Looking for the current Royal Ascot Week?
Our live guide has 2026+ racetimes, TV coverage and runners as they're confirmed.
See the Royal Ascot Week live hubRoyal Ascot 2026 runs from Tuesday 16 June to Saturday 20 June. The dress code is one of the most recognised in world sport โ formal, traditional, and strictly enforced in the Royal Enclosure with progressively-relaxed rules across the other three enclosures.
The four enclosures and their dress codes at a glance:
| Enclosure | Men's dress | Women's dress | Hat required (women)? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Royal Enclosure | Morning dress (black/grey morning suit, waistcoat, top hat, tie) | Formal day dress, knees covered, hat with 4-inch base, no strapless / off-shoulder / cold-shoulder | Yes โ mandatory |
| Queen Anne Enclosure | Suit + tie (jacket and full-length trousers, optional waistcoat) | Day dress / smart trouser-suit, hat or fascinator strongly recommended | Strongly recommended |
| Village Enclosure | Suit + tie | Smart day attire | Hat or headpiece recommended |
| Windsor Enclosure | Smart casual (no jeans, no shorts, no sportswear) | Smart day attire | Optional |
This guide walks through what's required, what's allowed, and what's banned in each enclosure for 2026, plus the FAQ on hat dimensions, fascinator rules, jumpsuit rules, and the most-asked enforcement questions on the gate.
Key changes / clarifications for 2026 [Ascot Authority dress-code update, Spring 2026]:
- Jumpsuits are formally permitted in the Royal Enclosure (as long as full-length and otherwise compliant). This codifies what was a discretionary allowance in 2025.
- Fascinator rule clarification: the 4-inch (10cm) minimum base diameter requirement for women's hats in the Royal Enclosure remains; fascinators that don't meet this are turned away at the gate.
- Trouser-suits (women) in Royal Enclosure: permitted in matching colour with full-length trousers, jacket of similar/contrasting colour, no see-through fabrics.
- Top hats may be removed inside the Royal Box / restaurant areas but must be worn outside in the parade ring and on the lawns.
- Children under 10 are exempt from the Royal Enclosure dress code at the discretion of the steward at the gate.

Royal Enclosure dress code 2026
The Royal Enclosure is the most exclusive of the four enclosures and has the strictest dress code at any UK racecourse. Stewards on the gate enforce the rules and turn away non-compliant guests โ there's a reduction-suit hire counter on-site for emergencies.
Men โ Royal Enclosure
Required:
- Morning dress in black, grey or navy. The full set: morning coat (cutaway tail), waistcoat (any colour, traditionally pale grey, dove or buff), full-length trousers (black or grey, often striped), collared shirt and tie.
- Top hat in black, grey or "Ascot grey" โ taken off inside the Royal Box or restaurants but must be worn in the paddock and on the lawns.
- Black or charcoal-grey shoes, polished, dress shoes only (no loafers, no boat shoes, no trainers).
Not allowed:
- Lounge suits (regular business suits) โ these belong in Queen Anne, not Royal Enclosure
- Cravats in place of ties
- Bow ties (other than at evening events)
- Coloured trousers in non-traditional shades
- Patterned waistcoats that aren't formal-weight (e.g. Hawaiian print is right out)
Hire option: Anderson & Sheppard / Henry Poole rent full morning dress sets for the meeting; the on-site Bagatelle counter at Ascot also rents from approximately GBP 90 per day.
Women โ Royal Enclosure
Required:
- Formal day dress, jumpsuit OR matching trouser-suit of formal day-wear standard
- Hat with a base of 4 inches (10cm) or greater diameter โ strict enforcement
- Knees covered when standing
- Straps of at least one inch (2.5cm) wide at the shoulder
Newly clarified for 2026:
- Jumpsuits formally permitted when full-length, of formal-day-wear quality, and otherwise compliant
- Trouser-suits permitted in matching colour with full-length trousers, jacket of similar or contrasting colour, no see-through fabrics
- Fascinators must meet the 4-inch base rule โ small fascinators that don't are turned away
Not allowed:
- Strapless dresses or tops โ straps of 1 inch+ width required
- Off-shoulder, halter-neck, sheer-strap or "cold-shoulder" cuts โ straps must be on the shoulder, not below
- Midriff-exposing tops of any kind
- Mini skirts โ knees must be covered when standing
- Small fascinators with base less than 4 inches (10cm)
- Hats inside restaurants โ many remove hats while seated for meals; hats must be worn on the lawns and in the paddock
Royal Enclosure access โ how to get in
Royal Enclosure tickets are not on general sale โ they require a sponsor (an existing Royal Enclosure member) to nominate the applicant. First-time applicants typically apply through the Royal Enclosure ballot, with strict identity and history checks. The exception is on-course attendance via a member's guest ticket โ these are limited and circulate among existing membership networks.
