See the Derby live hubEpsom Derby Festival 2026 runs Friday 5 - Saturday 6 June โ two days, three Group 1s, and the world's most prestigious flat race.
The 247th running of the Derby. Last year's edition (2025) was the first under Betfred's five-Classic sponsorship deal and saw Coolmore sweep all three Group 1s โ Jan Brueghel (Coronation Cup), Minnie Hauk (Oaks) and Lambourn (Derby). The Derby itself was renamed in tribute to the late HH Aga Khan IV, and Betfred introduced 72-hour declarations โ a UK Group 1 first.
Three Group 1 races across two days:
- Coronation Cup (Fri 5 June, 14:45, G1, 1m4f6y, older horses) โ Jan Brueghel defending champion if returning sound; Coolmore typically run 1-2 horses on a Royal Ascot Prince of Wales's lead-in.
- Betfred Oaks (Fri 5 June, 16:00, G1, 1m4f6y, 3yo fillies) โ the Classic for fillies; Coolmore-favoured race (11 wins for Aidan O'Brien). After Sunday 3 May's 1000 Guineas, True Love is targeted at the Coronation Stakes (Royal Ascot mile route, not Oaks); the Coolmore Oaks pick will emerge from the Cheshire Oaks (6 May) winner Amelia Earhart and the Musidora (13 May) form line.
- Betfred Derby (Sat 6 June, 15:30, G1, 1m4f6y, 3yo colts) โ the world's premier flat Classic. Aidan O'Brien is 11 wins now and going for a fourth in succession (Auguste Rodin 2023, City Of Troy 2024, Lambourn 2025). The 2026 Coolmore lead is Benvenuto Cellini (Chester Vase route, 6 May) with Pierre Bonnard (Leopardstown Derby Trial) and Christmas Day (Dante, 14 May) as the supporting cast.
Why Coolmore dominate. O'Brien has now won 11 Derbies + 11 Oaks + 10 Coronation Cups. The Coolmore-trained Lambourn won the 2025 Derby at 13/2 SP after a 33/1 โ 16/1 โ 13/2 compression on race-day morning. Their stable jockey Wayne Lordan rode him; senior jockey Ryan Moore picked Delacroix (the favourite) and finished 9th. Stable-jockey-vs-second-string decisions are the strongest 2026 storyline to watch at the 5-day declarations stage on Friday 30 May.
This piece walks through Friday's Coronation Cup + Oaks card, Saturday's Derby day, the 2025 Coolmore-sweep context (what carried into 2026), and how to watch + bet the festival.

Friday 5 June โ Coronation Cup + Oaks day
Friday's seven-race card is built around two Group 1s in the same afternoon โ the Coronation Cup at 14:45 and the Oaks at 16:00. ITV Racing carries both live on ITV1.
Coronation Cup (G1, 14:45, 1m4f6y, older horses)
The 2025 race, won by Jan Brueghel (100/30 from 8/13F Calandagan), set up the 2026 picture. Jan Brueghel is the defending champion; Aidan O'Brien typically runs him in the Coronation Cup โ Prince of Wales's Stakes route (the same route St Nicholas Abbey took in 2011), so the 2026 Coronation Cup is Coolmore's preferred lead-in to Royal Ascot for their older middle-distance star.
The 2025 dossier on Jan Brueghel ([retrospective brief]):
- Was 2024 St Leger winner (beat Illinois a neck)
- Reframed by O'Brien as the stable's older-horse spearhead after Kyprios's retirement
- Won the Coronation Cup by 1/2 L from Calandagan despite a Curragh reappearance defeat
- Continuous (stablemate) was deployed as a tactical pacemaker
- Time 2m 36.13s on Good-to-Soft / Good-in-places
- O'Brien's 10th Coronation Cup, Ryan Moore's 5th
For 2026: if Jan Brueghel returns sound, he's the favourite. The chief threats:
- Calandagan (TBC, age 5 if running) โ Aga Khan Studs, the 2025 G1 Saint-Cloud winner who closed his last half-mile faster than Jan Brueghel but was beaten on the Epsom camber
- Lambourn (5) โ last year's Derby winner stepping up to older company, Coolmore second-string
- Whirl (4yo) or Minnie Hauk (4yo) if entered โ Coolmore have multiple options at this distance
- Trawlerman / Sweet William if Gosden run them here over the Royal Ascot Gold Cup route (unlikely โ both are pure stayers)
Trends: 8 of last 10 winners aged 5+; 9 of last 10 came from top 3 in betting; the Coronation Cup is one of the most market-faithful Group 1s of the meeting.
