The St Leger Festival 2026 runs Thursday 10 to Sunday 13 September at Doncaster, and the St Leger Stakes itself is run on the Saturday. This page is the preview record: what the ante-post market and this year's trial form say before the field is confirmed. It is published now, with 17 days to run, and updated as the picture firms up. Nothing on this page is a tip until the runners are declared; before that, a call on a horse that might not even take part is a guess wearing a name.
The last of the five British Classics closes the season by asking a question the others do not: which of this year's three-year-olds genuinely stays 1 mile 6 furlongs 115 yards. By September the generation has already run through the Guineas, the Derby and the Oaks, and the market by and large knows which of them handle a step up in trip. The horse that wins is usually the one whose whole summer has pointed at Doncaster.

The ante-post picture, before declarations
The clearest form line into this year's race came out of York, not Doncaster. Maltese Cross beat Epsom Derby winner Christmas Day in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at the Ebor Festival, over a mile and a half, for William Haggas and Tom Marquand. A Derby-form reversal at a longer trip than Epsom is precisely the shape of evidence a Leger trial is meant to produce, and it is currently the single strongest piece of public form pointing at Doncaster. That is a form line, not a live price: we do not publish an ante-post book on this page, and a settled result price from a trial is not the same thing as where a horse trades for the Leger itself. Ante-post St Leger markets typically move fast on exactly this kind of evidence: a horse can be a big price in May or June before anyone knows it stays a mile and six, and firm in sharply once it has answered that question at a track like York. Maltese Cross's Voltigeur win is the sort of result that moves a market, whatever price it settles at once bookmakers have had time to react to it.
Two things are worth holding onto before this page updates further. First, Aidan O'Brien's yard has won three of the last three runnings of the St Leger and sends a Leger-shaped horse most years without needing the Voltigeur to point the way; whatever Ballydoyle brings to Doncaster deserves the same respect it gets every year, form line or not. Second, non-runner-no-bet terms matter more here than in almost any other Classic, because the Leger habitually loses intended runners between now and the final declaration, whether to injury, to a change of plan, or to the Curragh's own St Leger the following weekend. Betting ante-post without NRNB on this race is a specific and avoidable risk.
