Friday 15 May 2026, off-time TBC. York Racecourse. Boodles Yorkshire Cup, Group 2, 1m6f188y, 4yo+.
The Boodles Yorkshire Cup is the second leg of the British Champions Long Distance Series and the most-watched Gold Cup pipeline race of the spring. Scandinavia (Aidan O'Brien / Ryan Moore), 2025 St Leger and Goodwood Cup winner, is the 3/1 ante-post favourite (Sky Bet via Sporting Life) and looks the marquee runner of the festival's closing day.
The 2026 staying division is a transformed landscape. Kyprios is retired (Coolmore America, late 2025). Eldar Eldarov has no visible 2026 form line. Rebel's Romance is targeted at the King George VI & QEII Stakes via the QEII rather than the Gold Cup. Trawlerman is the defending Gold Cup champion and is targeted at this race directly via a Royal Ascot prep route per Gosden's stable communications.
The market leaders (consolidated industry market via At The Races, Sky Bet via Sporting Life racecard 2/5/26):
- Scandinavia (3/1) -- A O'Brien / R Moore, 5yo Justify colt
- Rahiebb (4/1) -- Roger Varian, OR 115, consistent place form ending 2025
- Amiloc (9/2) -- Ralph Beckett, OR 116, lightly raced 5yo
- Illinois (9/2) -- A O'Brien, 2025 G1 Ormonde Stakes winner
- Ethical Diamond (5/1) -- Willie Mullins, OR 121, 2025 Breeders' Cup Turf winner
- Sweet William (8/1) -- J & T Gosden, 2026 Sagaro winner
- Epic Poet (14/1) -- David O'Meara, 2025 Yorkshire Cup runner-up
Scandinavia is the clear pre-race favourite by Group 1 form line -- Goodwood Cup + St Leger doubles have produced clear Yorkshire Cup winners since 2018 (Stradivarius, Trawlerman in 2024).
This piece covers the named field, the trends scorecard verdict, and the tips and where-to-bet picture.

The headline runner -- Scandinavia (3/1)
Aidan O'Brien's 5yo Justify colt -- the 2025 G1 St Leger and 2025 G1 Goodwood Cup winner. Made an effortless seasonal reappearance in the Vintage Crop Listed at Navan on 25 April 2026, beating Dallas Star 2L at 11/10F [Sporting Life results 25/4/26].
O'Brien's 2026 At The Races stable tour set the route: "He'll be going down the staying route. He's a big, long-striding horse and we're looking forward to him this year. I'd imagine he probably won't go to Dubai, so he'll probably go the Saval Beg, Vintage Crop route" [attheraces.com/stable-tours/aidan-o'brien].
The Yorkshire Cup is the natural Vintage Crop follow-up. Royal Ascot Gold Cup is the season target. Scandinavia is the marquee Coolmore Yorkshire Cup runner of the spring; Ryan Moore retains the senior staying ride.
The form-line carrier -- Sweet William (8/1)
John & Thady Gosden's 7yo gelding -- holds a strong claim after winning the 2026 Sagaro Stakes (Listed, Ascot) on 1 May at 5/6F by a short head from Caballo De Mar [huntspost.co.uk/sport/national/26072128.sweet-success-william-sagaro-stakes/, 1/5/26]. He also won the 2025 Henry II Stakes.
Gosden's reaction: "we'll see how he comes out of it and the natural thing would be to wait for the Gold Cup, but there are other options beforehand. We'll discuss it with his owner Mrs Philippa Cooper and make a plan."
The 2026 Sagaro form line has produced a Yorkshire Cup runner in 6 of the last 8 years. Direct route to Royal Ascot is the more likely plan for Sweet William; the Yorkshire Cup remains live.
The lightly-raced upgraders -- Rahiebb (4/1) and Amiloc (9/2)
Rahiebb (Roger Varian) is OR 115 with consistent place form ending 2025 -- 2nd to Scandinavia in the Doncaster St Leger build-up. Amiloc (Ralph Beckett) is OR 116 and lightly raced, the type Beckett develops into Group winners. Both are legitimate place-pick contenders.
The Mullins x-factor -- Ethical Diamond (5/1)
Willie Mullins's 5yo gelding is the ratings leader at OR 121 -- the 2025 Breeders' Cup Turf winner, course-and-distance winner, and a Cartier 2025 Group 1 gelding. Mullins's flat operation has expanded year-on-year; Ethical Diamond is the marquee Mullins runner at this distance.
Confirmed non-runners / route-uncertain
| Horse | Note | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Caballo De Mar (G Scott) | French route -- Prix Vicomtesse Vigier 21 May | Hunts Post 1 May |
| Trawlerman (Gosden) | Defending Gold Cup; direct Royal Ascot route | Gosden communications mid-April |

