What the trends tell you
Read these as history, not a system. The Derby is a three-year-old classic, so every winner is the same age - the test is which colt or filly has the class and the stamina for Epsom's unique mile and a half. Aidan O'Brien dominates the modern trainer record with twelve, and Lester Piggott's nine rides to victory are the benchmark in the saddle. Well-fancied horses win it more often than not, because the best middle-distance three-year-old usually goes off short. None of this is advice.
