Beverley Bullet 2026: a five-furlong Listed sprint on heavy ground

Sunday 30 August 2026, 14:15 BST. Beverley. William Hill Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes, Listed, five furlongs, heavy.

Eight sprinters line up for Beverley's Listed contest, and the going is the story before the form is. Heavy ground at the end of August is unusual, and it is a long way from the quick summer surfaces most of this field will have been racing on.

Jm Jungle is the highest rated runner in the race at 108, four pounds clear of anything else in the field. He has run 22 times, so there is plenty of evidence to work from, and he was seventh last time out.

Our model does not make him the most likely winner. It puts Argentine Tango on top at 19.5%, a T D Easterby sprinter with a course win from two starts here, and rates Jm Jungle at 11.8%, only fifth of the eight.

Five furlongs on heavy ground at Beverley is a specific test. The track rises steadily to the line, so a sprint that looks like a dash on paper turns into something more attritional when the ground goes against them. Horses who have proved they handle both the surface and the climb are worth more than usual.

A note on prices. We normally show you where the model and the market disagree. We are not putting figures on that for this race today, because our morning price snapshot for it does not add up: the eight quoted prices sum to less than a complete book, which is not something a real market does. That means the snapshot is incomplete or stale, and any "the market says X%" we printed from it would be invented precision. Everything below is drawn from ratings, form and our own model, all of which are priced independently of the bookmakers. Nothing on this page is a tip.

Why heavy ground matters more here than at most sprint tracks

Beverley's five-furlong course runs straight across the Westwood, and it climbs. From the two-furlong pole to the post the gradient rises continuously, with roughly a furlong of real climb to the line. Our Beverley course guide puts it plainly: the five-furlong track here is noticeably slower than the same trip at Thirsk or Catterick, because the gradient takes back whatever speed a horse carries from a flatter course.

Add heavy ground to that and the race changes shape. A five-furlong sprint is normally settled by early speed. On this track, in this ground, the last furlong asks a stamina question that a flat five furlongs never does. Horses that are quick but one-paced tend to be found out.

That has two practical consequences for reading the field.

Course form is worth more than usual. Three of the eight have won here. Elegant Erin has much the deepest record of them, three wins from seven starts at the track, with Argentine Tango a win from two and Beaujolais Nouveau a win from his only visit. The other five have never run at Beverley at all. Those are small samples and not proof of anything, but on a track this idiosyncratic they are the sort of evidence worth more than a bare rating. It is worth noting that the two with the strongest course records, Elegant Erin and Beaujolais Nouveau, are also the two lowest rated in the field on 85.

Ratings are worth slightly less. Official ratings are earned across all sorts of tracks and going. Jm Jungle's 108 is the highest mark in the field by four pounds, and on a fast, flat five furlongs it would count for a lot. On heavy ground up Beverley's hill it counts for less, because the conditions compress the field.

None of this tells you the top-rated horse will be beaten. It tells you the ground has widened the range of plausible winners, which is exactly what our model's numbers show: it spreads the eight runners between 19.5% and 9.6%, with no horse given better than a one-in-five shot.

Confirm the going before the off. Ground described as heavy in the morning can ease or worsen, and on this track that changes the race more than it would elsewhere.

The eight, and where our model lands

Every figure below is either an official rating, a career record, or our own model's estimate. None of it is derived from today's prices, for the reason set out in the overview.

Argentine Tango (T D Easterby, D Allan) is the model's pick at 19.5%. The case is course-specific rather than form-based: a win from two starts at Beverley, and three wins from eleven at five furlongs. He was 14th last time out, which is the obvious argument against him and a reason to read the model's enthusiasm with care.

Al Shabab Storm (M Appleby, C J Whiteley) is next on 14%. He won last time out and has a perfect record over this trip, though from a single run. Nineteen career starts, rated 102.

Washington Heights (K A Ryan, T Eaves) is rated 104, second highest in the field, with two wins from ten at the trip. He was eighth last time. The model has him at 12.9%.

Ain't Nobody (K A Ryan, K Stott) is rated 102 with two wins from seven at five furlongs, and was 13th last time out. The model gives him 11.9%.

Jm Jungle (J and S Quinn, Jason Hart) is top rated at 108, four pounds clear of the field, with three wins from 22 at the trip. He was seventh last time. The model puts him fifth of the eight on 11.8%, which is the interesting part: on official figures he is comfortably the best horse in the race, and the model still does not make him the most likely winner.

Beaujolais Nouveau (B Haslam, A Mullen) is rated 85 but has won on his only visit to Beverley, and was fourth last time out. The model rates him 10.3%.

Badri (M Herrington, Connor Beasley) was second last time and has 44 career starts, more than anyone else here. Rated 99, two wins from 16 at the trip, model 10%.

Elegant Erin (P T Midgley, Cam Hardie) has the best course record in the race, three wins from seven at Beverley, and five wins from 30 at five furlongs. She was third last time. Rated 85, the joint lowest, and the model's outsider on 9.6%.

Reading it honestly

The spread here is narrow. Nineteen and a half per cent down to nine and a half across eight runners means the model is saying, in effect, that it does not know. That is a reasonable thing for it to say about a Listed sprint on ground none of these horses has much proven form on.

It is also worth being blunt about the model's record. Over 9,111 races its top-rated pick has won 24.56% of the time, and flat staking those picks at starting price has returned a loss of 13.7%. Over the last 30 days that figure is minus 20.7%. On calibration it scores a Brier of 0.100 against the market's 0.092, so the market remains the better forecaster. A model preference is a hypothesis about a race, not an edge.

What the ratings and the going do suggest is that Jm Jungle's 108 was earned in conditions unlike today's, and that on this track, in this ground, a bare figure is worth less than usual. Whether that is priced correctly is a judgement, and today we cannot tell you what the price actually is.

The model's full reasoning for every runner sits on the AI Race Predictor, and its running record is on the track record page. We have also written up how often it disagrees with the market across today's card, including which of today's price snapshots we trust. Nothing here is a tip.
