Bet365 Gold Cup 2026: The Jumps Season Finale
Saturday 25 April is the last major day of the National Hunt season. Sandown Park's Bet365 Gold Cup Day closes the jumps calendar with three feature races, the Bet365 Celebration Chase, the Bet365 Gold Cup, and the Oaksey Chase โ before the flat takes over from the Guineas onwards.
The Bet365 Gold Cup (3:35pm, 3 miles 5 furlongs) is the headline. Formerly known as the Whitbread Gold Cup, it is one of the most historic handicap chases in the calendar โ first run in 1957 and won by legends including Arkle, Desert Orchid, and Pendil.
It is also genuinely different from the Grand National or the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Sandown's tight, undulating track and the brutal Railway Fences at the end of the back straight test jumping technique more than pure stamina. The hill finish separates genuine stayers from hopeful chancers. Horses who act at Cheltenham or Aintree do not automatically handle Sandown โ course form matters here more than almost anywhere else in jumps racing.
This is also the final chance for owners, trainers and punters to end the season on a high. Willie Mullins, Gordon Elliott, Dan Skelton, Paul Nicholls, and Venetia Williams all target this card seriously. Expect strong fields across all three feature races.

Why Sandown Is Different
Sandown Park is a right-handed course with two defining features:
-
The Railway Fences โ three fences in quick succession on the back straight, jumped at pace with horses spread across the track. Horses who are not accurate at the Railway Fences rarely win at Sandown. These fences have ended more Bet365 Gold Cup hopes than any other on the course.
-
The uphill finish โ Sandown has one of the toughest finishes in jumps racing. The final furlong is uphill and catches out horses who are not genuine stayers. Horses that look in control at the third-last often weaken up the hill. Horses being ridden with patience often produce a late surge that the leaders cannot match.

Key Runners for the Bet365 Gold Cup 2026
Market Leaders
Hitman (Paul Nicholls, Harry Cobden) โ 7/1 favourite
Paul Nicholls is the trainer to beat at Sandown. He has won the Bet365 Gold Cup a record six times and trains horses specifically for this course. Hitman won at Sandown in February in a Grade 2 chase and has been prepared for this race since.
Cobden rides. He is now one of the most experienced big-race jockeys in National Hunt racing, and his partnership with Nicholls has a better Sandown strike rate than any other trainer-jockey combination.
Why he can win: Proven course form, top yard, ideal weight at 11st 2lb, race-fit. The profile is perfect for a Bet365 Gold Cup winner.
Risk: Slightly over-exposed. The market has him at 7/1 for good reason. Value may lie elsewhere.
Cooper's Cross (Venetia Williams, Charlie Deutsch) โ 8/1
Venetia Williams targets the spring handicap chases with precision. Cooper's Cross fell at the third-last in the Grand National at Aintree on April 11 โ he was travelling well at the time and would have been in contention. The fall is a major positive for his Sandown chance: he has stamina to burn after only half a race of effort.
He carries 10st 11lb โ an ideal weight in the Bet365 Gold Cup range. Charlie Deutsch is an underrated jockey who rides Sandown well.
Why he can win: Freshened up by the GN fall, ideal weight, Williams in top form at the end of the season.
Risk: Fallers can lose confidence. The Railway Fences are a stern test for a horse who has just had a bad experience.
Johnnywho (Dan Skelton, Harry Skelton) โ 9/1
Dan Skelton's Johnnywho won the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March and was then fifth in the Grand National. Back in trip to 3m 5f on drier ground should suit. The Skelton yard is in outstanding form with a strike rate above 30% in April.
Why he can win: Ultima winner (a key Sandown trial), race-fit, improving trajectory.
Risk: His best form is at Cheltenham. Sandown's flatter track is a slightly different test.
Each-Way Plays
Kitty's Light (Christian Williams, Jack Tudor) โ 12/1
Christian Williams's Kitty's Light won the Scottish Grand National and the Eider Chase in 2023 โ he loves a staying handicap chase. Back in form after a quiet winter, he runs off 11st 1lb. Veterans with course form over a staying trip are always worth a second look in this race.
Ashdale Bob (Jamie Snowden, Gavin Sheehan) โ 14/1
Jamie Snowden's Ashdale Bob is an improver. He has won two of his last three chases and the handicapper has finally stopped penalising him harshly. At 14/1 each-way with five places, he represents the best value in the top half of the market.
Storm Heart (Olly Murphy, Fergus Gregory) โ 18/1
The longshot with a profile. Storm Heart ran second in the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury in November and has had a light campaign since. A fresh horse with Newbury form lines is exactly the sort of runner who wins the Bet365 Gold Cup at a price.
