Park House Stables at Kingsclere produced THREE feature winners across Thursday and Friday:
- Item (Dante winner) under Colin Keane — now 5/1 Derby joint-favourite
- See The Fire (Middleton winner) under Oisin Murphy — first ever dual Middleton winner
(Furthur and Tarriance flopped in the Yorkshire Cup on Friday but the yard's dual G2 wins were the headline.)
Balding's training day for the Dante Festival 2026 is the strongest single-trainer story of the spring. The Item-vs-Benvenuto-Cellini joint-favouritism at 5/1 for the Epsom Derby is the most evenly poised Derby market in years.
The week's biggest favourite-flops
Three of the four big festival favourites at the Dante Festival + Newbury lost:
- Wed: Time For Sandals 4/1F (Minster) — 8th of 13
- Fri: Amiloc 8/13F (Yorkshire Cup) — 6th of 7
- Sat: Rosallion 6/4F (Lockinge) — out of top 5 of 10
The only short-priced favourite who delivered: See The Fire 5/6F in the Middleton.
The pattern is a sobering reminder that Group 1/Group 2 favourites at the spring Festival aren't safe banker bets. The trends-aware each-way value picks (Item 11/2, Rahiebb 4/1, Notable Speech 2/1F) delivered; the deeply-backed odds-on horses didn't.

What we learned about the 2026 Classics + Royal Ascot
The Dante Festival 2026 + Lockinge week delivered the clearest reshape of the British flat-racing form picture in years. Five structural conclusions for the rest of the season:
1. The Epsom Derby is Item vs Benvenuto Cellini
Item (Andrew Balding / Colin Keane / Juddmonte) won the Dante by 2¾L at 11/2 and is now 5/1 Epsom Derby joint-favourite with Coolmore's Benvenuto Cellini (5/1, Chester Vase winner). The Coolmore-vs-the-field framing for Epsom 6 June is the most evenly poised Derby market in years — both Item and Benvenuto Cellini come from top-tier yards with 4¼L+ winning trial form lines, both ride confident horses for the Classic distance step-up.
Christmas Day's 3rd in the Dante (11/4F) keeps him in the Derby picture at 8/1 but doesn't strengthen the Coolmore-Camelot Derby form line. Action's 2nd in the Dante (4/1, Lordan) is arguably the more interesting Coolmore Derby form line — Wayne Lordan rode Lambourn to a 13/2 SP Derby win in 2025.

2. The Epsom Oaks is Legacy Link vs Amelia Earhart
Legacy Link (Gosden / Keane / Juddmonte) won the Musidora at 5/4F — John Gosden's 9th Musidora victory, equalling Sir Henry Cecil's all-time training record. Amelia Earhart (O'Brien) won the Cheshire Oaks (6 May) by 2L from Gosden's I'm The One.
The Epsom Oaks (5 June) is now a Gosden-vs-Coolmore filly-division duel — Legacy Link 7/2 + Amelia Earhart 5/2-3/1. Moments Of Joy's 7L 4th at the Musidora closed the chapter on the Musidora as a Coolmore vehicle in 2026.
3. Royal Ascot Queen Anne is Notable Speech's
Notable Speech (Appleby / Buick) won the Lockinge at 2/1F for his 5th career Group 1. The 2024 (English) 2000 Guineas + 2024 Sussex Stakes + 2025 Woodbine Mile + 2025 Breeders' Cup Mile winner is now firmly the Royal Ascot Queen Anne favourite at 2/1.
Rosallion's Lockinge flop ends the Hannon mile-Group-1 strangle on the early summer. Defending 2025 Queen Anne winner Docklands (H Eustace) remains a 5/1 each-way pick.
4. Royal Ascot Gold Cup is Scandinavia + Trawlerman vs the field
Yorkshire Cup winner Rahiebb (Varian / Dawson) at 4/1 has been cut from 12/1 to 7/1 for Royal Ascot Gold Cup. Scandinavia 2/1F (O'Brien, via the Saval Beg 23 May) and defending champion Trawlerman 10/3 (Gosden / Buick) head the market.
Amiloc's 8/13F flop in the Yorkshire Cup has hurt the Beckett stable's developing-staying-pipeline narrative. The Gold Cup 2026 market is now Scandinavia + Trawlerman + Rahiebb + Sweet William as the front-rank quartet.
5. Older milers + sprinters reshaped by Lockinge + Minster
Minster (Elmonjed 8/1 winner): the rebranded sprint headliner produced a shock 8/1 winner. Haggas's Elmonjed is heading to the Prix Maurice de Gheest (Deauville, August) per Haggas — NOT the Royal Ascot Diamond Jubilee. Kind Of Blue (4/1 Minster 2nd) is now the Diamond Jubilee each-way value pick at 6/1-7/1.
Lockinge (Notable Speech 2/1F): confirms Notable Speech's mile-championship year. The Queen Anne is his target; the Sussex Stakes (Goodwood, late July) is the natural late-summer route.

The Dante Festival + Lockinge week is the spring's classic-trial culmination. Now the calendar moves to the Classics + Royal Ascot phase.
Next Saturday (23 May) -- Irish 2000 Guineas Day at the Curragh
The Irish 2000 Guineas (G1, 1m, 3yo colts) is the headline race. Field Of Gold's redemption-arc bid is the centrepiece — the Gosden / Keane 4yo grey (a brilliant 2025 Irish 2000G + St James's Palace Stakes winner) was withdrawn from the Lockinge and rerouted to the Curragh after being 2nd in the Sandown Mile (24 April). Field Of Gold is the 8/13F ante-post favourite.
The race is also a Bow Echo rematch opportunity — the 2026 (English) 2000 Guineas winner could supplement to the Curragh. Other declared / probable runners: Distant Storm (Appleby), some Coolmore second-string colts.
