York Ebor Extra Places

The Ebor Handicap closes York's four-day Ebor Festival in August. It is the biggest flat handicap in Europe by prize money, a staying handicap with a big field and no dominant favourite, which makes the each-way place terms one of the biggest things you can control.

Who runs extra places

Checked at the operators' own pages on 9 October unless stated:

  • QuinnBet runs extra-place races every day, listed on its own promotions page with the places and fraction for each race.
  • Kwiff offers what it calls boosted places on some races, but pays them at a fifth of the odds rather than a quarter, so each place returns less than under standard terms. Its betting rules let it withdraw the extra place if the field shrinks below a threshold.
  • LiveScore Bet runs no standing programme, only occasional feature-race promotions.
  • William Hill has a wider extra-places programme than most, according to our July research. We could not re-read its pages on 9 October.
  • Star Sports has no headline extra-places programme on the big handicaps.

Extra-place offers for the Ebor itself are usually confirmed in the week before the meeting, so check on the day rather than assuming last year's terms.

Why extra places matter here

In a big handicap the standard each-way terms pay only the first few home. Every extra place a firm pays is another finishing position that returns the place part of your bet, which is worth more in a race where the market is wide open. For the mechanics, see our each-way extra places explained guide.

Gamble Responsibly

Gambling should be entertaining and not seen as a way to make money. Never bet more than you can afford to lose. If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, help and support is available.
