Each-Way at Star Sports

Standard each-way terms

Star Sports applies industry-standard each-way terms across its racing markets, with no enhanced-places programme on the Grand National, Cheltenham handicaps or other big festival races. The terms follow the conventional UK schedule:

Race typePlace fractionPlaces paid (typical)
Handicaps, 16+ runners1/4 the odds4 places
Handicaps, 12–15 runners1/4 the odds3 places
Handicaps, 8–11 runners1/5 the odds3 places
Non-handicaps, 8+ runners1/5 the odds3 places
5–7 runners (any)1/4 the odds2 places
Under 5 runnersWin only

These are the standard UK industry terms. They match what Ladbrokes and Coral offer, and the baseline that Bet365 and Paddy Power offer on standard each-way bets (before any enhanced-places promotion).

What Star Sports does not offer

  • Extra Places programme on the Grand National. Betfred runs 6 places on the 2026 National. William Hill as official sponsor pays 5 places. Paddy Power runs 6 places. Star Sports runs standard place terms only.
  • Extra Places on Cheltenham handicaps. Paddy Power, Coral and Ladbrokes all run enhanced place terms on selected Cheltenham handicaps (Coral Cup, County Hurdle, Plate, etc.) during the Festival. Star Sports does not have an equivalent programme.
  • Each Way Extra customiser. Bet365 and William Hill both offer "Each Way Extra" products that let you customise your each-way bet — choose more places at lower odds, or fewer places at higher odds. Star Sports has no customisable each-way tool.
  • Daily Super Extra Place Races (Betfred's flagship ongoing promotion). Star Sports has no equivalent daily extra-places programme.

Why this matters

For a serious each-way racing punter, the absence of extra places is a consistent value gap. The headline cases:

  • 2026 Grand National: backing a 40/1 e/w at Betfred pays 6 places at 1/4 the odds = a place return at 10/1 if the horse finishes 5th or 6th. At Star Sports, the same bet pays 4 places only (standard for 16+ runners). The difference on a decent-priced horse can be substantial.
  • Cheltenham Coral Cup: at Paddy Power, extra places extend to 5 or 6 places on the handicaps. Star Sports pays 3–4 places depending on field size.

If you bet each-way regularly on big handicaps or the Grand National, this feature gap costs real money over a season. It is one of the clearest arguments for using Betfred or Paddy Power as a primary racing account alongside Star Sports rather than in isolation.

Where Star Sports' each-way is still competitive

The standard each-way odds at Star Sports are not obviously worse than rivals — the industry-standard fractions deliver similar returns for similar field sizes once you account for the lack of extra places. For races under 8 runners where extra places don't apply, Star Sports is equivalent to the corporates.

And on the ante-post Championship races at Cheltenham — where Star Sports does run NRNB — the each-way product is standard UK fractions applied to a transparent £100,000 maximum ante-post liability. For ante-post each-way punters at size, Star Sports can still earn a portfolio slot on that dimension.
