The Grand National is one of the hardest races in the world to call, and the numbers prove it. Across the 55 runnings from 1970 to 2026, the winner came home at 10/1 or bigger 76% of the time, and the outright favourite obliged just once in five. This is the complete roll of honour - every winning horse, its age, official starting price, jockey and trainer - alongside the age, market and training trends that only emerge once you have the whole picture rather than the last ten years.
Every row is source-verified against two independent records. Where the two disagreed on a price we have left it blank rather than guess, and the two years the race was not run - 1993, declared void after a false start, and 2020, cancelled in the pandemic - are shown for what they were, not skipped.
For the fences, the festival week and the day out, see the full Grand National Festival guide. For this year's runners and live prices, the Grand National racecard has the market as it moves.

Seven completed the course (Esha Ness, Cahervillahow, Romany King, The Committee, Givus A Buck, On The Other Hand and Laura's Beau). The Jockey Club voided the race and ruled out a re-run; bookmakers refunded an estimated £75 million in bets. There is no official winner. | |||||

What the trends tell you
Read these as history, not a system. The 76% strike rate for double-figure prices reflects how the National's 30 fences and big field level the form book, not a betting edge - the same chaos that lands a 100/1 shot like Mon Mome (2009) also beats most of the field every year. The favourite's one-in-five record says the market knows it too.
Age is the clearest signal. The youngest winners in the past half-century were the seven-year-olds Noble Yeats (2022) and Bindaree (2002); the eight-to-eleven band accounts for the overwhelming majority, and no winner has been older than twelve. Weight tells its own story: the handicap is built to bring them together, and most modern winners have carried somewhere between 10st and 11st 5lb.
None of this is advice. It is simply what 55 runnings actually did, and the National's appeal is precisely that the next one may ignore all of it.
Betting on the Grand National
Fancy a runner in this year's National? The bookmaker sign-up offers change every spring, and the biggest each-way places and best-odds-guaranteed deals are the ones worth comparing before you bet. We keep an up-to-date list on the Grand National betting offers page.
One caveat, given the trends above: they describe what has happened, not what will. The National is the least predictable big race of the year - that is the whole appeal, and the reason to stake only what you can afford to lose.
