Saturday 16 May 2026, 14:35 BST. Newbury. BoyleSports Lockinge Stakes, Group 1, 1m, 4yo+. Going: Good. Winning time: 1m 36.27s. 10 runners.
Notable Speech (2/1F, Charlie Appleby / William Buick) won the 2026 Lockinge Stakes for Godolphin, delivering a commanding finish from midfield after Buick switched right over 2 furlongs out and produced a decisive late surge. William Haggas's More Thunder filled the runners-up spot; Karl Burke's Zeus Olympios was 3rd. Pre-meeting 6/4F Rosallion (Hannon / Levey) drifted in the betting and flopped out of the top 5 — the biggest favourite-flop of the spring after Amiloc's Yorkshire Cup 6th yesterday.
Result top 5:
- 1st Notable Speech (2/1F) -- C Appleby / William Buick (Godolphin)
- 2nd More Thunder -- W Haggas
- 3rd Zeus Olympios -- K R Burke
- 4th Dancing Gemini -- Roger Teal
- 5th The Lion In Winter -- A P O'Brien
Race shape: Buick employed a patient approach, tracking behind Damysus through the early stages before exploiting a gap to produce a decisive finishing burst. Notable Speech switched right over 2 furlongs out, pushed along and made rapid headway 1 furlong out, then led the final furlong and ran on well.
The major story -- Rosallion's flop. Hannon / Levey's 6/4F (which had drifted to 3/1+ at the off per the Juddmonte-money-on-outsider Racing Post note) finished out of the top 5. The Lockinge 2026 confirms the pattern of the Dante Festival's biggest favourites underperforming -- Amiloc 8/13F Yorkshire Cup 6th yesterday, Time For Sandals 4/1F Minster 8th on Wednesday. The two Group 2/Group 1 odds-on backers of the week both lost.
Editorial centrepiece -- Notable Speech back to the top of the milers' division. The 2024 (English) 2000 Guineas winner and 2025 Breeders' Cup Mile winner has now added a Group 1 Lockinge at age 5, making him a four-time Group 1 winner. The Royal Ascot Queen Anne (Tuesday 16 June) is now his natural target.
For the post-Lockinge Royal Ascot picture see our updated Royal Ascot 2026 ante-post page — Notable Speech is now the Queen Anne favourite. For the broader post-Classic-trials look-ahead see our Dante Festival 2026 review.

Winning time: 1m 36.27s. Going: Good (Good to Firm in places). Rosallion (Hannon / Levey, 6/4F pre-meeting) drifted in the betting on race-day and finished out of the top 5 per the result page — a flop comparable to Amiloc's Yorkshire Cup yesterday.
The winning ride -- Notable Speech (2/1F, William Buick)
William Buick rode a textbook patient mile ride at Newbury. Notable Speech was tracked behind Damysus through the back straight under Buick, then switched right over 2 furlongs out to find a clear running lane. Pushed along and made rapid headway 1 furlong out, led the final furlong, and ran on well to the line.
The pre-Lockinge 4-time Group 1 winner -- 2024 (English) 2000 Guineas, 2024 Sussex Stakes, 2025 Woodbine Mile, 2025 Breeders' Cup Mile -- has now added a 5th Group 1 at age 5. The Lockinge G1 was the missing British-domestic miler championship in his trophy cabinet.
Charlie Appleby's mile-championship year
The Godolphin / Appleby team's strength in older miler Group 1s is unmatched in 2026 — William Buick has partnered Notable Speech in every one of his Group 1 wins including the 2024 (English) 2000 Guineas, 2024 Sussex Stakes, 2025 Woodbine Mile, 2025 Breeders' Cup Mile, and today's Lockinge. Notable Speech is the obvious Royal Ascot Queen Anne favourite for the 16 June meeting.
The runner-up -- More Thunder
William Haggas's More Thunder ran a strong race in 2nd. Haggas's older miler division is a continuing strength of the yard; More Thunder is now firmly in the Queen Anne / Sussex Stakes Group 1 picture for the rest of 2026.
Rosallion's flop -- the shock of the meeting
Richard Hannon / Sean Levey's 6/4F Rosallion drifted in the market on race-day with one Racing Post note ("Rosallion on the drift in Lockinge as Juddmonte outsider attracts support") flagging the late-money pressure. He finished out of the top 5 in his seasonal reappearance after the long layoff since the 2025 Queen Anne (2nd to Docklands).
The 3-time Group 1 winner from 2023-24 (Lagardere, Irish 2000 Guineas, St James's Palace) has now lost momentum after the 2025 layoff. The Royal Ascot Queen Anne defence (for Rosallion) is now uncertain; Hannon's stable plan will need re-thinking.
Dancing Gemini and Zeus Olympios -- the next tier
Roger Teal's Dancing Gemini (4th) ran a clean race under Ryan Moore but couldn't match Notable Speech's late kick. Karl Burke's Zeus Olympios (3rd) had a strong run, briefly leading approaching the final furlong before being passed by Notable Speech and More Thunder.
The Dante-Festival-week favourite flops
Three of the four big festival favourites at the Dante Festival + Newbury cluster lost over the week:
- Wed: Time For Sandals 4/1F Minster — 8th
- Fri: Amiloc 8/13F Yorkshire Cup — 6th
- Sat: Rosallion 6/4F Lockinge — out of top 5
The only odds-on / favourite winner of the week was See The Fire (5/6F Middleton) on Thursday. The pattern is a sobering reminder that Group 1/Group 2 favourites are not safe at these meetings.

