Kilbeggan Racecourse
Summer-evening jumps racing in the Westmeath midlands
Kilbeggan is a National Hunt course at Loughnagore, about 1.6 km north of Kilbeggan town in Co. Westmeath, roughly an hour from Dublin via the M6. Racing has been recorded in the area since March 1840, with the current course established at Loughnagore in 1901; it has staged jumps racing exclusively since 1971. The track is a sharp, undulating, right-handed circuit of around nine furlongs (about one mile one furlong), with a tight turn after the penultimate fence and a short uphill run-in of roughly 300 yards to the line. A summer venue running mainly evening fixtures from May to September, it is best known for the Midlands National, a handicap chase staged in July that serves as a recognised trial for Galway.
