Thirteen wins. A modern Irish Classic record.
Saturday 23 May, the Curragh: Gstaad (Ryan Moore, 4/11F) won the 2026 Irish 2000 Guineas by 3L from Distant Storm (Charlie Appleby / Godolphin) with stablemate Pacific Avenue 3rd. The performance was, per Sky Sports, a "romp" — Gstaad was a class above the field from the home turn.
The win is Aidan O'Brien's record-extending 13th Irish 2000 Guineas, stretching the modern-era record he already held. First Desert King in 1997; latest Gstaad in 2026. Across three decades, no trainer has come close.
The race result in numbers:
| Pos | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | SP | Margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gstaad | A O'Brien | Ryan Moore | 4/11F | — |
| 2 | Distant Storm | C Appleby | W Buick | (TBC) | 3L |
| 3 | Pacific Avenue | C Appleby | (TBC) | (TBC) | (TBC) |
The Newmarket form line, confirmed. Gstaad finished 2nd to Bow Echo at Newmarket on 2 May, beaten 2¾L but 8L clear of the rest. The Curragh ran exactly as the Newmarket margins predicted — Gstaad delivered against the lower-quality field, Distant Storm + Pacific Avenue chasing home for Godolphin as expected.
Three things to take from the result:
- The Bow Echo rematch is live. Royal Ascot St James's Palace Stakes (G1, 1m, 3yo colts) on Tuesday 16 June is the obvious next stop. Per Irish Times, Coolmore have the meeting in their sights.
- Gstaad's career record extends to 4 wins from 8 starts — never out of the top 2 in any start. The Coolmore stallion-ladder commercial case strengthens.
- Aidan O'Brien's 12 / 13 / 14 record in the race is a moat. The 12 wins to Paddington 2023; 13 with Gstaad 2026; the 14th will arrive sooner than later if the current Coolmore juvenile crop holds.
For the broader weekend wrap see our Irish Guineas Festival 2026 review, the Irish 1000G result piece (Precise upset True Love) and the Tattersalls Gold Cup result piece (Almaqam upset Minnie Hauk).
How the race ran
Gstaad tracked the pace from third on the rail. Ryan Moore settled the colt behind Distant Storm and Pacific Avenue through the back straight, moved up smoothly on the home turn, and asked Gstaad to quicken with 2 furlongs to run.
Gstaad pulled clear inside the final furlong. The margin reached 3L at the line; per Sky Sports, the win was "emphatic". Distant Storm ran on for 2nd; Pacific Avenue held 3rd. Godolphin's two-handed Curragh challenge filled the places behind the Coolmore favourite — exactly the result our 19 May post-declarations preview framed.
The Newmarket form line confirmed
At Newmarket on 2 May: Bow Echo (Boughey) beat Gstaad by 2¾L; Distant Storm 3rd, beaten ~5L by the winner; Pacific Avenue further back.
At the Curragh on 23 May: Gstaad beat Distant Storm by 3L; Pacific Avenue 3rd.
The form lines reconcile cleanly. Bow Echo is the senior 3yo miler at one tier above; Gstaad and Distant Storm sit at the same tier, with Gstaad the clear superior. The Royal Ascot St James's Palace Stakes — Bow Echo vs Gstaad rematch — is the editorial fixture of June.
Ryan Moore — the stable jockey delivers
Moore's Coolmore Irish 2000G ride was textbook. He settled Gstaad mid-division, let Godolphin's Distant Storm set the gallop, and produced the kind of late-flowing finish that has defined his Coolmore G1 wins for a decade.
The Sunday Irish 1000G ride was a different story (see our Irish 1000G result piece — Moore picked True Love over Precise and lost). But the Saturday Irish 2000G ride was the senior stable jockey doing exactly what Coolmore pay him for.
Aidan O'Brien — the 13th Irish 2000G in numbers
12 prior winners + Gstaad = 13. The full record:
- 1997: Desert King
- 2000: Bachir
- 2002: Rock Of Gibraltar
- 2007: Cockney Rebel
- 2008: Henrythenavigator
- 2010: Canford Cliffs
- 2011: Roderic O'Connor
- 2017: Churchill
- 2018: Saxon Warrior
- 2020s: Paddington (2023)
- 2026: Gstaad
The streak runs across 29 years. Vincent O'Brien held the previous trainer record at 4 Irish 2000G wins; Aidan O'Brien has more than tripled it.
Distant Storm + Pacific Avenue — Godolphin's chase
Charlie Appleby's two-handed Curragh attack ran exactly to form. Distant Storm carried the Newmarket 3rd-place flag into the rematch and held it; Pacific Avenue ran a brave 3rd. Both fillies' Godolphin route is now clearly the Royal Ascot SJP — they'll likely both run against Bow Echo + Gstaad on 16 June.

What it means for Royal Ascot
St James's Palace Stakes (G1, 1m, 3yo colts, Tuesday 16 June) — the rematch is in the diary.
The post-Curragh SJP ladder
| Horse | Trainer | Newmarket | Curragh | Royal Ascot SJP price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bow Echo | G Boughey | Won 9/2 | (skipped) | 7/4-2/1F defending |
| Gstaad | A O'Brien | 2nd 9/2 | Won 4/11F | 9/4-5/2 |
| Distant Storm | C Appleby | 3rd | 2nd | 4/1-5/1 each-way |
| Pacific Avenue | C Appleby | (didn't run NM) | 3rd | 12/1+ |
The structural shape: Bow Echo's Newmarket margin (2¾L over Gstaad) is the only data point that places either horse above the other. The Curragh confirmed Gstaad sits at the same form-line tier as he did at Newmarket; Bow Echo's 16 June status is now the central question.
Per Irish Times, Coolmore have the Royal Ascot SJP clash "in their sights". George Boughey's Bow Echo also signalled the SJP route post-Newmarket. Both horses are likely to declare.
The Coolmore stallion-ladder commercial dimension
Gstaad's 4 wins from 8 starts — never out of the top 2 — positions him as a Coolmore Stud stallion prospect for 2027. The Irish 2000G is the second-tier Group 1 mile (after Newmarket); his Curragh win confirms Group 1 quality on the public stud-fee scale.
Three further G1 wins before October's Champion Stakes would lock Gstaad into the top stallion-fee tier. The Royal Ascot SJP + Sussex Stakes + Prix du Moulin route is the conventional path; Gstaad is now on it.
What about Hawk Mountain?
Aidan O'Brien's deeper Coolmore 3yo entry was confirmed pre-race as Prix du Jockey Club-bound. The Chantilly G1 on Sunday 31 May is Hawk Mountain's target — that's the next Coolmore 3yo race day, six days from now. Coverage of the French Derby is now a near-term editorial requirement.
What it means for the older milers' division
No direct transfer to the older milers' G1s — Gstaad is a 3yo. But the Royal Ascot Queen Anne (Notable Speech 2/1F) is the older-miler championship the same Tuesday. The two G1 milers' titles will be decided 75 minutes apart.