The vast majority of racegoers are not in the Royal Enclosure. The Queen Anne Enclosure (immediately adjacent) has the same view of the racing without the access requirement and with a slightly relaxed dress code โ see our Queen Anne Enclosure section below.
For our broader Royal Ascot guide see the Royal Ascot 2026 preview.
Queen Anne Enclosure dress code 2026
The Queen Anne Enclosure runs alongside the Royal Enclosure and shares the same paddock view of the home straight. Dress is formal but not compulsory morning dress โ a smart suit and tie is the floor for men.
Men โ Queen Anne
Required:
- Suit (jacket and full-length trousers) of matching colour
- Collared shirt + tie
- Smart shoes โ leather business shoes preferred; no trainers, no boat shoes, no flip-flops, no sandals
Permitted (in addition to a standard suit):
- Optional waistcoat (with or without)
- Three-piece suit is welcome
- Morning suit is welcome (Queen Anne ticket-holders are allowed to wear Royal Enclosure dress, just not vice versa)
- Coloured ties / pocket squares within the bounds of formal taste
Not allowed:
- Jeans of any kind (denim is banned across all four enclosures)
- Shorts
- Sportswear / tracksuits
- Polo shirts (no collar = no entry)
- Trainers / running shoes / canvas shoes
- T-shirts under a jacket
Women โ Queen Anne
Required:
- Smart day dress, formal trouser-suit, or smart jumpsuit
- Hat or fascinator strongly recommended (not strictly mandatory but the social expectation is high โ the photographers will treat a hat-less guest as a tourist)
Permitted:
- Strapless / off-shoulder dresses are permitted in Queen Anne (unlike Royal Enclosure)
- Mini-length dresses are permitted if of formal-occasion quality
- Smaller fascinators are permitted (the 4-inch base rule does NOT apply outside Royal Enclosure)
- Smart trousers, palazzo pants, culottes with appropriate top
- Wedge heels, block heels, formal flats for comfort over the long day
Not allowed:
- Beachwear / playsuits
- Denim of any kind
- Visible sportswear
- Football tops / branded sportswear
Queen Anne practicalities
The Queen Anne badge gives access to the parade ring, the trackside lawns adjacent to the Royal Enclosure, the paddock viewing areas, and a wide range of food + drink outlets. It does not include access to the Royal Enclosure or the Royal Box / Royal restaurants โ those are members-only.
Queen Anne is the most popular enclosure for Royal Ascot first-timers and, in terms of viewing quality, is the second-best on the course. For the dress effort and the social occasion, Queen Anne is most racegoers' "Royal Ascot" experience.
For our broader guide on attending Royal Ascot see the Royal Ascot 2026 preview.
Village Enclosure dress code 2026
The Village Enclosure is the newest of the four enclosures (introduced in 2017 to a runaway success) and offers a more relaxed but still smart day. It sits on the inside of the course alongside Heath Park, with its own purpose-built grandstand, food village and entertainment.
Men โ Village
Required:
- Suit (jacket and matching trousers), collared shirt, tie
- Same shoes rule as Queen Anne โ leather, smart, no trainers
- Three-piece, two-piece, lounge or morning suit all welcome
Practical:
- Slightly more relaxed than Queen Anne โ coloured shirts, more adventurous tie patterns, summer-weight wool/linen suits all very common
- The Village in 2025 saw a higher proportion of light-grey, pastel and patterned suits compared to Queen Anne's more conservative palette
Women โ Village
Required:
- Smart day attire โ dress, jumpsuit, smart trouser-suit
- Hat or fascinator/headpiece strongly recommended โ the Village is among the most-photographed of the enclosures and turns up some of the meeting's most adventurous millinery
- Smart shoes โ heels, wedges, dress flats; no trainers, no flip-flops
Permitted:
- All the Queen Anne allowances (strapless, off-shoulder, mini)
- More stylistic latitude โ bolder colour palettes, statement jewellery, larger sun hats are very on-brand for the Village
Village access and practicalities
The Village is the most relaxed atmosphere of any of the enclosures, with a full festival-village layout, live music, themed bars and DJs after racing on Friday and Saturday. Access is via a separate entrance on the inside of the course; there's no parade-ring or paddock-rail access from the Village (it's on the opposite side to the Royal/Queen Anne side), but there are large screens and excellent trackside viewing on the home straight.
Windsor Enclosure dress code 2026
The Windsor Enclosure is the most family-friendly and most relaxed of the four. Children attend free with a paying adult and the dress code is smart casual.