Responsible betting reminder: This is a 20-runner handicap chase over 3m 5f and 22 fences. Use each-way bets (most bookmakers pay five places), keep stakes modest, and set a budget before the card starts.
Trends: What Wins the Bet365 Gold Cup
Trend 1: Weight matters, but less than at Aintree
Unlike the Grand National, the Bet365 Gold Cup is not weight-crushing. The average winning weight over the last 15 years is 10st 12lb. Horses carrying 11st 7lb+ have a poor record, but the spread is narrower than at Aintree.
Optimal weight band: 10st 6lb to 11st 3lb.
Trend 2: Course form is almost essential
Thirteen of the last fifteen winners had previously run at Sandown. Of the two that hadn't, one was a top-class Irish raider and the other was a Nicholls-trained improver. The Railway Fences are simply too specific for most horses to handle first time.
If a horse has never run at Sandown before, be very sceptical.
Trend 3: Age matters โ 8 and 9-year-olds dominate
Eleven of the last fifteen winners were aged 8 or 9. The profile is:
- Experienced enough to handle the fences
- Young enough to sustain effort up the hill
- Haven't been raced too hard at a high level
7-year-olds rarely win. 11-year-olds and older rarely win.
Trend 4: Paul Nicholls wins this race
Nicholls has six wins in the Bet365 Gold Cup โ more than any other trainer. If he has a fancied runner, take notice. His current hope is Hitman.
Trend 5: Ultima Handicap Chase form
The Ultima at the Cheltenham Festival (Tuesday of the Festival, 3m 1f handicap chase) has a strong link to Sandown. Three Ultima runners have won the Bet365 Gold Cup since 2017, and several more have placed. If a horse ran well in the Ultima, it has proven stamina and class for this race. Johnnywho won the 2026 Ultima.
Trend 6: Recent activity matters
Nine of the last ten winners had run within 40 days of the Bet365 Gold Cup. Horses brought straight from winter training tend not to be fit enough for Sandown's test. Look for horses who ran at Aintree, Cheltenham, or Ayr in March/April.
Applying the Trends
Working through the shortlist:
- Hitman โ Course form โ | Weight โ | Age 9 โ | Nicholls โ | Recent run โ (all 5)
- Cooper's Cross โ Weight โ | Age 9 โ | Recent run โ (Grand National) (3 of 5)
- Johnnywho โ Weight โ | Age 8 โ | Ultima winner โ | Recent run โ (4 of 5)
- Ashdale Bob โ Course form โ | Weight โ | Age 8 โ (3 of 5)
The trends favour Hitman and Johnnywho most strongly. Both pass 4-5 of the key filters.
Bet365 Gold Cup 2026 โ Our Selections
NAP โ Johnnywho (Each-Way, 9/1)
The Ultima winner with perfect trends. Dan Skelton's yard is in devastating form this month and Johnnywho brings proven class down from the Cheltenham Festival. His weight (10st 13lb) is ideal and he stays well.
The one concern is the unknown at Sandown. If you believe in the Skelton yard's current form, Johnnywho at 9/1 each-way with five places is the bet of the day.
Second string โ Hitman (Each-Way, 7/1)
Nicholls-Cobden combination, course form, ideal weight, race-fit. If Johnnywho does not handle the Railway Fences, Hitman is the most likely winner. The only reason he is second string rather than the NAP is that 7/1 is a skinny price for a 20-runner handicap.
Longshot โ Ashdale Bob (Each-Way, 14/1)
The improver. Jamie Snowden's horse is on a handicap mark 7lb lower than his true rating. At 14/1 with five places paid, a place pays 3.5x your stake and a win pays 18x.
Staking Strategy
A sensible Bet365 Gold Cup punt:
- ยฃ5 each-way Johnnywho at 9/1 = ยฃ10 total, potential return ยฃ52.50 (win)
- ยฃ5 each-way Ashdale Bob at 14/1 = ยฃ10 total, potential return ยฃ77.50 (win)
- ยฃ20 total stake across two selections
If either wins: profit. If one places while the other doesn't: break-even or small profit. If neither places: ยฃ20 lost.
Compare that to a single ยฃ20 win-only bet on Hitman at 7/1: profit only if Hitman wins outright (~12% chance based on the market). Each-way across two longer-priced selections has significantly better expected value.
The Other Two Features
Bet365 Celebration Chase (3:00pm, 2m, Grade 1) Jonbon (Nicky Henderson, Nico de Boinville) is the 4/7 favourite. Too short to back. Look at El Fabiolo (Willie Mullins, Paul Townend) at 3/1 as an each-way play if he runs.
Bet365 Oaksey Chase (4:10pm, 2m 4f, Listed) A more open contest. Follow the Paul Nicholls runner โ he has a strong record in this race.
