See the St Leger Festival live hubThe St Leger Festival runs from Thursday 10 to Sunday 13 September 2026 at Doncaster, nineteen days after the Ebor Festival finished.
That gap is the shortest meaningful bridge in the Flat calendar between a major trial meeting and the Classic it feeds. The St Leger itself, run over 1m 6f 115y on the Saturday, is the oldest of the five Classics and the final leg of the Triple Crown. It is also the only one that asks a three-year-old to stay that far, which is why the trials that matter are the staying trials, and why York in August is the most reliable pointer of the lot.
The festival's other Group races are worth noting for the same reason. The May Hill Stakes on the Thursday is the two-year-old fillies' championship of the meeting, and the Doncaster Cup on the Friday is a genuine staying test at 2m 2f, which makes it the natural next stop for the older horses who ran in York's Lonsdale Cup.
One race at the Ebor Festival stands out as a Leger pointer, and it produced a form reversal that changes the picture.

The Great Voltigeur reversed the Derby
The Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes (Group 2, 1m 4f) on the opening Wednesday is the traditional St Leger trial, run over a trip and on a galloping track that both point in the right direction.
This year Maltese Cross won it at 9/4 under Tom Marquand for William Haggas, and the horse he beat was Christmas Day, the Derby winner. That is a straight reversal of Epsom form, achieved over a longer trip than the Derby, which is exactly the shape of evidence a Leger punter is looking for.
Two things make it more interesting than a routine trial result.
The first is the trip. A horse who improves for the step up from 1m 4f to 1m 6f is a different proposition from one who was simply better on the day, and the Voltigeur is run far enough to start separating them. Maltese Cross winning it suggests a horse getting stronger as the distances lengthen, which is the profile the Leger rewards.
The second is that the Voltigeur was the cheapest race of the entire Ebor Festival to bet in, carrying a bookmaker margin of 11.0% over a fair book across just six runners. Small fields make for tight books, and tight books usually mean a market that is confident about the shape of the race. The market was confident here and it was right, which makes the result more informative rather than less.
We covered the race in full in the Great Voltigeur 2026 result.
What does not transfer
The bridge from York to Doncaster is narrower than it looks, and most of the Ebor Festival's form has nothing to say about the St Leger.
The sprinters are irrelevant. The Nunthorpe and the Roses Stakes were run over five furlongs. Nothing that contested them will be seen at Doncaster over a mile and six.
The Juddmonte form is a different question. Item beat a strong field over 1m 2f and the interesting conversation about that horse is an autumn one over middle distances, not a staying one. Our Arc reaction piece covers where that form points instead.
The fillies' form points elsewhere too. Kalpana's Yorkshire Oaks win and Libertango's Lowther are both live pieces of form, but the Leger is not their target and the fillies' Classic programme has already run its course this season.
And the handicap form transfers least of all. Sixteen of York's twenty-eight races were handicaps or nurseries. They were competitive, they were valuable, and almost none of them tell you anything about a Classic. A horse improving through the handicap ranks at York in August is on a completely different curve to a Group-class three-year-old being aimed at Doncaster.
That leaves the Voltigeur, the Lonsdale Cup for the older stayers heading to the Doncaster Cup, and very little else. Which is worth saying plainly, because the temptation after a big meeting is to treat every winner as a pointer to the next one.
