowd builds
Children and Ladies' Day
The Royal Enclosure permits children under 10 at steward discretion (and they're exempt from the dress code). The Queen Anne and Village enclosures are more child-friendly. The Windsor Enclosure is the family option โ children attend free with a paying adult and the dress code is smart casual.