For the dedicated Coronation Cup preview see our Coronation Cup 2026 Preview.
Betfred Oaks (G1, 16:00, 1m4f6y, 3yo fillies)
The fillies' Classic. 1 mile 4 furlongs at Epsom is the most demanding test of the British Classic year โ the unique camber, the dip, the short straight. Aidan O'Brien has won the Oaks 11 times (most recently Minnie Hauk 2025); only Robert Robson's 13 stands ahead.
The 2025 race โ Minnie Hauk (9/2) beat Whirl (15/2) by a neck, with Desert Flower (11/10F) a beaten 4L 3rd. Ryan Moore's choice of Minnie Hauk over Whirl was the dominant pre-race narrative; that decision paid off. Minnie Hauk went on to win Irish Oaks + Yorkshire Oaks + finished 2nd in the Arc; Timeform Champion Filly/Mare 2025 on 127.
For 2026: the Oaks picture rebuilds after the Coolmore-Newmarket carve-up. True Love won the 1000 Guineas at 5/1 but is named for the Coronation Stakes (Royal Ascot, 19 June) at a mile, NOT the Oaks. The Coolmore Oaks lead is among:
- Amelia Earhart (3yo) โ Aidan O'Brien's lead Oaks fancy. Cheshire Oaks (6 May) is her named prep route. 8/1 Oaks ante-post.
- The Musidora winner (13 May) โ if I'm The One (Gosden) runs at York, she's the form-line carrier into Epsom; if she goes to Newbury Listed, the Musidora produces a different Coolmore-or-Walker line
- Pretty Polly graduate (3 May winner) โ Newmarket Listed form line into the Oaks
- Charlie Appleby's Godolphin filly โ TBC after the 1000G result reset the picture
Trends: 11 of last 13 winners came from top 2 in betting; Aidan O'Brien favourites 4-from-11 historically; the Cheshire Oaks โ Epsom Oaks form line produced 5 of last 9 Oaks winners.
For the dedicated Oaks preview see our Epsom Oaks 2026 Preview and the Cheshire Oaks 2026 preview for the prep race.
Friday's supporting card
The Coronation Cup is the 5th race; the Oaks is the 6th. Earlier on the card:
- Princess Elizabeth Stakes (G3, 1m, 4yo+ fillies) โ older fillies' miler, often a Lockinge-form-line tester
- Surrey Stakes (Listed, 7f, 3yo) โ the colts' supporting prep race, occasionally produces a Royal Ascot Jersey winner
- Diomed Stakes (G3, 1m, 4yo+) โ older miler Group 3, a Royal Ascot Queen Anne-style trial
- Woodcote Stakes (Class 2 Conditions, 6f, 2yos) โ historically the Royal Ascot Coventry Stakes prep; eight consecutive winners (2018-2025) had won their previous race
For our broader Friday day-by-day analysis see the Epsom Derby 2026 Friday Preview.
Saturday 6 June โ Derby Day
The Betfred Derby (G1, 15:30, 1m4f6y, 3yo colts) is the centrepiece of the British Flat-racing year โ and the world's premier 3yo Classic. Saturday's seven-race card is built around the 15:30 Derby, with ITV1 carrying the full afternoon live.