What it means for Royal Ascot Queen Anne (Tuesday 16 June)
The Lockinge → Queen Anne pipeline is the most reliable older-miler-G1 pipeline of the British calendar. Notable Speech's win at 2/1F has now made him the obvious Queen Anne favourite for 16 June at Royal Ascot.
Notable Speech -- Queen Anne 2/1F (expected)
Notable Speech's Lockinge win is the strongest Royal-Ascot-pipeline form line of the spring. Expect ante-post market compression:
| Bookmaker | Notable Speech Queen Anne (post-Lockinge) |
|---|---|
| Coral | 2/1 |
| Bet365 | 2/1 |
| William Hill | 9/4 |
| Star Sports | 2/1 |
| Betfred | 9/4 |
| Sky Bet | 11/4 |
The Appleby-Buick combination at Royal Ascot is one of the strongest retained pairings in the industry. Charlie Appleby has won the Queen Anne in recent years; for 2026 he is the natural odds-on prospect with Notable Speech.
Rosallion -- Queen Anne ante-post in question
Rosallion's Lockinge flop means the 3x G1 winner's Royal Ascot 2026 plan is now uncertain. The Queen Anne (5yo, 1m) is his natural target, but Hannon will need to be confident the horse can recover from the long-layoff form-line drop. Expect a Rosallion drift in Queen Anne ante-post markets from his pre-meeting 7/2-4/1 toward 8/1+.
The wider Queen Anne 2026 market

| 1= | Notable Speech | C Appleby | 2/1F | Lockinge winner Sat 16 May |
| 2 | Docklands | H Eustace | 5/1 | Defending 2025 Queen Anne winner |
| 3 | More Thunder | W Haggas | 7/1 | Lockinge 2nd |
| 4 | Rosallion | R Hannon | 8/1+ (drifting) | 2024 SJP winner; Lockinge flop |
| 5 | Field Of Gold | J & T Gosden | 10/1 | Irish 2000G target 23 May |
What's next for the Lockinge losers
More Thunder (2nd) is now in the Queen Anne, Sussex Stakes (Goodwood) and Prix Jacques le Marois conversation. Zeus Olympios (3rd) firms his Royal Ascot prep credentials for the Burke yard. Dancing Gemini (4th) — Roger Teal's 5yo — will likely revert to 1m2f for the Prince of Wales's or step up further. The Lion In Winter (5th, O'Brien) is the Coolmore mile-pipeline carrier.
Damysus's 6th ends his 4-in-a-row run with a first Group 1 defeat. Gosden's middle-distance / mile horse will need a class-drop to confirm next route.

The Lockinge in the wider 2026 picture

- Item (Thu) — Dante winner, 11/2, 5/1 Epsom Derby joint-favourite
- Rahiebb (Fri) — Yorkshire Cup winner, 4/1, 7/1 Royal Ascot Gold Cup

Responsible note
Race results are unpredictable. The 2026 Lockinge delivered the biggest favourite flop of the entire Dante Festival week — Rosallion 6/4F finished out of the top 5, joining Amiloc (8/13F Yorkshire Cup 6th) and Time For Sandals (4/1F Minster 8th) as the week's flops.