Men โ Windsor
Required:
- Smart casual โ collared shirt and trousers, or a polo shirt with chinos; no jeans, no shorts, no sportswear
- Smart shoes preferred โ clean trainers may be permitted at steward discretion but are not actively encouraged
Permitted (Windsor only โ NOT in any other enclosure):
- Polo shirts with collar (the only enclosure where this is OK)
- Chinos / smart trousers without a jacket
- Cleaner trainers at steward discretion
Not allowed (across all enclosures, Windsor included):
- Jeans
- Shorts
- Football tops / sportswear branding
- Beachwear / vests / tank tops
Women โ Windsor
Required:
- Smart day attire โ dress, smart trousers, jumpsuit
- Hat optional but encouraged โ half the Windsor crowd wear a fascinator at minimum
Windsor access and atmosphere
Windsor is the biggest of the four enclosures by capacity and the most family-friendly. It has its own betting hall, food + drink outlets and a children's entertainment area. It's the value-pick of the four โ full Royal Ascot experience at the lowest ticket price.

Royal Ascot dress code FAQ
What is the strictest part of the Royal Enclosure dress code?
The 4-inch (10cm) hat-base diameter rule for women is the most-enforced single rule. Stewards on the gate physically check fascinators and small hats with a measuring template; non-compliant guests are turned away. Carry a backup hat in your car if there's any doubt.
Can I wear a jumpsuit in the Royal Enclosure 2026?
Yes. The 2026 dress code formally permits jumpsuits in the Royal Enclosure provided they are:
- Full-length (ankle-length trousers)
- Of formal day-wear quality (silk, crepe, satin, structured tailoring โ not casual-fabric)
- Compliant on shoulder coverage (1-inch+ straps)
- Worn with an appropriate hat (4-inch base minimum)
This is a meaningful 2026 update and reflects the broader fashion direction the Ascot Authority has taken since 2024.
Can I wear trousers / a trouser-suit in the Royal Enclosure?
Yes โ matching colour, full-length trousers, jacket of the same or contrasting colour. No see-through or sheer fabrics. The trouser-suit allowance has been in place since 2017 and remains for 2026.
Are strapless dresses allowed?
No in the Royal Enclosure (straps must be 1 inch or wider). Yes in Queen Anne, Village, and Windsor enclosures.
What about fascinators vs hats?
In the Royal Enclosure, women's headwear must have a base of 4 inches (10cm) or greater. A fascinator that doesn't meet this is turned away. In all other enclosures the fascinator rule does not apply โ a small headpiece is fine.
Can men wear a navy or coloured morning suit?
Black, grey or navy morning suits are all permitted in the Royal Enclosure. Beyond those three colours (e.g. burgundy, green, or unconventional summer hues) the steward may exercise discretion โ most racegoers stick to traditional black or grey.
Are top hats compulsory in the Royal Enclosure?
Yes for men, on the lawns and in the paddock. They may be removed inside the Royal Box, the restaurants, and the indoor seating areas. The most common rookie mistake is forgetting the hat for the parade-ring walk.
Can I bring a child to Royal Ascot?
Children under 18 attend free in the Windsor Enclosure with a paying adult; the Village Enclosure also welcomes children. The Royal Enclosure permits children under 10 at steward discretion (and they're exempt from the dress code). Children are NOT permitted in some restaurants and box areas.
What's banned across ALL enclosures
These items are not permitted regardless of which enclosure you're in:
- Jeans of any kind โ banned everywhere, including denim shirts and jackets
- Shorts โ including chino shorts and any kind of casual shorts
- Sportswear โ football tops, tracksuit bottoms, any branded sportswear
- Beachwear / playsuits โ vest tops, tank tops, sundresses without straps
- Trainers / running shoes / Birkenstocks โ except at Windsor steward discretion
- Bare-midriff tops โ banned across all enclosures
- Hen / stag party themed outfits โ not appropriate for Royal Ascot's atmosphere
- Visible branding above belt โ small logos on shirt cuffs are fine; large branded logos are not
- Camera + lens combinations of professional kind without an Ascot media pass
Practical advice for first-timers
- Bring a backup hat in the car. If your fascinator gets rejected at the gate, you can swap to a backup before re-trying.
- Walk the lawns in your shoes for 30 minutes the day before. New shoes + the long Royal Ascot day = blisters by 4pm.
- Check the weather and pack accordingly. A pashmina in the bag for women, a tweed waistcoat option for men. Royal Ascot has had everything from 30ยฐC to thunderstorm conditions in the same week historically.
- Photograph your outfit on the lawn outside enclosures, not inside. Most enclosures have specific photo zones; ask a steward before snapping in restricted areas.
- The Bagatelle on-site hire counter has emergency morning suits, ties, top hats and rentable accessories from approximately GBP 90 per day for full sets.
