The Welsh Grand National is Chepstow's midwinter marathon, a stamina-sapping handicap chase run on heavy December ground that has often decided the staying picture for the second half of the jumps season. This is the full roll of honour from 1970 to 2026 - winner, age, starting price, jockey and trainer - with the training trends that emerge across the whole history.
Every row is source-verified against two independent records; unsourced cells are left blank rather than guessed. Because it is a late-December race, it has several times been abandoned for frost or waterlogging - those years are shown honestly as not run rather than skipped.
For the track, see Chepstow Racecourse and the live racecards.

What the trends tell you
Read these as history, not a system. The Welsh National rewards bottomless stamina, and the trainers who have mastered it show up clearly - Martin Pipe's five winners lead the modern era, with Peter Scudamore prominent in the saddle. The other feature of the roll of honour is how often the race has not happened at all: midwinter frost and flooding at Chepstow have forced several abandonments, some rerun in January. None of this is advice, it is what the race and the weather have actually done.
