Friday 5 June 2026 -- Coronation Cup + Oaks day at the Epsom Derby Festival. First race 1:55pm, last race 5:30pm. Seven-race card on ITV1 / ITVX from approximately 1:30pm.

The opening day of the Derby Festival is built around two Group 1s in the same afternoon:

  • Coronation Cup (G1, 14:45, 1m4f6y, 4yo+) -- older middle-distance championship; Jan Brueghel defending champion
  • Betfred Oaks (G1, 16:00, 1m4f6y, 3yo fillies) -- 3yo fillies' Classic

The 2026 storylines:

  • Jan Brueghel defending the Coronation Cup -- Aidan O'Brien's older-horse spearhead post-Kyprios. 5/4F ante-post.
  • Amelia Earhart the named Coolmore Oaks lead via Cheshire Oaks (Wed 6 May). 8/1 ante-post.
  • I'm The One the Gosden Oaks favourite at 7/2 if she runs the Musidora rather than the Newbury Listed
  • The Coolmore filly division depth -- after Whirl's Pretty Polly 2025 win, Minnie Hauk's 2025 Oaks win, the 2026 leads emerge from Cheshire / Musidora form lines

This piece covers the race-by-race breakdown of Friday's card, the betting angles, and where to bet.

Coronation Cup (G1, 14:45) -- older middle-distance championship

Jan Brueghel (5/4F, A O'Brien / R Moore) defending after his 2025 win at 100/30. Trends-cleanest pick of the field at 5/5. Lambourn (4/1) the value-pick second-string -- last year's Derby winner stepping up. Calandagan (4/1-9/2) the chief non-Coolmore threat.

For the dedicated Coronation Cup preview see Coronation Cup 2026 Preview.

Betfred Oaks (G1, 16:00) -- 3yo fillies' Classic

The fillies' Classic. 1 mile 4 furlongs at Epsom is the most demanding test of the British Classic year -- the unique camber, the dip, the short straight. Aidan O'Brien is 11 wins.

For 2026: the named Coolmore Oaks lead is Amelia Earhart (8/1) via the Cheshire Oaks (Wed 6 May). The Gosden alternative is I'm The One (7/2 ante-post) -- route TBC between Cheshire / Musidora / Newbury Listed.

For the dedicated Oaks preview see Epsom Oaks 2026 Preview.

Princess Elizabeth Stakes (G3, 3:05pm) -- older fillies' miler

Group 3 over 1 mile for older fillies and mares. Often a Lockinge form-line tester for fillies (the Lockinge is the senior mile championship at Newbury 16 May). Andrew Balding + John & Thady Gosden + William Haggas dominate.

Diomed Stakes (G3, 3:40pm) -- older miler

Group 3 over 1 mile for older horses. A Royal Ascot Queen Anne-style trial -- not a direct route but a meaningful spring older-miler form line.

Surrey Stakes (Listed, 1:55pm) -- 3yo colts' supporting prep

Listed conditions over 7 furlongs. Supporting card opener; occasionally produces a Royal Ascot Jersey winner.

Woodcote Stakes (Class 2 Conditions, 2:30pm) -- 2yo championship

6-furlong 2yo Conditions race. Historically the Royal Ascot Coventry Stakes prep. Eight consecutive winners (2018-2025) have won their previous race -- a strong stable-confidence-pattern trend.

Friday closer (Handicap, 5:35pm) -- value-pick

The Friday closer is a competitive 1m2f handicap -- often a value-pick to close the day.

Friday's betting angles

The Coronation Cup -- market-faithful

9/10 winners came from top 2 in betting; 8/10 aged 5+ -- the most market-faithful older-horse Group 1 of the spring. Bet the form, not the value. Jan Brueghel at 5/4 is the trends-cleanest favourite -- expect 6/4 to 11/8 race-day if he's confirmed running.

The Oaks -- Cheshire form-line is gold

5/9 of last 9 Cheshire Oaks winners W/P at Epsom -- the strongest single Oaks-trial line in modern racing. The named Coolmore Cheshire Oaks runner is Amelia Earhart -- if she wins or places at Chester (Wed 6 May), her Oaks ante-post 8/1 compresses to 5/4-6/4 by Friday 30 May.

The Gosden alternative I'm The One at 7/2 is the value pick if she runs Cheshire or Musidora. Avoid the Newbury Listed scenario -- if Gosden chooses the Listed (Sat 16 May), she's not going to Epsom.

The Princess Elizabeth -- Andrew Balding angle

Andrew Balding has won this race 3 times in 5 years with his older fillies. The Lockinge-Royal-Ascot-Coronation-Stakes pipeline runs through this race -- look for Balding fillies coming back from G2/G3 form.

The Woodcote Stakes -- 'won previous race' trend

Eight consecutive winners (2018-2025) have won their previous race. Filter the field by stable-confidence-flag horses (Charlie Appleby novice winners, Hannon novice winners, Eve Johnson Houghton novice winners). Maximized won the 2025 race at 6/5F as a TDN Rising Star Haydock novice graduate -- the template for 2026.