Betfred Derby (G1, 15:30) โ the world's premier flat Classic
The 2025 race โ Lambourn (13/2, A O'Brien / W Lordan) won unchallenged by 3 3/4 L from Lazy Griff (50/1 Charlie Johnston / Mickael Soumillon). Tennessee Stud (28/1) 3rd; New Ground (50/1) 4th; Stanhope Gardens (12/1) 5th. Delacroix (2/1F) finished 9th beaten 11 1/2 L; Pride Of Arras (4/1) was 17th of 18; The Lion In Winter (7/1) was tailed off in 14th.
The 2025 result was the lowest-rated Derby winner since Ruler Of The World 2013 per Timeform's Tony McFadden โ "plenty of his rivals failed to fire." The story was about the favourites flopping rather than Lambourn being exceptional.
Lambourn's pre-race compression was the strongest stable signal: 33/1 โ 16/1 (after Chester Vase 2nd) โ 13/2 SP on Saturday morning, after Coolmore's Friday Coronation Cup + Oaks double. O'Brien's record-extending 11th Derby, third in succession.
For 2026 โ the Coolmore Derby lead:
The 2026 Coolmore Derby ladder reads (per the Chester Vase 2026 preview + Dante Stakes 2026 preview):
- Benvenuto Cellini (Frankel) โ 5/1 Derby favourite, Chester Vase route on Wednesday 6 May. The named Coolmore lead.
- Pierre Bonnard (Frankel) โ 10/1 Derby (drifted from 4/1 after Ballysax flop), Leopardstown Derby Trial route 10 May. Coolmore second-string.
- Christmas Day (Camelot) โ 12/1 Derby, Dante Stakes route 14 May. Coolmore Dante runner.
- Hawk Mountain (Wootton Bassett) โ 8-10/1 Derby, Dante or France route. Coolmore 4th-string.
The crucial question for 2026: which of the four does Ryan Moore ride? In 2025 Moore picked Delacroix (the favourite) over Lambourn (the eventual winner) โ Coolmore's stable jockey decision proved wrong.
The non-Coolmore field will fill in after the Sandown bet365 Classic Trial 24 April (Raaheeb won โ see Dante Stakes 2026 preview) and the trial form lines through May:
- Raaheeb (Burrows) โ Dante route NOT Derby per Burrows; if he runs the Derby would be a stretch
- Al Zanati (Appleby) โ Sandown Classic Trial 2nd; the Appleby Derby second-string
- Maltese Cross (Haggas) โ earmarked for Lingfield Derby Trial 9 May or the Chester Vase
- Pride Of Arras (Beckett) โ defending field-runner from 2025 if entered
- Wathnan / Godolphin / Gosden runners โ TBC at the 5-day declarations stage
Trends to remember:
- Aidan O'Brien is 11/12 wins from 12 Derby attempts since 2007 โ the most-dominant trainer-race combination in modern flat racing
- Stall 10 is the historically luckiest berth (11 winners since 1967); stalls 7-14 source 9 of last 11 winners
- Stalls 2, 11, 16, 20 had NEVER produced a winner pre-2025
- Pace + camber-handling matter more than draw at the trip
- Galileo / Sea The Stars / Frankel pedigree dominates โ Australia (sire of Lambourn 2025) was a Derby winner himself, by Galileo
For our dedicated Derby tipping see the Epsom Derby 2026 Tips piece.
Saturday's supporting card
The Derby is the 6th race. The supporting card includes:
- Dahlbury Coronation Cup (G3, 1m, 4yo+) โ older miler Group 3 (NOT the Friday Coronation Cup which is G1 over 1m4f)
- Investec Derby Trial (Class 1 Listed, 1m4f, 3yo) โ non-Pattern but a Derby-also-rans landing spot
- Oaks Trial (Listed, 1m4f, 3yo fillies) โ the Saturday equivalent of Friday's Oaks Trial
- Diomed (already covered in Friday section โ actually Friday)
For our broader Saturday day-by-day analysis see the Epsom Derby 2026 Saturday Preview.
