Why we are trying at all
The Lab has spent months proving a negative. 24 betting systems settled over 27,956 real British races, and at Starting Price every single one loses to the bookmaker's margin. Favourites, outsiders, each-way angles, accumulators: the leaderboard is a graveyard, and we publish it proudly because it is true.
But proving that everything loses raises the obvious next question, and it would be cowardly not to ask it. Knowing everything the data has taught us, what is the strongest attempt we can actually construct? Not another folk system off a forum, but the best shot a well-calibrated model, a clean dataset and a clear-eyed reading of how winning professionals operate can produce.
So we built it, and we put it live: Can we beat the bookies? Every pick is logged before the off, settled honestly, and published win or lose, and the strategy is unproven until a large sample says otherwise. This post is the story so far: the thinking behind the strategy, the early numbers, an honest analysis of what they do and do not show, and what we expect to happen from here.
