Thursday 14 May 2026, 16:05 BST. York Racecourse. Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes, Group 2, 1m2f56y, 3yo c/g. Going: Good. Winning time: 2m 10.80s. 8 runners.
Item (11/2, Andrew Balding / Colin Keane) won the 2026 Dante Stakes with a powerful late surge, beating Aidan O'Brien's Action (4/1, Wayne Lordan) by 2¾ lengths. Coolmore's hot favourite Christmas Day (11/4F, Ryan Moore) finished 3rd, beaten a further 1¾ lengths. The Juddmonte-bred unbeaten Frankel son is now 5/1 Epsom Derby favourite with most major firms after a Dante performance that brought the 5/5 trends profile to life.
Result top 5:
- 1st Item (11/2) -- A Balding / Colin Keane (Juddmonte)
- 2nd Action (4/1) -- A P O'Brien / Wayne Lordan -- 2¾L
- 3rd Christmas Day (11/4F) -- A P O'Brien / Ryan Moore -- 1¾L
- 4th King's Trail (14/1) -- C Appleby / William Buick -- 1¼L
- 5th Morshdi (10/3) -- W Haggas / Tom Marquand -- ½L
Race shape: Action led throughout under Wayne Lordan, dictating a steady gallop. Item was tracked towards the rear early under Colin Keane, came with a sweeping run from 3 furlongs out, took it up a furlong from home, and was pushed out for a comfortable 2¾L margin. Christmas Day (the hot favourite) maintained his pace from a forward position but had no answer when Item came alongside; Morshdi (joint-second favourite at 10/3) was held up for too long and never threatened.
The major losers -- the two pre-race joint-favourites both flopped relative to expectation. Christmas Day's third was a respectable run from the favourite but doesn't strengthen his Derby case. Morshdi's 5th was a meaningful Haggas-team underperformance after the Lingfield Derby Trial double-shot pre-race framing.
Editorial centrepiece -- Item's 5/5 trends scorecard fired. Our Dante Stakes 2026 preview had Item at 5/5 trends confirmed — unbeaten, ran within 31 days, won last time, not the clear favourite, top-yard. The format read came true in arguably the cleanest trends-scorecard validation of the spring after the Chester Vase.
For the post-race Derby implications see our Epsom Derby 2026 tips -- Item is now joint-favourite for Epsom at 5/1 with Coolmore's Benvenuto Cellini.

The winning ride -- Item (11/2, Colin Keane)
Colin Keane delivered the ride of the spring. Item was held up towards the rear from stall 1 under Keane, sat patiently as Action set the gallop, and began making headway to chase the leader 3 furlongs out. Keane asked for the effort 2 furlongs out and Item led 1 furlong out, then was pushed out comfortably to the line for a 2¾L margin.
The unbeaten Frankel son -- previously a winner at Kempton and Bath in 2025 as a 2yo -- is now 3 from 3 in his career, all his runs in different style and class. The Dante was his Group-class debut and he passed the test emphatically.
Andrew Balding -- the trainer's first Dante
This was Andrew Balding's first Dante Stakes -- a meaningful milestone for the Park House Stables operation that has been one of the most consistent producers of Royal Ascot and Classic-trial form in recent years. The Juddmonte-Balding partnership has now delivered Balding's first Dante and Juddmonte's first since the 1990s.
The favourites' races
Christmas Day (11/4F, Ryan Moore) -- the Coolmore favourite was forward-placed throughout under Moore but was outpaced when Item went past in the closing stages. The 3rd-place finish keeps the colt in the Derby picture but doesn't strengthen the Coolmore-Camelot Derby form line.
Morshdi (10/3, Tom Marquand) -- the Haggas joint-favourite was disappointing in 5th. Marquand held the colt up for too long and never got into the race in a meaningful way. After the Lingfield Derby Trial double-shot framing pre-race, this is the type of result that closes a Derby ante-post chapter.
The dark horses delivered the front 2
Item at 11/2 and Action at 4/1 filling the top 2 makes this a sub-favourite-pair result -- the kind of Dante outcome that pays significantly more than a Christmas-Day-or-Morshdi exacta. Forecasted SP exacta: Item-Action paid £80+ at most major firms.
The Coolmore reshuffle
Action's 2nd-place at 4/1 is the more important Coolmore form line than Christmas Day's 3rd. Action was the stablemate runner at the 5-day stage; O'Brien is now arguably better-placed with Action than Christmas Day for Epsom. Wayne Lordan rode an outstanding race -- tracking the early pace and rallying to take 2nd when Item went past.
Going and ground
The 2m 10.80s winning time on Good ground was a fair-but-not-fast Group 2 1m2½f effort, indicating the race ran true to form. No going-related excuses for any of the placed horses.

