Eligibility note. The Irish 2000 Guineas is a 3yo colts and geldings G1. The 2025 winner Field Of Gold (J & T Gosden) is 4yo in 2026 and ineligible; his 2026 plan is the older-miler G1 route (Lockinge target before being withdrawn; older-horse route TBC). Likewise the 2025 runner-up Cosmic Year (O'Brien) is 4yo and ineligible. Henri Matisse, the 2025 French 2000 Guineas winner, has retired to Coolmore stud for 2026.

Gstaad (A O'Brien / R Moore, 2/5F)

Aidan O'Brien's chief Coolmore runner — the Newmarket 2000 Guineas runner-up after losing out to Bow Echo by 2¾L on 2 May. 7 starts, 3 wins + 4 seconds, never out of the top 2. Re-routed from the Royal Ascot St James's Palace track to the Curragh after O'Brien decided the Newmarket form-line transferred better to the Irish Classic than to the SJP.

Why he wins: the Newmarket form line is the deepest in the race; 5 of the last 6 Irish 2000G winners came out of the Newmarket Guineas top 3; Aidan O'Brien is bidding for a record-extending 13th Irish 2000G win (first was Desert King 1997, most recent Paddington 2023). Ryan Moore booked. Why he loses: the 2/5 price leaves no value; Gstaad has yet to win at Group 1 level (career bests are Group 2 wins + the Newmarket Guineas 2nd).

Distant Storm (C Appleby / W Buick, 5/1-7/1)

Charlie Appleby's headline non-Coolmore challenger — 3rd at Newmarket behind Bow Echo and Gstaad, beaten less than 2L. 2025 Dewhurst Stakes 3rd + Tattersalls Stakes winner marks him as the most-tested G1-class 3yo on offer outside Coolmore.

Why he wins: Newmarket form-line carrier, Appleby retained, Buick retained, the rematch angle against Gstaad on a 21-day turnaround. Why he loses: the 2L margin at Newmarket sets the form-line; Gstaad's superior late kick on the day suggests the same outcome at the Curragh.

Pacific Avenue (C Appleby, 8/1-10/1)

Godolphin's second-string at the Curragh — provides Appleby with a two-handed pace setup. Adds tactical depth if Coolmore doesn't run a pacemaker.

Hawk Mountain (A O'Brien, 10/1-12/1)

Coolmore's second-string — the 2025 Wootton Bassett 3yo who was 4th of 5 in the 16 April Craven Stakes behind Gosden's Oxagon. O'Brien: "Hawk Mountain will be trained for Epsom or France. If some of the other horses go to Epsom he'd be a possible to go to France as he'd be very comfortable at a mile and a quarter." The Curragh is the back-up if connections decide against the French Derby.

Aidan O'Brien runs the dominant 2/5 favourite (Gstaad) plus Hawk Mountain. Charlie Appleby has two (Distant Storm + Pacific Avenue). The shape: O'Brien's senior horse vs Appleby's two-pronged challenge.

What could derail Gstaad

1. Short-priced favourites flop pattern of 2026 — Time For Sandals 4/1F (Minster 8th), Amiloc 8/13F (Yorkshire Cup 6th), Rosallion 6/4F (Lockinge out of top 5). 2/5 favourites are not safe at G1 level in the current 3yo / older-horse picture.