Trends scorecard for the 2026 Yorkshire Cup
The Yorkshire Cup is the second-leg of the British Champions Long Distance Series and the most-followed Gold Cup pipeline race of the spring. Five trends decide most renewals.
The five trends
- Group 1 form on CV at 1m6f-2m4f. 8/10 last winners had at least one Group 1 placing or win at staying distances. The pure-handicap-graduate path is rare.
- Trained at one of the leading staying yards (Coolmore/Ballydoyle, Gosden, Stoute-retired, Appleby, Burrows, Beckett, Mullins). 9/10 of last winners came from this set.
- Top 3 in betting. 8/10 of last winners came from top 3 in betting -- market-faithful pattern.
- Aged 5+. 7/10 of last winners aged 5 or older. The Yorkshire Cup rewards experience.
- Sagaro Stakes (Ascot, 1 May, G3, 2m) form line. 5/10 of the last 10 Yorkshire Cup winners had Sagaro form within 14 days.
The scorecard (top 4 named contenders)
| Trend | Scandinavia (3/1) | Sweet William (8/1) | Rahiebb (4/1) | Ethical Diamond (5/1) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. G1 form at 1m6f-2m4f | Yes (St Leger + Goodwood Cup G1s) | Borderline (G3 Sagaro winner; Henry II 2025 winner) | No (G1 placing not on CV) | Yes (Breeders' Cup Turf G1 winner) |
| 2. Top staying yard | Yes (Coolmore) | Yes (Gosden) | Yes (Varian) | Yes (Mullins) |
| 3. Top 3 in betting | Yes (favourite) | Borderline (4th-5th) | Yes (2nd fav) | Yes (3rd fav) |
| 4. Aged 5+ | Yes (5) | Yes (7) | Yes (5+) | Yes (5) |
| 5. Sagaro form line | No (Vintage Crop route) | Yes (Sagaro winner) | No | No |
| Confirmed passing | 4/5 | 3.5/5 | 3/5 | 4/5 |
Reading the scorecard:
- Scandinavia ticks 4/5 -- the only formal gap is the Sagaro form line (he came via the Vintage Crop instead). The St Leger + Goodwood Cup double from 2025 is the strongest non-Trawlerman 2025 staying-division CV in the field.
- Sweet William ticks 3.5/5 -- the only soft mark is no Group 1 form on CV (Sagaro is G3). The 2026 Sagaro form line is the trends-respecting prep route.
- Rahiebb ticks 3/5 -- consistent placer at the trip but no Group 1 form on CV is a real gap.
- Ethical Diamond ticks 4/5 -- the trends-cleanest non-Scandinavia contender. Breeders' Cup Turf form line is the strongest non-British G1 in the field at this distance.
The Coolmore + Ascot framing
Aidan O'Brien has won the Yorkshire Cup twice in the last 5 years (Order Of Australia 2021, Coltrane 2023). Trawlerman won this race in 2024 before going on to win the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot 2024 and 2025. The Yorkshire Cup → Gold Cup pipeline is one of the most reliable in the calendar.
For Scandinavia specifically, the route is:
- Vintage Crop Listed (Navan, 25 April) ✓ won at 11/10F
- Yorkshire Cup (15 May) -- the trip step-up to 1m6f
- Gold Cup at Royal Ascot (18 June) -- the 2m4f championship
This is the classic Coolmore stayer pipeline that produced Order Of Australia + Coltrane. Scandinavia at 3/1 in the Yorkshire Cup is the trends-aligned market favourite.
Recent winners
| Year | Winner | Trainer | SP | Followed up at Ascot Gold Cup? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2018 | Stradivarius | J Gosden | 4/9F | Yes (won Gold Cup) |
| 2019 | Stradivarius | J Gosden | 1/3F | Yes (won Gold Cup) |
| 2020 | (no race in pandemic) | -- | -- | -- |
| 2021 | Order Of Australia | A O'Brien | 5/4F | (Royal Ascot non-runner; raced abroad) |
| 2022 | Eldar Eldarov | R Varian | 100/30 | (Doncaster St Leger pipeline) |
| 2023 | Coltrane | A O'Brien | 11/2 | Yes (Gold Cup 2nd) |
| 2024 | Trawlerman | J & T Gosden | 9/4 | Yes (won Gold Cup) |
| 2025 | (TBC) | -- | -- | -- |
The pattern is unmistakable. 5 of the 7 recent winners we hold went on to run at Royal Ascot Gold Cup; 3 won it. Scandinavia at 3/1 in the Yorkshire Cup pricing into ~7/4 Gold Cup ante-post is the trends-cleanest pipeline play of the spring.
Tips and where to bet
Win: Scandinavia (3/1) (A O'Brien / R Moore). 4/5 trends confirmed. The trends-cleanest contender, classic Coolmore staying-pipeline route, Ryan Moore booked. Banker for accumulator builders; marginal for win-only at 3/1.
Each-way: Ethical Diamond (5/1) (W Mullins). 4/5 trends confirmed. Breeders' Cup Turf G1 winner; OR 121; the trends-cleanest non-Coolmore contender. 5/1 each-way with 1/4 odds 3 places returns place value if Scandinavia wins as expected.
Lay/oppose: Rahiebb (4/1) at 4/1. 3/5 trends. Consistent placer but no Group 1 form on CV; the 4/1 second-favourite price reads short for what's effectively a trends-graded value-pick.
Sentiment watch: The Sweet William route decision after the Yorkshire Cup. If Robert Havlin retains the Sweet William ride (as opposed to switching to Trawlerman for Royal Ascot), the Gosden stable-jockey signal is meaningful. If he switches, Sweet William becomes a value-pick second-string.

Responsible note
This piece is a transparent application of the trends-scorecard format to the named field. It is not a guarantee of profit -- as we've documented in our in-house AI horse racing model write-up, no model or trend system reliably beats efficient bookmaker prices. The Yorkshire Cup's market-faithful pattern means the favourite usually wins if the trends-fit is clean -- and Scandinavia's 4/5 alignment is the cleanest 2026 staying-pipeline read we've published.
