Why use such small unit stakes on a Goliath?
Because 247 bets adds up fast. A £1 unit stake means £247 outlay: most casual punters can't justify that. With 10p units the £24.70 cost is still meaningful but not eye-watering, and 4-5 winners can return enough to make the bet worthwhile. The big-numbers magic only really activates with 6+ winners.
Is a Goliath worth it?
Honestly, only as a special-occasion bet for major meetings (Grand National Day, Royal Ascot). With 8 selections and no singles, you typically need 4+ winners for a meaningful return, and the chance of all 8 winning is vanishingly small even at short prices. Model your scenarios first: a Lucky 63 (6 selections, 63 bets, includes singles) is almost always more efficient.