What the Dante means for the 2026 Epsom Derby (Saturday 6 June)
The Dante is the single most important Derby trial in Europe at the time it runs. Thursday's result reshapes the 2026 Derby ante-post market in a structural way.
Item -- 5/1 joint-favourite for the Derby
Item's 11/2 Dante win has compressed his Epsom Derby price to 5/1 with most major firms — drawing him level with Coolmore's Benvenuto Cellini at the top of the market. Specifically:
| Bookmaker | Item Epsom Derby (post-Dante) |
|---|---|
| Coral | 5/1 |
| Bet365 | 5/1 |
| William Hill | 5/1 |
| Star Sports | 5/1 |
| Betfred | 11/2 |
| Sky Bet | 9/2 |
The compression from a 10/1+ ante-post price to 5/1 reflects the Dante's reliable form-line value — and the verdict of a horse who came from the rear to dispatch a Coolmore favourite by 2¾L.
The 2026 Derby ladder reshuffled
The Coolmore-versus-the-field framing now reads as Item vs Benvenuto Cellini at the top, with a second tier including Christmas Day, Action, and the as-yet-unraced Coolmore reserve options:
| Position | Horse | Trainer | Best price | Source race |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1= | Item | A Balding | 5/1 | Dante winner (Thu 14 May) |
| 1= | Benvenuto Cellini | A O'Brien | 5/1 | Chester Vase winner |
| 3 | Christmas Day | A O'Brien | 8/1 | Dante 3rd |
| 4 | Action | A O'Brien | 14/1 | Dante 2nd |
| 5 | Maltese Cross | W Haggas | 14/1 | Lingfield Derby Trial winner |
| 6 | Pierre Bonnard | A O'Brien | 33/1 | Beaten in Derby trial twice |
| WC | James J Braddock | J O'Brien | 25/1 | Leopardstown Derby Trial winner |
The Item-vs-Benvenuto-Cellini joint-favouritism is the most evenly poised Derby market in years -- Benvenuto Cellini's Chester Vase 4¼L win and Item's 2¾L Dante win are the two strongest Derby-trial form lines of the spring.
What it means for Coolmore
Aidan O'Brien is now arguably stronger with Action (Dante 2nd) than Christmas Day (Dante 3rd) for the Derby. Wayne Lordan's ride was outstanding — pace tracking, rally for 2nd. Watch the Lordan ride at Epsom as a Coolmore yard signal in the weeks ahead.
Christmas Day's Derby price drifts from 7/2 pre-race to 8/1 post-race — the bookmakers correctly read 3rd-place as a class downgrade.
The Juddmonte-Balding angle
This is Andrew Balding's first Dante and his biggest Juddmonte success in many years. The Balding stable's strength at Epsom is now the editorial centrepiece — Park House Stables has the trends-cleanest Derby favourite of the spring. Expect the Juddmonte-Balding combination to be the major Coolmore-rival ante-post story through to 6 June.

Responsible note
Item is now a clear Epsom Derby favourite at 5/1. But the Derby is a different test -- a 1m4f trip at Epsom on a unique course with the Tattenham Corner gradient. Dante winners don't automatically win the Derby: 2 of the last 10 Dante winners completed the double (Golden Horn 2015, Desert Crown 2022); 5 of 10 won or placed. At 5/1 Item is the trends-aligned favourite but not a banker. Bet only money you can afford to lose, set limits, BeGambleAware.org.
