Wednesday 6 May 2026, 3:05pm BST. Chester Roodee. Boodles Chester Vase, Group 3, 1m4f63y. Going: Good. Winning time: 2m 35.22s (fast by 0.38s).
Benvenuto Cellini (2/9F) wins the 2026 Chester Vase for Aidan O'Brien under Ryan Moore -- a power-packed 4 1/4-length victory over Coolmore stablemate Proposition (14/1), with Mr Colonel (Fahey, 40/1) third. The Frankel colt is now 9/4 ante-post Derby favourite with Betfred (cut from 5/1 pre-race), strengthening his position as Coolmore's lead Derby horse for Epsom on Saturday 6 June.
Result:
- 1st Benvenuto Cellini (2/9F) -- A P O'Brien / Ryan Moore
- 2nd Proposition (14/1) -- A P O'Brien / Wayne Lordan -- 4 1/4 L
- 3rd Mr Colonel (40/1) -- R&P Fahey / S Gray -- 1 3/4 L (6L overall)
- 4th Del Maro (11/2) -- C Appleby / W Buick -- 2 1/4 L (8 1/4 L overall)
- 5th Mr Vettori (22/1) -- J Harrington / S Foley -- 8 1/2 L (16 3/4 L overall)
[Royal Standard (Balding) and Water To Wine (Gosden) were non-runners.]
The race shape was a tactical Coolmore showcase. With Proposition setting an honest pace as Coolmore's stable pacemaker -- a deliberate tactical deployment Aidan O'Brien used identically with Continuous in the 2025 Coronation Cup -- Benvenuto Cellini was able to relax in midfield under Moore. He moved onto the leader's tail rounding the home turn and quickened cleanly through the final 4 furlongs, pulling clear in the closing stages.
Ryan Moore post-race [Sky Sports]:
"The race was a little disjointed with the horse taking back for second, but he quickened up well from the four (furlong) to the three before getting a little tired in the straight... He will come on for this and I'm very happy. I've sat on him a bit before [at home] and he's a quality colt."
Editorial centrepiece: the trends-scorecard format we applied to the pre-race Chester Vase preview had Benvenuto Cellini at 4 of 5 trends confirmed -- the trends-cleanest pick of the field. The 2/9F price didn't pay value, but the trends-aligned outcome was the format's strongest validation of the spring after the 2000 Guineas trifecta.
This piece walks through the full result + market trajectory + race shape, and Derby implications -- specifically the Coolmore-vs-the-rest picture for Epsom Saturday 6 June.

Race shape and how the winner won
This was a textbook Coolmore tactical Vase -- the same template Aidan O'Brien deployed with Lambourn in 2025 (won by 11/8) and Continuous as pacemaker in the 2025 Coronation Cup. Proposition (Wayne Lordan) was set up to set an honest gallop with no pretensions of winning; the 14/1 SP confirms the bookmakers read his role correctly.
Benvenuto Cellini's race:
- Settled mid-division under Ryan Moore through the early stages
- Tracked Proposition's pace from a perfect tactical position
- Moved onto the leader's tail rounding the home turn
- Quickened from the 4-furlong pole to the 3-furlong pole -- the decisive move per Moore's quote
- Eased to a 4 1/4 L winning margin in the closing stages
Moore's post-race honest framing: "He quickened up well from the four (furlong) to the three before getting a little tired in the straight." That's a meaningful editorial caveat -- the colt didn't dominate to the line in the way City Of Troy did at Epsom 2024. The 4 1/4 L margin is comfortable, but the bookmakers will note the slight late-race tiring.
Mr Colonel (40/1, Fahey) running on for third is the form-line that frees up Mr Vettori's connections from any expectation -- the 1 3/4 L margin behind Proposition reads as a respectable Group-3-class effort from a sub-Coolmore-class yard.
Charlie Appleby's Del Maro (4th, 11/2) had been Godolphin's hope; the 2 1/4 L behind Mr Colonel suggests his Sandown bet365 Classic Trial form line (2nd to Raaheeb) doesn't translate to championship Group-1 class.
Market and SP trajectory
| Time | Benvenuto Cellini | Proposition | Mr Colonel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Antepost (4 May) | 6/5 | 16/1 | (no Vase price) |
| Race-day morning (6 May) | 1/2 | 14/1 | 50/1 |
| SP | 2/9F | 14/1 | 40/1 |
Benvenuto Cellini compressed from 6/5 ante-post to 2/9 SP -- a steep odds-on shortener reflecting a combination of:
- Coolmore's pacemaking strategy (Proposition added) becoming visible
- Royal Standard scratching on Tuesday
- Water To Wine's morning-of withdrawal (no Gosden challenge)
Derby market response (Betfred):
- Pre-Vase: 5/1
- Post-Vase: 9/4 (clear favourite)
General industry market: 9/4 with most major firms (Bet365, William Hill, Coral, Paddy Power). Pierre Bonnard drifted to 12/1+ for Epsom following his Ballysax flop. Christmas Day (Coolmore Dante runner Thu 14 May) holds at 10/1.
