Roscommon Racecourse

Roscommon is a sharp, right-handed track of about one mile two furlongs. On the Flat it is a tight right-handed oval of nearly a mile and a quarter with a run-in of around three and a half furlongs and a steady rise to the line, making it a speed track rather than a testing one that favours handy, prominent horses. The jumps circuit is a roughly rectangular mile-and-a-quarter loop, generally flat but with a more undulating home straight; it has sharp bends, just five fences a circuit and a short run-in of about 200 yards.

Roscommon racecourse sits in the western midlands of Ireland. Unofficial racing is recorded from 1837, with the first official meetings held in 1885. Aside from a 12-year break between 1936 and 1948, racing has run continuously since. It is a modest provincial dual-purpose venue rather than a marquee track, staging both Flat and National Hunt cards. It runs roughly nine meetings a year, all between May and September, typically on a Monday or Tuesday and often as summer-evening fixtures.

For a small course the highlights are limited but real. Over jumps the feature is the Grade 3 Kilbegnet Novice Chase (about two miles, total fund around €40,000 — worth €24,000 to the winner in 2025), run at the end of September; Roscommon also stages the Connacht National Handicap Chase. The principal Flat race is the Listed Lenebane Stakes over about a mile and three furlongs (1m 3f 175y), run on the opening (Ladies') day of the July meeting. There is no major festival or famous meeting here; these are the only notable graded or listed contests on an otherwise routine summer programme.

Roscommon racecourse is in the town of Roscommon, County Roscommon, in the west of Ireland. It lies roughly 76 km north-east of Galway and about 136 km west of Dublin, making it reachable by road from both, with Roscommon town served by rail on the Dublin-Westport line. It is a low-key country track best known for relaxed summer-evening cards rather than big crowds or prestige, in keeping with its standing as one of Ireland's smaller provincial venues.