The 2025 Coolmore sweep โ context that carries into 2026
Last year's Epsom Derby Festival was the first time Coolmore swept all three Group 1s โ Coronation Cup (Jan Brueghel), Oaks (Minnie Hauk) and Derby (Lambourn). That clean sweep frames the 2026 picture in three ways:
1. Coolmore's Epsom dominance is structural, not seasonal
Aidan O'Brien's modern Epsom record:
| Race | All-time wins | 2023-2025 record |
|---|---|---|
| Coronation Cup | 10 | 1 win (Jan Brueghel 2025) |
| Oaks | 11 | 2 wins (Soul Sister 2023, Minnie Hauk 2025) |
| Derby | 11 | 3 wins in succession (Auguste Rodin 2023, City Of Troy 2024, Lambourn 2025) |
The 2024-2025 Coolmore Derby pattern is:
- 2024: City Of Troy (Justify) -- by Galileo's Australia (Galileo) line
- 2025: Lambourn (Australia) -- a Derby-winner-by-a-Derby-winner-by-a-Derby-winner per Magnier
For 2026: Aidan O'Brien is going for a fourth Derby in succession with Benvenuto Cellini (Frankel) as the named lead. Frankel has 2 previous Derby winners on his page (Adayar 2021, Westover 2022 placed); the Frankel-Galileo cross is a different pedigree path from City Of Troy / Lambourn but Coolmore's depth at the trip is unprecedented.
2. Stable jockey decisions mattered more than form
The 2025 Oaks turned on Ryan Moore picking Minnie Hauk (9/2) over Whirl (15/2 โ the much more impressive Musidora trial winner). Moore's decision proved right by a neck.
The 2025 Derby turned on Ryan Moore picking Delacroix (2/1F โ finished 9th) over Lambourn (13/2 โ won). Moore's decision proved wrong; Lordan's quote post-Lambourn-win: "For any jockey that starts out all they ever want to do is win a Derby."
For 2026 we're watching:
- Which Coolmore Derby horse does Moore pick? Benvenuto Cellini (5/1 Derby fav), Pierre Bonnard, Christmas Day, or Hawk Mountain. Moore's choice is the strongest stable signal of confidence at the 5-day declarations stage on Friday 30 May.
- Which Coolmore Oaks filly does Moore pick? Amelia Earhart (the Cheshire Oaks horse) is the published lead but the Musidora form line could redirect.
- Coolmore's senior-jockey-second-string-vs-first-string decisions are the festival's strongest stable tells.
3. The 2025 favourites' flop is a 2026 lay flag
The 2025 Derby's beaten favourites:
- Delacroix (2/1F) โ 9th, beaten 11 1/2 L. Hung badly, didn't handle the camber. Re-routed to win the Eclipse and Irish Champion (so the form is fine, the fit was wrong).
- Pride Of Arras (4/1) โ 17th of 18, hung badly left into Tattenham Corner. Gelded after, won the Voltigeur.
- The Lion In Winter (7/1) โ tailed off, 14th. The 11/4 โ 12/1 winter favourite collapse.
The 2025 lessons for 2026:
- Hold-up tactics historically underperform at Epsom โ Lambourn pressed the pace, the favourites tried to come from behind and got into trouble
- Stall position matters more than the betting market โ Lambourn drew the historically lucky stall 10
- First-time-ever-the-camber tests is the biggest risk for over-hyped favourites โ Pride Of Arras handled York fine in the Dante but couldn't handle the Epsom camber
4. The Aga Khan honour and the Aga Khan Studs angle
The 2025 Derby was titled "Betfred Derby (In Honour Of His Highness Aga Khan IV)" following the Aga Khan's death earlier in 2025. The Aga Khan Studs supplemented Midak for ยฃ75,000 -- an obvious sentimental angle.
For 2026: the Aga Khan honour title may persist in race-name marketing through 2026 (TBC). The Aga Khan Studs continue to run a strong middle-distance team -- Calandagan, Ezeliya (retired) -- and a 2026 Aga Khan Studs Derby contender is likely to emerge from the spring trials in France or Ireland.

Responsible note
The Derby Festival is one of the year's biggest betting events โ turnover on the Derby alone exceeds GBP 100m most years.
