Champions Day 2026 at a glance

British Champions Day 2026 is on Saturday 17 October 2026 at Ascot, and the first race is due off at 12:55. It is a single afternoon built around five Group 1 championships, with supporting races alongside them, including the Balmoral Handicap over a mile.

ITV1 shows the meeting live and free to air in the UK. The channel details, and how to stream the races on a phone or laptop, are further down this page, along with the each-way place terms and how they change with the size of the field.

This page keeps the practical details in one place: the race times, the channel and the terms. For the wider picture of the meeting, the British Champions Day festival hub links everything together, and the British Champions Day tips page looks at what tends to win the Champion Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. The declared runners, the form and the morning's prices sit on the Ascot racecard, where the StableBet Ratings also appear once the model runs on the morning of the meeting.

The Champion Stakes is the richest race of the afternoon. Anyone planning an afternoon around one race should check its off time on the racecard, because the running order is set by the course each year.

The 2026 card, as declared on Friday 16 October

These are the times and fields for the 2026 running on Saturday 17 October, as declared on Friday 16 October. Field sizes count declared runners, and the winner's prize is the first-place share shown on the declared card, not the race's total fund. For scale, the 2025 meeting was worth £4.35m across its seven races, with the Champion Stakes a £1.3m race and the QEII £1.1m. The each-way terms are the standard terms each race carries on the card at 11:50am on Friday.

Gates open at 10:30am. In 2026 the Champion Stakes is the sixth race, at 4:00pm, and the Balmoral closes the card at 4:35pm.

The going was changed to Good by 11:10am on Friday after about 3.5mm of rain that morning, with the good to firm patches removed from the description. That is the official word as of Friday midday, and it can change again before racing, so check the Ascot racecard on the morning.

For 2026, ITV's own racing schedule lists the programme from 12:45pm to 5:00pm on ITV1 and STV, ten minutes before the first race and well after the last, and it carries all seven Ascot races, from the two-year-old race at the start of the afternoon to the Balmoral Handicap at the end.

Reading the 2026 card

Twenty horses make the Balmoral, and the three listed after them are reserves who run only if one of the twenty is withdrawn in time. The race keeps four places whichever way that goes, because a handicap needs only 16 runners for four.

The Champion Stakes sits at the other end of the scale. Six are declared, and the best prices at 11:50am on Friday have Calandagan and Ombudsman joint favourites at 2/1, with Bay City Roller next at 6/1. With two places paid, an each-way bet on anything else returns on the place half only if it beats at least one of those two. Prices move through Friday evening and Saturday morning, so treat them as a snapshot rather than the odds you will get; the going report for Champions Day 2026 looks at the Friday prices race by race.

The headline race also has its own head-to-head preview, Ombudsman against Calandagan in the 2026 Champion Stakes. Once the races have been run, see the British Champions Day 2026 results for every winner and starting price.

The five championships

The meeting is built around five championships, one for each division of the Flat. All five are now Group 1 races, the Long Distance Cup having been raised from Group 2 in 2025. The running order is set each year; the dated card above gives the 2026 order.

ChampionshipGradeDistanceDivision
Long Distance CupGroup 11m 7f 209yStayers, the longest race of the day
Champions Sprint StakesGroup 16fSprinters
Fillies & Mares StakesGroup 11m 3f 211yMiddle-distance fillies and mares
Queen Elizabeth II StakesGroup 11mMilers, on the straight course
Champion StakesGroup 11m 1f 212yMiddle distances, the day's feature

The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes was first run in 1955. The Champion Stakes is much older: first run at Newmarket in 1877, it moved to Ascot in 2011 as the centrepiece of the new Champions Day.

The official distances look untidy because they are measured to the yard. The Champion Stakes is a few yards short of a mile and a quarter and the Long Distance Cup a few yards short of two miles, which is why racecards round them to 1m2f and 2m.

The two-year-old race and the Balmoral Handicap support the championships. The Balmoral is a handicap, and for each-way purposes it is a completely different betting race from anything before it.

TV channel and streaming

British Champions Day is on ITV1 in the UK, and on STV in Scotland. ITV's racing schedule lists each year's broadcast window and the races it carries.

Because ITV1 is free to air, there is nothing to pay to watch the Champion Stakes or any of the other championships at home. ITV Racing's programmes are also on ITVX, ITV's streaming service, where past programmes stay up to watch again. That makes it the simplest route on a phone or laptop, and the easiest way to catch a race you missed.

ITV warns on its schedule page that last-minute changes can happen. If you are watching for one race in particular, tune in a few minutes before its advertised time rather than on the dot.

No pay-TV channel is listed on this page. Check your racing channel's own listings.

Each-way terms, race by race

An each-way bet is two bets of the same stake: one on the horse to win, one on it to be placed. The place half pays a fraction of the win odds, and both the fraction and the number of places depend on how many run and whether the race is a handicap. Those rules do not change from year to year, so they are the part of this page worth learning once.

Standard place terms by field size

RunnersRace typePlace terms
5 to 7Any1/4 odds, 2 places
8 or moreNon-handicap1/5 odds, 3 places
8 to 11Handicap1/5 odds, 3 places
12 to 15Handicap1/4 odds, 3 places
16 or moreHandicap1/4 odds, 4 places

The count that matters is the number that actually run, not the number declared. A non-runner can drop a race into a lower band, so a 16-runner handicap that loses one horse goes from four places to three.

What that means on Champions Day

The championships are all non-handicaps, so each one pays three places at 1/5 odds if eight or more run, and two places at 1/4 odds if the field is between five and seven. A small Champion Stakes is the case to watch. With two places paid, an each-way bet on an outsider pays out on the place half only if that horse finishes first or second.

The arithmetic is plain. A £5 each-way bet costs £10. On an 8/1 shot in a six-runner race, the place half pays at 2/1, so second place returns £15 and you are £5 up on the bet as a whole. Third place returns nothing at all. In a small field with two horses the market rates well clear of the rest, the place half pays only if the outsider beats one of those two.

The Balmoral is the opposite case. As a handicap with 16 or more runners it pays four places at 1/4 odds, so a horse can finish fourth and still return part of the stake. The each-way calculator works out the returns for any price and set of terms before you bet.

Extra places

Some bookmakers pay an extra place on the biggest handicaps, and the Balmoral is the obvious candidate on this card. Those are promotions, not the standard terms, and they vary from firm to firm and race to race. The current Champions Day promotions are gathered on the British Champions Day offers page.

Bet responsibly

Decide before the first race what the whole afternoon can cost you, and count both halves of every each-way bet against that figure. Stop when it is spent, and never chase a losing race with a bigger stake on the next one. Free, confidential advice is available any time from BeGambleAware on 0808 8020 133. 18+.
