Kalpana held on by the barest of margins, a short head, from the 25/1 outsider Sparan Nua, with defending champion Minnie Hauk unable to land a blow in third. It was as close a finish as this race has produced in years, and not the exhibition round the market suggested at the off.
Kalpana went off the 10/11 favourite under Colin Keane for Andrew Balding, arriving on the back of victory in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes over Calandagan. She had every chance to win comfortably. She didn't get one: Sparan Nua, sent off at 25/1 for Jim Bolger, was still finding more in the final strides and got within a tenth of a length of turning the form on its head.
Minnie Hauk, seeking back-to-back Yorkshire Oaks wins for Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore, was held up in rear and never landed a serious blow, beaten two and a half lengths in third.

The result
1st Kalpana (10/11F), A M Balding / Colin Keane. Held up towards the rear of mid-division, made steady headway from over three furlongs out, went second with two to run, chased the leader, was ridden to lead a furlong out, then drifted right inside the final furlong and had to find more again to hold on.
2nd Sparan Nua (25/1), J S Bolger / Rossa Ryan, beaten a short head. Short of room when first asked for an effort over three furlongs out, made good headway with a furlong to run, went second inside the final furlong and pressed the winner all the way to the line. Just failed.
3rd Minnie Hauk (4/1), A P O'Brien / Ryan Moore, beaten 2½L. Held up in rear, outpaced over three furlongs out, made headway with two to run and went third a furlong out, but had no more than that once there. Not the pace of the first two.
4th Earth Shot (20/1), W J Haggas / James Doyle, beaten 3½L.
5th Tattycoram (25/1), R M Beckett / Edward Greatrex. Tracked the leaders early but was never able to land a blow.
6th Johanna Walsh (5/1), J P O'Brien / Dylan Browne McMonagle. Prominent for much of the way, weakened inside the final furlong.
7th Sugar Island (100/1), A P O'Brien / Ronan Whelan. Led and went clear early, still well clear with four furlongs to run, then was reeled in and faded.
8th Inis Mor (20/1), D Menuisier / Oisin Murphy.
9th Legacy Link (12/1), J & T Gosden / William Buick, well beaten, tailed off.

Kalpana arrived on the back of a King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes win over Calandagan, and the 10/11 starting price reflected a filly expected to confirm that form rather than have to fight for it. She had to fight for it. A short-head margin from a 25/1 outsider is as narrow as a Group 1 gets, and it leaves a real question over whether Thursday's run was a true form line or a career-best from Sparan Nua that will be hard to repeat.
For Minnie Hauk, this breaks a run that included last year's Yorkshire Oaks. Held up and outpaced early, she was doing her best work too late to trouble the front two, and a below-form effort from a proven Group 1 filly is worth watching rather than dismissing: whether it's a tactical read, the ground, or simply a season catching up with her is not something Thursday's result on its own can answer.
The value of a race like this, for a site built on watching prices against outcomes, isn't the 10/11 favourite winning. It's how close it came to not happening. A short head is the sort of margin that separates "the market got it right" from "the market got lucky," and on Thursday's evidence it's honestly hard to say which this was.