Coolmore's Derby ladder is now firm:
- Benvenuto Cellini (Vase winner) -- 9/4 Derby
- Christmas Day (Dante 14 May) -- 10/1
- Hawk Mountain or Pierre Bonnard -- 12/1-14/1
Aidan O'Brien is now solid favourite for an unprecedented 4-in-a-row at Epsom (Auguste Rodin 2023, City Of Troy 2024, Lambourn 2025, Benvenuto Cellini 2026?). The Vase form line (4 1/4 L of Proposition) is honest but not exceptional -- the 2025 Lambourn-by-1L was tighter, and Lambourn went on to win the Derby at 13/2.
Implications for the Epsom Derby (Sat 6 June)
Coolmore's Derby ladder — now firmly Benvenuto Cellini-led
Aidan O'Brien is now in position for an unprecedented fourth Epsom Derby in succession:
| Year | Coolmore winner | SP | Trial form |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | Auguste Rodin | 9/2 | Ballysax winner |
| 2024 | City Of Troy | 11/8F | Dewhurst form-line tester (no traditional trial) |
| 2025 | Lambourn | 13/2 | Chester Vase winner (by 1L) |
| 2026 | Benvenuto Cellini? | 9/4 ante-post | Chester Vase winner (by 4 1/4 L) |
The 2026 trial form line is materially stronger than 2025's Lambourn template -- 4 1/4 L vs 1L -- but the 2/9F → 9/4 Derby ante-post compression is also more extreme. The bookmakers are now pricing Benvenuto Cellini as the most market-faithful Coolmore Derby pick since City Of Troy in 2024.
The Coolmore second-tier Derby pool:
- Christmas Day (Camelot) -- O'Brien's named Dante runner Thursday 14 May. Currently 10/1 Derby; if he wins the Dante well he becomes the second-string Coolmore Derby horse, supporting the case for Benvenuto Cellini as the lead
- Hawk Mountain (Wootton Bassett) -- 8-10/1 Derby; Dante or France route TBC
- Pierre Bonnard (Frankel) -- drifted to 12/1+ after Ballysax flop; Leopardstown Derby Trial Sunday 10 May is his last chance to re-prove form
- Italy + Constitution River -- ran the Dee Stakes (Thursday this week); their performance shapes the second-string picture
For our dedicated Dante Stakes preview see Dante Stakes 2026 preview.
The non-Coolmore Derby field
With Benvenuto Cellini at 9/4 and the Coolmore lock confirmed, the non-Coolmore field becomes a long-shot category:
- Raaheeb (Burrows / Ryan) -- Sandown bet365 Classic Trial winner; the Dante is his named target (Burrows said "the Dante might come a bit quick" -- decision pending). At 12/1 Derby he's the value pick if the Dante goes well
- Al Zanati (Appleby / Buick) -- Sandown 2nd, 16/1 Derby; the Lingfield Derby Trial Saturday 9 May is his last chance to make the Derby cut
- Maltese Cross (Haggas / Marquand) -- Newbury maiden winner; Lingfield Derby Trial 9 May is the route
- Wise Prince (Gosden) -- Sandown 3rd; long-shot Derby place
Editorial read: the non-Coolmore Derby trifecta at the bookmakers has Raaheeb at 12/1 + Maltese Cross at 20/1 + Al Zanati at 16/1+. None of them are within striking range of Benvenuto Cellini at the head of the market.
What the Vase form line tells us
The 4 1/4 L margin is a significant Vase-winning distance -- larger than:
- Lambourn 2025 (1L from Lazy Griff who finished 50/1 2nd at Epsom)
- Continuous 2023 (won by 1 3/4 L)
- Star Of India 2022 (won by 4L)
But Benvenuto Cellini's 4 1/4 L came from a tactical Coolmore deployment (Proposition pacemaking), so the form line should be read with the same caveat we apply to any Coolmore pacemaker-shaped Group race: the winner's ability is real, but the margin overstates the tactical advantage.
The Timeform / RPR rating to watch for Benvenuto Cellini -- the 4 1/4 L margin should produce an RPR around 116-118p, which is below recent Derby-winning Vase-winners (Lambourn 119, Continuous 124p). 9/4 Derby is short value at this stage -- the Lingfield Derby Trial, Dante and Leopardstown Derby Trial all need to disappoint before the 9/4 price firms further.
For our Epsom Derby 2026 tips piece we'll refresh the trends scorecard at the 5-day declarations stage on Saturday 30 May.
What's running today (Thursday 7 May)
- Boodles Raindance Dee Stakes (Listed, 3yo, 14:35 BST) -- 6 declared. The Coolmore second-string Derby route (Italy + Constitution River) runs here. Result will inform the supporting-cast Derby picture.

Responsible note
This piece is a transparent application of the trends-scorecard format to the Chester Vase result. The result was the trends-aligned outcome -- our pre-race trends scorecard had Benvenuto Cellini at 4/5 trends with the Coolmore + Frankel + Group-1-yard pattern as the strongest filter. As we've documented in our in-house AI horse racing model write-up, trends narrow the field but don't beat the bookies. The 2/9 winning price doesn't pay value over the long term -- but the Coolmore-Vase-Derby pattern is one of the few exceptions where trend-following can deliver structurally.
